THE POLITICAL SCRIPTING OF JESUS: Utilizing the Savior Story to Exercise Power Today - The Debate over Vatican Censures, Apocrypha, and Literary Interpretations Kindle Edition

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 2 ratings

In 2000, 2004, and 2005, the Vatican issued doctrinal censures against the works of three Catholic theologians. The main tension in The Political Scripting of Jesus revolves around the political stakes behind the disputation: by identifying severally the particular objectives of each dissentient treatise vis-à-vis the established prerogatives of the Roman incumbent, it moreover explores the existential insights within the various narrative strands of Christology at a time of quasi-complete Catholic disaffection in the West.

The purpose of this study is thus to fathom what the Savior Story, in its essentials, actually signifies — per se and for the existence of an institution such as the Catholic Church in this day and epoch — and what such a belief ultimately commands the believer
to do as a (political) member of society.

The discussion of all such topics is, in connection with the inquisitorial notifications, accompanied by a variety of literary themes and sociological detours, such as the Gospel of Judas, Veblen’s reflections on primitive Christianity, Tolstoy’s re-elaboration on the New Testament, and, when touching on multiculturalism, the novels and aphorisms of Japanese Catholics, such as Akutagawa and Endo.

I grabbed this after hearing him talk about it on the Regeneratio podcast, because he raised such good questions about the Gospels that I'd never considered, the nature of the Kingdom vs our eye on political integralism. This book deepens the question, but doesn't give an answer. It kicks open the doors and analyses the problem. I personally would have been grateful to understand how Preparata himself brings it all together in himself, and how he makes sense of these themes of abandonment and a suicidal God in the face of growing insectification by parasites, within and without the Church.

Certain authors have a knack for captivating readers to the extent that upon finishing one of their books, one feels compelled to delve into more of their work. This is precisely the case for me when reading the works of Mr. Preparata. This particular book can be viewed in conjunction with Preparata's "Church and State." It explores Catholic perspectives that fell into taboo territory as deemed by the Congregatio pro Doctrina Fidei or CDF (the Church's inquisitional arm) between 2000-2005. These taboo perspectives ranged from blending Christianity with insurrectionist Marxism (Sobrino) to attempting to reshape Catholicism to fit into a postmodern, pluralistic framework (Haight, Phan). Furthermore, the book delves into the intersection of Catholicism with multiculturalism and imperialism. For those who wish to understand the boundaries of acceptable and unacceptable thought within modern Catholic theology, I highly recommend it.
