Editorial Reviews

Review

"It's not easy to weave family drama and romance into a high-tension thriller about human trafficking, but Amy Rivers does it well in Ripple Effect, the third novel in the A Legacy of Silence trilogy. Highly recommended." - Pat Stoltey, author of In Defense of Delia

"A gem of a novel with deep connections, all the twists and turns you want, and many you don't expect. As a woman I identify with so many emotions and situations in this novel. I'd want Kate and Tilly in my corner."
- Award-winning author, Sonja Dewing

"The importance of this story cannot and should not be overlooked. Amy Rivers has tackled a difficult topic with kindness and compassion. The reality of the main issue is hideous and criminal yet Ms Rivers compels the reader to stay the course. It is through stories such as Ripple Effect humanity is awakened and there can be an end to abuse. I highly recommend this book. I also deliberately left the theme out of the review, so as to allow the reader to follow and learn the truth too often hidden."
- Mary Marraccini, Indiereader

In
Ripple Effect, Amy Rivers delivers a satisfying conclusion to her Legacy of Silence series by pitting the Medina sisters against the leaders of a local human trafficking ring. A compelling psychological thriller! ~Margaret Mizushima, author of the award winning Timber Creek K-9 Mysteries, including Standing Dead

Amy River’s, “Ripple Effect”, is about the repugnant crime of human trafficking.

“The U S State Department (USSD) estimates there are 14.0 million human trafficking victims worldwide.”

‘The International Labor Organization (ILO) says forced labor generates $150 billion in illegal profits each year “.

These two facts are citations from the Catholic Relief Service (CRS). Facts can be troublesome, and they tend to be impersonal.

“Ripple Effect” is a novel about two sisters, both health care professionals. Tilly, is an RN with special certification as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, and Kate is a practicing Clinical Psychologist. Their lives are deeply troubled by a ring of human traffickers that operates in their community.

In the first third of the book, the reader is acquainted with the two women, their friends, acquaintances, family and the deep love that they have for each other. The tempo and key then change because Tilly and a teenage girl are kidnapped by the local human trafficking ring. Deep personal psychological trauma results for both Kate and Tilly as well as brutal physical trauma to the two kidnapped women. As the story unfolds, there is some resolution to the psychic trauma and some healing of the physical trauma.

The structure of this novel is unusual as the 43 chapters alternate and are titled either Kate or Tilly. It is well written and, despite the subject, easy to read. The pace moves forward using two techniques; the chapters are short, and the last paragraph or even the last sentence is generally a subtitle annotation that made this reader want to go on to the next chapter.

The subject of “Ripple Effect” is repugnant, the need for the public to be knowledgeable about this crime is important and the demand for action is imperative.

Well done Amy Rivers

The author did a great job of recapping events from the past two books and how it affected Tilly and Kate’s decision making in this one. I really liked the writing style with the alternating POV. It was face paced with well developed characters. I could feel the emotions especially from Tilly in her situation. It was detailed enough to know what was happening to the girls without every second of the event as it happened. I loved Tilly’s relationship with Hannah and her dad. There were some heartwarming moments in between the suspense and horrific events these women went through. I am not sure if there will be another one after this, but I liked the way it ended.

This is a hard hitting thriller that tackles the real life world of human trafficking. As you can imagine with a book that has this subject matter there are trigger warnings.

The book is told in the points of view of two sisters, Kate and Tilly. Tilly is a SANE (a nurse that specializes in helping assault victims). Kate is a psychologist. Both have been victims and are now victim advocates. The fact that public figures are involved in a trafficking ring the sisters are trying to bring down puts both sisters and the ones they love in danger.

This book brings to life the emotions of victims of violent crimes with the edginess of a powerful thriller.

This book is part of a series. I haven’t read the two preceding books, but I was able to launch into this one with no confusion.

I received a copy of this book as a gift. All opinions are my own.

This is the third and final installment of A Legacy of Silence. I had not read the first two books in the series, but each book can be read as a standalone. The author did a great job at recapping when necessary to make sure the readers were up to date on the previous books. The book was overall fast paced and had multiple POVs. The book is a psychological suspense, but also a crime thriller with a ton of emotion. It was exciting to see a book with strong female characters and one that picked up a lot of social issues.

Please consider the trigger warnings as this book deals with human trafficking, abuse towards women and trauma.

I jumped in with the finale of the 𝘼 𝙇𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙘𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙞𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 series, and I found this to be a hard-hitting, suspenseful read.

Two sisters are entrenched in human trafficking. Not only is Kate, a psychologist, trying to break up the trafficking ring in their hometown, but it has clawed at both her and her sister Tilly personally.

The traffickers are trying to send a message to Kate and law enforcement when they abduct Tilly. These people are vile and violent. As Kate and her FBI boyfriend scramble to find Tilly and the young girl taken with her, Kate decides to try to tap a friend she knows may be part of the trafficking ring itself.

The author does a good job of filling us in on Kate and Tilly’s background, the abuse they suffered, the lasting effects of this trauma, and the relationships they have. Speaking of relationships, it is here that the book offers more moving moments, as Tilly is trying to protect a young teen whose father is in love with Tilly.

Human trafficking is the main theme, and I must give a gentle warning that violence and rape are mentioned several times. It is a dark, yet eye-opening look into this very scary world - who can be involved and how dangerous it truly is. But this is an important and very relevant topic that needs not to be swept under the table.
