Person of Interest Kindle Edition
Real estate is a competitive business and Kirstin likes to work the angles—so she keeps an eye on the obituaries and has a mortician notify her when a property’s about to go on the market. The latest tip could lead to a big payoff: a famed child psychologist has died, and the stunning Millford estate on an idyllic island off Cornwall, is about to become available.
Kirstin makes sure to mingle among the bereaved and pass along her business card. However, when she witnesses an apparent blackmail attempt and a near-fatal accident, Kirstin decides it’s time to leave. But with the local roads closed, she can’t get away.
As the body count rises, Kirstin finds she is a suspect—as well as a potential victim. And if the killer isn’t caught soon, someone might be writing Kirstin’s obituary . . .

About the author

Shirley writes psychological thrillers, as well as YA and MG novels. All her work has a wry comic undertone. She has written and produced plays for Radio 4 and the theatre. Shirley also writes for film. She teaches grads & undergrads screenwriting & theatre at FSU and Eckerd in London, as well as working as a consultant for The Literary Consultancy.
She’d like to think that even in the darkest corners of the darkest moments of her darkest books, there is always a dry sense of humour that can carry the reader through.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023As a real state agent, Kirsten attends funerals to get leads on possible sales of upscale properties. But attending Carolyn Millford’s, she gets more than she bargained for! Her car breaks down on her way back to the ferry, and as she’s walking she gets hit by a man driving a car who doesn’t see her. It turns out, the man is Luke Millford, and he brings her back to the mansion to get her looked at. A storm strands the ferry and she’s there for awhile and gets to know this complicated family whom it seems someone is trying to pick off one by one! And there’s an unexpected surprise at the end. A fascinating book which will definitely keep your interest! I received a free copy of this book and write this review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2023Looking to get rich as quickly as possible, Kirstin skirts the ethical divide by gate-crashing funerals to be the first in line for the subsequent house sale. With a tragic and dysfunctional childhood behind her, and her beloved older brother in jail, she keeps people at a distance and lives, pretty successfully, on her wits. But her latest target will challenge these ways of living more than ever before.
Tipped off about the unexpected passing of the matriach of the Milford family, with an imposing estate on an island off the coast of Cornwall, Kirstin soon finds herself too closely caught up in the post-wake dramas of the remaing family for comfort, and must draw heavily on her intuition, intelligence and wit to get out alive.
This book was well worth the read, a well-written and satisfying mystery that charged forward at pace, with plenty of clues, red herrings and suspects, and a central shocking revelation that genuinely put the cat amonst the pigeons.
There were some down sides: personally I don’t think Conway screams Irish; there was too much repetition of the brother’s failed attempt as an art thief and a missing painting; the pace was sometimes so fast that I was mixing up characters and their inter-relationships; there was never any mention of a man in the matriarch’s life; and I found it odd that the mayriarch’s eldest child wasn’t mentioned at all at the end, given the final revelations.
That said, I liked Kirstin as a character, and the hints at even greater wit and enterprise she is capable of. I also liked her interactions with DS Graham. So I do hope there will be more to come, perhaps featuring them both?
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023What fun! Day quickly pulls us into an atmospheric, stereotypically dreary funeral and creepy manor house. It’s easy to root for the underdog, our scrappy, slightly morally lax estate agent and want to see the rich snobs get what they deserve. But what is that, exactly? And is one of them more murderous than beau monde? With red herrings aplenty, this is a fun tale told well.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2023Overall I enjoyed reading Person of Interest, but it was definitely a slow burn for me until almost halfway through. I found myself struggling to remain focused. Once the pace picked up, it captured me and I fully enjoyed it from there. It’s unfortunate that’ the drawn out preamble before the it picked up, seemed to overshadow the great story afterwards.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2023The story structure captured everything you want in a story like this. The adventures or suspense was an excellent amount in the story. This is a new author for me and I will be coming back for more!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2023Person of Interest is a mystery thriller by Shirley Day. It is a quick and easy read that does leave you guessing until the very end.
In this story we meet Kirstin, a realtor, who will go to extreme lengths to get a new listing. She is a herst chaser with several contacts out there who let her know when there could potentially be a listing that she can swoop in and "help" the family out by being there to assist when they are overwhelmed with grief. She gets a hot tip on a highly coveted listing worth upwards of 8 million dollars. The one commission could set her for a long time. What she doesn't expect when she shows up at Carolyn Millford's funeral, is the mystery that she will become involved in. As she tries to figure out which of Carolyn's adult children will be her best way to obtain the listing, strange things start happening and she is unable to leave the island. As she unravels this mystery, she continues to get sucked further into the drama of the Milford family and starts to question all of their motives.
The plot of this book was promising for me, but the first half of the book dragged on for so long, with not much happening to keep me interested. The second half of the book definitely picks up, and we find ourselves right in the middle of a pretty good mystery plot. I prefer a much quicker paced read that I can hardly put down, so this one was just ok for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puzzling deaths
When Carolyn Millford, a famous celebrity dies suddenly, a young lady, Kirsten goes for the funeral with the intention of flipping her house. Who will inherit the house and will they be amenable to selling it? Kirsten is stranded when her car breaks down and she gets run over. She has no option but to stay with the Millfords and she discovers some unsavory secrets. Meanwhile the murder of one of the heirs puts paid to her plans and her own life is in danger. A haunting story with a lot of intrigue and twists. I liked the portrayal of the characters and the story line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing
This high quality, modern mystery has the timeless feel of a classic, the beauty is in the details, and includes a diverse cast of characters with their own baggage and secrets. As the reader falls down the rabbit hole, layer upon layer of mystery and secrets are revealed with flawless elegance, wit, and depth.
I have only one question: will there be a sequel??

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this
I so enjoyed this book. I was determined to ration it so I didn’t read it all in one go but I failed miserably. It hooks you in and doesn’t let go. The twist was completely unpredicted and I really didn’t know who had ‘done it’ until the reveal. The main protagonist is very real, well rounded and witty and the reader likes her right from the off even if she does have her flaws. Despite being quite dark, there is warmth, humour and wit in the book. On an island off the coast of Cornwall, Kirsten gets involved with the dubious Milford family. As the story unfolds, no one is who they seem to be and the plot twists and turns with a couple of corpses and near misses. Highly recommend this book if you like a well plotted whodunnit.
