- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2025I bought this book the second it came out. I love the storytelling and the new world building occurring here. The characters are thought out and the dialogue is natural and well paced. The only thing that I might stipulate as an issue is that the title is mildly misleading, and really only refers to a potential future for the main character, and it refers to the history of the world we are reading about. Besides this I am pumped to explore more of this world and characters as the plot unfolds in the next book. I believe that we will be able to watch more growth of magic and power of the dragons in the future, however I am still very. happy with this read. Excellent summer break book and a great escape from the mundane world.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2024Solid opening to a new series.
DR continues displaying Matharu's worldbuilding abilities. The magic system especially is great. You can definitely see the DNA it shares with the Summoner Trilogy, but it trades much of the RPG-esque mechanics for something that really illustrates how tough being a mage on the run is.
It's definitely a darker and grittier world that makes everything a struggle. There were definitely times I was just thinking "How bad is Jai's luck?", but it made the moments when things actually went right feel like such a relief.
Characters are a bit of a mixed bag for me. The earlier parts between Jai and his brothers were great and I loved seeing how close they are with each other and Jai, Frida, and Rufus in general were good.
The antagonists, though, were not my fav. I sincerely hope this series doesn't take a route where the good guys try to reform the empire or something because, good grief, does that kingdom feel like it's beyond redemption. The number of Sabines shown who WEREN'T vicious racists can be counted on one hand. Normally, I can respect it when bad guys just don't seem to care that they're utter monsters and instead own it, but when just about every antagonist is a shameless sadist, it get's old quick.
The only other thing that bugged me was the amount of 'adult' jokes... and I frankly loath to call them that. By the time I finished, I was rolling my eyes from how cringe-inducing they were. I really hope Matharu reels that in for book 2. Granted, I've rarely liked jokes like that anyway, so maybe I just have a low tolerance for them.
All in all, the book gets far more right than it gets wrong for me and I want to see where Jai and his adventures go.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2024This book contains the same style of writing that made the Summoner Series so fantastic, but you can clearly see progression. The target audience for Dragon Rider is a touch older than the Summoner Series as it tackles class structure, political intrigue, and warfare with a direct and clear lens. That said, there still maintains a fantasy element that is naturally woven into the narrative that only adds to the story - rather than take away from it due to over-the-top supernatural additions.
At times the story is quite gritty, but this makes the characters feel real in their struggle. Everything they accomplish feels earned.
It's a fantastic read - I'm looking forward to the remainder of the saga.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 27, 2024Ok read not as good as the summoner series feels like something missing in the writing and story like he’s trying to hard to make it more adult did not care for the vulgar references it felt out of place and forced in his writing
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2024An excellent beginning for an epic tale. I look forward to the next installment with an appreciation for this author’s mastery of a whole world and societies of its different cultures.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2025➤ 𝚂𝚈𝙽𝙾𝙿𝚂𝙸𝚂
Taran Matharu’s debut adult fantasy kicks off with an action-packed tale of magic, warriors, and dragons. Jai, a royal hostage whose father died leading a failed rebellion, seizes his chance to escape when chaos erupts in the Sabine Court. Fleeing with Frida, a Dansk handmaiden, and a stolen dragon hatchling, he must unlock the secrets of soulbonding and cultivation magic to survive. As an empire seeks to control the power of dragons, Jai’s journey becomes one of survival, revenge, and reclaiming his destiny.
➤ 𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙶𝙷𝚃𝚂
This book starts off slow—so slow I nearly tapped out—but once the plot finds its wings (literally), it’s an exhilarating ride. Jai, a hostage-turned-dragon-thief, stumbles into a soulbond with a hatchling named Winter, kicking off a desperate escape alongside Frida, a dragon handler with her own troubles. The magic system is detailed and fascinating, but Jai seems to level up a little too fast, skipping the usual struggle that makes power growth satisfying. Political intrigue, discrimination, and the Sabine Court’s ambition to dominate through soulbonded creatures add depth, though the sheer number of factions can get overwhelming. Rufus, an unexpected ally, steals some of the spotlight, while Jai and Frida’s slow-burn relationship is both frustrating and rewarding. Short chapters keep the pace snappy, especially in the action-packed second half, but the ending? Brutal. Purely evil. I have questions and anger, but also a desperate need for book two.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2024This story is a fascinating combination of creative magic and good triumphing over evil. A truly great work of creativity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Exciting and yet not exactly what I was looking for
When I finished Forth Wing I went straight into a reading hangover looking for similar books. After I read the blot of Dragonrider I was thrilled and excited and started reading immediately. I had to endure the first 100 pages, for I found them a bit boring. After that it turned out to be an exciting pageturner. It gave me a lot of Game of Thrones vibes and I kinda liked it. But to be honest it is not the best book I've ever read and it was not exactly what I was looking for. For me as a non native speaker the style of writing was difficult which sometimes gave me a leak of imagination of the world.
I couldn't build up any connection to the characters, for their description was only on the surface. That's why I had a huge leak of emotions though they had to face some very brutal and agonizing situations. I'm also not sure wheter I like Jai or not, for he never made me both laugh or rolling my eyes. I love Winter and I really think Rufus is a very interesting character with a lot of edges and secrets (which I prefer in a character).
I also hoped there would be a bit more romance, but maybe this will be later on in the series.
In a nutshell I had a good time reading this book, but I'm not sure if I'll continue with this serie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterfully written
I have no idea where to start with Dragon Rider. It is definitely a master piece. Skillfully written with plenty of action, phenomenal world building, and complex political world.
Jai is a prisoner living in the castle serving the elderly former royal emperor who killed Jai's father. He has two older brothers who are companions to the Price Titus. While the Dansk royal come to marry their princess to Titus, things get very complicated and bloody. Jai barely escapes with his life and goes on the run.
While on the run, Jai finds a dragon egg and soul bounds with it. The story is definitely fast-paced and gripping and will keep you on the edge. The bond between Jai and his dragon, Winter, is so beautiful to read and loved watching their relationship develop into a strong bond.
Dragon Rider is definitely a world you will get lost into and enjoy it. It is full of magic, dragons, gruphon, khiroi, and dire wolves. I highly recommend this stunner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing start of a saga!
One of the best reads this year!! Epic!! It’s a story that follows Jai, a prince taken hostage from a young age and his journey to get back to his motherland.
It is well written, the world building is magical, the intricate magical system is mind boggling and the fantastical beasts are just amazing.
Jai, Frida and Rufus are characters with such depth, and Jai’s character development throughout is just breathtaking.
The plot’s twist and turns keep you on the edge of your seat.
However, the book finishes on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next one to come out!!!
