4.4 out of 5 stars 1,947 ratings

All's not fair in love and war.

As the Great War rages, two brothers, Leo and Alex, are ensnared in a captivating love triangle with the stunning Adelaide. While Leo is the unwavering protector, Alex, the enigmatic seducer, ultimately captures Adelaide's heart.

Their lives are further complicated by a baby girl of hidden Jewish lineage—a secret burden Leo chooses to bear alone. When the brothers are drafted to war, their world is torn apart, leaving Adelaide to navigate the treacherous waters of survival and betrayal.

As years go by and the landscape of their homeland changes with Hitler's rise, the family secrets become a ticking time bomb. Margot's true lineage, hidden in plain sight, becomes the very thing that may tear the family apart.

Dive into Roberta Kagan's heart-stopping saga of love, secrets, and the harsh price of betrayal during one of history's darkest times.

I am an USA Today Best Selling Author of Historical Jewish Fiction mainly set during World War 2. My father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, When I was very young I learned about the Holocaust. I couldn't understand how something like this could happen. So, I began to research and learn more. I met with survivors. I even met with children and grandchildren of SS officers. But I still had no answers. I cannot say that I have all of the answers to all of my questions even now. But what I do know is that soon all of the survivors will be gone. Their message must be remembered, the sacrifices that they made must not be forgotten. And so I humbly and with the utmost humility I try to tell their stories. It is painful, but I must convey the darkness and horror of the time, However, I also want the world to know and celebrate the unsung heroes. Because there were many ordinary people who acted in heroic ways. I realize that writing these books is a great responsibility. I pray every day that I am able to do this correctly. I am trying to reach out and touch many people, not with the message of the horrors but with the promise of hope. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my work. It is an honor that I never take lightly.

I send you many blessings, Roberta

This was an all engrossing story but I guess I didn’t notice that the next book will tie into this book so the ending was very abrupt. Still I’m glad I read it and must see if book 2 is out or expected soon.

The author tries to bring so many things out in this book. The story at times is slow and at other times moves quickly. I will hold my opinion until I read the next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading a story that was from the perspective of the people who weren’t Jews during the years before Hitler came into power. The meeting between Alex and Adolf as young men of university age was what caught my attention and as the book goes on it incorporates dynamic and historical events that each complex character experiences and expresses in their own unique ways. Looking forward to Book 2!

This book was a little more unusual since it was written from a German family ‘s point of view and depicted the daily struggles they went through during the First World War and the times leading up to the second one. There are many problematic family issues … but also a theme of true friendship. The family will be torn apart as the war progresses and sides are picked. I’m looking forward to the next chapter in their lives!
