Beyond Everywhere: How Wi-Fi Became the World’s Most Beloved Technology Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

The fascinating international story of the people who created Wi-Fi, their early battles against skeptical opponents, and how it ultimately exploded across the globe to become synonymous with the internet itself—as told by one of Wi-Fi’s central figures.

Eighteen billion Wi-Fi devices are in use around the world, with four billion more added every year. Connecting everyone to everything, it is central to our lives today. How did this happen?
Beyond Everywhere is the surprising story in its entirety: the techno/political conflicts at its birth, the battles against competing technologies as it was being nurtured, and the international diplomatic intrigue as it spread across the planet. This vivid narrative about the people who gave Wi-Fi to the world is told with humor, insight, and charm by one of Wi-Fi’s key developers.

“An accessible account of how Wi-Fi tech became a crucial part of our work, society, and lives.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Whether you are a fan of technology or simply a fan of great storytelling, you will be captivated by
Beyond Everywhere, the heretofore untold story of how the fundamental Wi-Fi connectivity we all rely on came to be. Because of his unique and longstanding position at the very center of the Wi-Fi world, there is no one better than Greg Ennis to tell this dramatic tale. Now synonymous with the internet itself—and with billions of users—the Wi-Fi story has finally been told.”

—Edgar Figueroa, President and CEO, Wi-Fi Alliance

About the Author

For twenty-five years, until his retirement as Vice President of Technology for the Wi-Fi Alliance, Greg Ennis was at the very center of the Wi-Fi industry. In 1993, Ennis and two co-authors developed the technical proposal that was voted in by the IEEE 802.11 committee as the foundation for the Wi-Fi standard, beating out nine competing proposals from IBM and others. He then served as Chief Technical Editor for that Wi-Fi standard and was awarded by IEEE a “Certificate of Appreciation—in grateful acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions.” In 1999, Ennis and a handful of colleagues founded the Wi-Fi Alliance (“the international network of companies that bring you Wi-Fi”) and from the very beginning, he held that organization’s lead technical position until retiring in 2016. Ennis has been inducted into the Wi-Fi Alliance Hall of Fame. He currently lives with his wife in the beautiful Sierra foothills, just below Yosemite. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

I was attracted by the title, “Beyond Everywhere”, but was not sure with the main focus being on technology that I would be interested in reading it. Upon receiving the book, I thumbed through it quickly and decided to read all of it. For me the most engaging part of the story was the cooperation of the diverse international companies and personalities to pull together and trust each other enough to allow Wi-Fi to be the key to establishing the international world-wide communication pathway that is today. There is a definite story to be told and it is well written with humor and many interesting characters. I learned more about the actual technology than I imagined along with some tech-speak terms. Great book!

This is a quick read of the evolution of WiFi which started with Ethernet. Greg has a casual way of writing, describing technical advancements that can be understood by anyone. I met Greg in the '80's when I worked at LAN Media, a start-up founded by 3COM engineers Ron Crane and David Boggs. It was cool to see Greg recognize guys I worked with in the past, and companies I worked with key to communications in commercial and military markets.

I recommend this book to all my friends in the embedded computer industry, I think it'll take you back to the good-ole-days and see how the technologies evolved into today's high speed WiFi.

"Page turner" and standards development do not often occur in the same sentence, but Greg accomplishes this via the TRUE story of how Wi-Fi came to be. (I was in the room for some of it.) Many of my engineering colleagues liken developing standards to watching grass grow, but what needs to be appreciated is the interesting mix of technology, competitive interests and politics, not to mention the incredible cast of characters this process brings together. If you are involved in standards development in any capacity, this is a must-read. If you are simply curious about how an IEEE802 standard became "Wi-Fi", and ultimately ubiquitous, this is a very enjoyable reading journey. Highly recommended!

Greg’s history of Wi-Fi is a very easy read. While there is a bit of technology involved, this book is much more of an autobiography of a primary mover in the Wi-Fi industry and a bit of a political thriller. If you are a technologist, you will enjoy the descriptions of “making the sausage” that are typically the realm of product managers and marketers. If you are a user of Wi-Fi, you will be surprised at how tough it was to make this ubiquitous feature of nearly everything come into being. If you are just curious, read it for the background it will give you on this amazing technology.

Greg does an amazing job of sharing a technical journey through history while engaging the reader supremely well. As a Wi-Fi enthusiast and very involved member of the wireless engineering community, I was aware of much of the history of Wi-Fi from the outside. My journey into the depths of Wi-Fi did not really begin until 2003. I've written quite a few books on the technical functionality of Wi-Fi networks based on 802.11 and I've studied the history as best one can from the outside (reading the 802.11 standards from the first version through the amendments to the current status, and studying other related literature); however, this inside view was enlightening. You will learn about the behind-the-scenes struggles and conflicts that ultimately lead to a standard for any technology. You will discover the politics, the personal engagements, and the lobbying that must occur. Along the way, you'll understand some of the technology in a different way (if you're a Wi-Fi professional) or maybe for the first time (if you're a business professional interested in technology). Greg explains everything so that anyone can follow along and gain valuable insights.

Those who read this book will gain a valuable understanding of how change happens in the technology sector and how to negotiate your way through the hurdles that may arise. Without question, one of the best books I've read in the past decade. I cannot recommend this book enough to those working on the technology side or those seeking to effectively do business in the technology sector.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did Wi-Fi come to be? The ultimate history tour
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 2, 2023
Excellent read, really insightful, thorough and entertaining. A must read for any Wi-Fi professional, providing an excellent insight to the development of the now ubiquitous technology. Also, just the other day I was asked (for the 100th time) “What does Wi-Fi mean, where did the name come from?” and I was able to say “Read this book, it will provide the answer” as it does, so very thoroughly.
