Out of Body Experiences: How to Have Them and What to Expect Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 165 ratings

Broaden your horizons by learning astral projection and experiencing its profoundly positive impact on your thoughts about life, death, and spirituality.

Throughout history, people have reported spiritual experiences that we now identify as out-of-body experiences or OBEs. In recent times, modern researchers like Robert Monroe have pioneered the scientific study and practice of OBEs. Increasingly, people are remembering spontaneous OBEs, especially from early childhood. Also, OBEs are a typical feature of near-death experiences and have been described as beautiful, painless, and ecstatic.

This is the comprehensive manual for inducing out of body experiences and managing the experience. Peterson not only explores the stages of his own development, but also concludes each chapter with a specific exercise that takes you to the next level.

From wiggling out of your body for the first time (the author did a back flip his first time) to traveling through other realms and dealing with your “encounters,” this is one of the most practical, step-by-step guides to OBEs available. He clearly demonstrates how this consciousness-expanding experience is accessible to anyone willing to make the leap into the great beyond.

This is the ultimate manual on how to leave home alone . . .

Amazon.com Review

Out of Body Experiences could be summed up in Robert Peterson's own words: it's "what the books didn't tell me." Many people have tried to have out of body experiences (OBEs) and are discouraged when things don't go exactly as the books suggest they should. Peterson assures readers that anyone can have an OBE, and relates the difficulties and discoveries in his personal quest for them. His anecdotal, reassuring approach makes the whole experience seem much more accessible than do other books on the subject, which tend to read like textbooks. Peterson also addresses odd and potentially startling aspects of the OBE that the more technical books neglect to mention. Out of Body Experiences is a casual, friendly approach to astral travel that should be the first book anyone attempting an OBE reads, and should be high on the reading list of anyone who has tried unsuccessfully to leave his body. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Robert (Bob) Peterson was born on April 14, 1961. He has been studying and inducing out-of-body experiences and psychic experiences since he graduated from high school in 1979. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology, with a B.S. degree in computer science in 1984. While attending the University, he became more proficient at out-of-body exploration, while keeping detailed journals of his experiences. At the same time, he did volunteer work for a student-based organization called the Minnesota Society for Parapsychological Research (MSPR), which gave him experience as a “Ghost Buster” before the movie made the subject popular.

Since college, he has had a very successful career in systems level computer programming. He lived in Phoenix, Arizona in 1985 and 1986, where he started editing and occasionally contributing articles for a local spiritually themed newsletter called The Spontaneous Self. In 1987, he moved to Rochester, Minnesota and worked as a contract programmer at the IBM plant until 1996. During that time, he compiled his experiences and journals into his first book, Out of Body Experiences: How to have them and what to expect (Hampton Roads Publishing, 1997) which has been available online for free since 1996. His second book, Lessons Out of the Body, was published in 2001. His third book is a novel titled The Gospel According to Mike.

Today, Bob works for Linux software leader Red Hat. He lives near Brainerd, Minnesota with his wife and soulmate, Kathy. They have no children. His hobbies include writing, traveling, biking, woodworking, stained glass, fishing, kayaking, and strategy games. His web site is:

For more than 7 decades I have been a voracious reader always searching for more mysteries of the universe to explore. My journey has taken me from A to Z and from the scientific to the esoteric. Even though I have read numerous books in the past on astral projection and astral travel over the years; however, I am always seeking unique and interesting approaches to this subject. This is why when I saw this 270-page soft cover volume (Out of body experience: How to have them and what to expect by Robert Peterson) while browsing on Amazon, I decided to purchase it.

I am pleased to report that I found this book to be fascinating and very informative. This excellent book covers material you will not find in other books on this topic. Not only that, but it also includes various practical exercises to help you succeed in experiencing astral projection and travel. Even though I have experienced out of body experiences numerous times over the years; nevertheless, I discovered it takes practice to actually succeed.

If your truly desire to achieve out of body success and are willing to put in the practice of the 26 practical exercises explained in this book, this excellent manual will help you succeed.

This superb book is organized into two parts: (from skeptic to believer and what the books didn’t tell me) with 27 informative chapters. Some of the material includes the following: “Background, my childhood, first contact, beliefs blown to bits, overcoming fear, flight school, a helping hand, fight for sight, the mind during OBEs, the fantasy trap, out-of-body reality, how to have an OBE,” and many other educational chapters.

I thoroughly enjoyed not just reading this book but also practicing the many exercises presented.

Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Chair/Seated Tai Chi/Qigong/Yoga stretching for seniors and the physically challenged).

Well written book with lots of good exercises to practice, and very interesting stories of the authors experiences. I have not been fully out yet but have experienced the sensations one may feel before you get out. Takes practice but well worth it for me. Thanks Robert

I am a computer geek as Robert Peterson is and most of these things that he has witten in this book is almost exact same as my experiences are. I wonder is ther some link between logical thinking and OBE, as for doing computer stuff requires alot of imagenation, then it must use certain point in the brain.

As for the review for this book, it is very good both for staters and those who have been experiencing OBE for some time. I would recommend anyone who is interested to enhance ones life to buy this book and do some of these exercises. There are some things that I would change, such as removing the "I" character or changin it to something else, it is used too much, also change the "live" to "life" because it does not fit in the centence.

I would like more books from Rober Peterson about more in depth experiences such as Rober Monroe books. i.e talking to some of the spirit guides, the view and experience in different astral places etc. Hopefully my wish will one day come true!

Peace and love!

If I hadn’t read Robert Monroe’s book first (which were excellent) I probably would have rated this higher. This was a diary of sorts of a guy exploring OBE’s. Most of the book was describing his problems with getting in or out of his body. Most of the experiences he talks about were in his bedroom. He does give solutions to many of the problems he figured out. Also gives exercises to achieve OBE. I really was reading this to do arm chair traveling so to speak of another person’s adventures with astral travel cause I have no desire to do this myself. He doesn’t recount many interesting or exciting travels at all. Still an interesting book if you are actually trying to learn.

This is the book that really started me down the path that my life currently appears to be taking - I owe the author a debt of gratitude.
Peterson explains his experiences with OOB states (and other interesting effects on his life) in a very straightforward manner. No jargon to wade through, no assumptions to be swallowed (other than "gee it'd be cool to wander around outside my body"), and no apparent agenda other than a clear desire to let people know what he's figured out about the subject.
Some books tend to leap into esoteric explanations of (as an arbitrary example) "the seven spheres of astral existence" or the like, without much of a solid attempt to back up their assertions. A "believe me, because I know lots" attitude. Peterson's book instead carefully walks you through his own experiences, allowing the reader to see how he figured out some things, and how others still don't make sense. In other words, it sounds just like how you'd expect an honest guy trying to report some totally weird experiences would sound.
Everything he writes about in the book comes from his reported personal experience. When dealing with a subject as unconventional as OOBs, it really helps to be shown a clear picture of the exact process the author went through, from first experience, through explorations, side effects, up to the point where it's become enough a part of the author's life to begin sharing what he knows. And basically that's what we get here, along with quite a lot of specific techniques for skewing the scales in favor of getting some results of your own.
Highly recommended!

I was itching to know some of his wild AP experiences but unfortunately he haven't put them and focused mainly on science and lessons he learned while exploring OBE. I love guy! He's science minded, who is keen on learning and experimenting. I read few books on AP by other authors but they seemed be special cases. Forget OBE, I have been practicing some of the exercises which improved the quality of my life! Highly recommended..
