About the Author

Gina was born in the late 1950s to a mum who frequently abandoned her in a pram outsideWoolworths and a dad who after two pints of beer could play a mean Boogie Woogie on the piano in the front room of their 3-bed semi on the Wirral. Being the less adventurous of three children, she remains there to this day - apart from a long weekend in Bognor Regis in 1982. Her teenage years were filled with angst, a CSE in Arithmetic, raging pimples and Barry White. Marriage and motherhood ensued, followed by divorce in her early thirties and a desperate need for a career and some form of financial support for herself and her young daughter. Trundling a three-wheeled trike along a leafy path one wintry day, memories of her favourite author Enid Blyton, ginger beer and solving mysteries along with her lifelong passion to be a police officer, excitedly gave way to an epiphany. And thus began an enjoyable and fulfilling career with Merseyside Police.

On reaching an age most women lie about, she quickly adapted to retirement by utilising her policing skills to chase after two granddaughters, two dogs and one previously used, but still in excellent condition, husband. Having said goodbye to what had been a huge part of her life, she suddenly had another epiphany. This time it was to put pen to paper to write a book based on her experiences as a police officer. Lying in bed one night staring at the ceiling, Gina's alter-ego Mavis Upton was born, ready to star in a humorous and sometimes poignant look at the life, loves and career of an everyday girl who followed a dream and embarked upon a search for the missing piece of her childhood.

Murders at the Rookery Grange Retreat by Gina Kirkham

The story begins with the flashback of what appeared to be a murder-suicide of a couple in front of their Christmas tree thirty years ago.

The time period jumps to the present, where one patient at the Rookery Grange Retreat has a questionable accident, and another appears to have been smothered by her pillow. The Retreat is in a panic, led by a few elderly women.

The librarian, Pru Pearce, while planning her wedding to a police detective named Andy Barnes, recruits him to assist her in investigating these events.

It’s a race against time! The culprit on the loose needs to be found before he murders again! This story is fast paced, and exciting. Kirkham’s character developments and descriptive settings make for a wonderful leap into the world of the Rookery Grange Retreat! I definitely recommend this book!

I have to say, this book had me from the cover's tagline: the weather outside is frightful but revenge is so delightful. I mean, who could resist?
The Rookery Grange Retreat is a care facility for the elderly --some go for a short stay to recover and recuperate, others go to live out the rest of their days. But suddenly residents are turning up murdered in their bedrooms, black angel wings pinned to their lapels. Enter the most entertaining cast of "detectives" I have ever encountered. On one side are Pru and her best friend Bree. While they both have day jobs, they also do some amateur sleuthing (this is actually part of a series of cozy crime novels featuring Pru). And on the other are the Four Wrinkled Dears, a quartet of elderly friends who are convinced there's a serial killer on the loose and they're going to catch him with Operation Bloomers.
While I loved Pru and Bree, I absolutely adored the Wrinkled Dears! They were hilarious and charming and just plain endearing with their antics and their cheeky banter. Honestly, I'd follow them around just to see what they got up to next and to see what mad thing Hilda says next.
The mystery itself was also quite intriguing. Every few chapters we'd get a chapter from the killer's POV and I kept forming theories and guessing like crazy, but I didn't get it right. Because it's a cozy crime, the action picked up, but even the grim bits were overshadowed by the humor and fun of the storytelling and the characters. If it isn't clear by now, I loved them all and will most definitely be reading the other books in the series to spend more time with Pru, Bree, and all the Wrinkled Dears!
If you're looking for a cozy mystery that will have you cackling as you curl up with a cocoa or cuppa and your book, this is the perfect choice!

I love going back to Winterbottom and all the ladies in the WI. It makes it easier to fully appreciate the story as there’s no need to get to know the characters.
The plot is once again brilliant and i loved guessing the culprit and trying my hand at solving the murders. The story kept surprising me all the way through though.
I love the we finally got to experience Pru and Andy’s wedding as I’ve always really enjoyed their relationship. It’s somewhat of a model relationship for me.
All in all a brilliant murder mystery, this reminds me a lot of Christie’s Marple books

I love a murder suicide and that will never change because my favorite book is in cold blood.
Only thing that could have made this better was if it was a true story.
I don’t know why but I found quirkiness in this story that created a fast pace for me.
I thought it was cute, engaging and mysterious.
I want more from this author for sure.

I received this book for free from Bloodhound Books.

This is the third book in a series. I haven't read the others, but I was able to follow along fine.

This book had a lot of laughs but was also very chilling.

I was enthralled throughout the book.

I will definitely go back to read the first two books now.
