Jesus the Son of Man Kindle Edition
What if we had firsthand impressions of the son of God found not in the pages of the New Testament, but from the very people who surrounded him? This is what Kahlil Gibran imagined in this lyrical and inspiring book. He captured the observations of friends, enemies, commoners, and rulers in beautifully poetic passages. Anna the mother of Mary said of her daughter, “Sometimes it seems that my longing for Him is greater than hers. She stands as firm before the day as if she were a bronzen image, while my heart melts and runs intro streams. Perhaps she knows what I do not know. Would that she might tell me also.” James, the son of Zebedee warned, “The only man among us who did not turn to behold Him in His aloneness was Judas Iscariot. And from that day Judas became sullen and distant. And methought there was danger in the sockets of his eyes.”
“It is as a fellow-countryman that [Gibran] approaches the Man of Nazareth. What we have in his case is not history but drama, a series of soliloquies, poetic in structure and beauty, which are attributed to the contemporaries of Jesus, sometimes authentic, like Mary Magdalen, sometimes imagined, as Philemon, a Greek apothecary. Of the immortal theme, here is a treatment, certainly unusual, possibly unique . . . The opinions about Jesus, whether appreciative or depreciatory, when attributed to his contemporaries, are often brilliant in phrase and accurate in perception.” —The New York Times

About the authors
Kahlil Gibran: full Arabic name Gibran Khalil Gibran, (January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer of the New York Pen League.
Kahlil Gibran was born in the town of Bsharri in the Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Ottoman Empire (north of modern-day Lebanon), to Khalil Gibran and Kamila Gibran(Rahmeh). As a young man Kahlil emigrated with his family to the United States, where he studied art and began his literary career, writing in English and Arabic. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero.
He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again, especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Laozi.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024I had this book myself & was buying it for someone. But I was not happy with the first purchase, a paperback. It seemed slightly used. So, I ordered this one. It is an excellent book, full of poetic phrases, based on Scripture, & each chapter is from the viewpoint of someone who encountered Jesus. Very thought-provoking & beautiful. Not a fast read, though the chapters generally are short, but because there is so much to think about. Not everyone had favorable thoughts about Jesus, but he impacted all. An outstanding book to be treasured! The cover, however, was just ok on this deluxe version.
This is the same author that wrote The Prophet, Khalil Gibran.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2024This is an interesting book and thoughtfully written. It would be a great teacher’s companion for encouraging students to learn how people may have lived in the Holy Land during the same period of time as Jesus.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2007Gibran's reputation as a poet and profound thinker is confirmed in this book.
He employs history, Biblical text and his imagination to conjure 'interviews' with folks who may have been intimate with Jesus or affected by His presence from a distance.
His insight is exceptionally believable and he takes you on a journey that is both mystical and practical with the varying points of view. The positives are for believers primarily, and one will be filled with a sense of awe and intimacy toward Jesus. Nevertheless the voice of skeptics is heard, though in the minority, but it is given due attention.
The downside may be for those who are not so poetically inclined. Khalil's voice through those who admire Jesus is extremely metaphoric and it may be lost on those who need a more 'down to earth' description of feelings, emotions and attitudes. I felt at times that the discourses were perhaps too symbolic, though one understood the implication of the experience of encountering Jesus as beyond words.
In the end one is left understanding Jesus' impact more but hungering to know Him in a way that is more understandable than the sometimes amorphous descriptions by Gibran's characters. The interviews are fairly short and this makes it a manageable read for the most 'unbookish' of us.
All the same a great read and a classic anyone should have.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2013I enjoyed reading this book for two reasons.
1) Because it encouraged me as a writer and opened up my mind to the power of Khalil's style.
2) Because it drew me closer to what Jesus life might have been like and reminded me that even two thousand years ago people were submitted to judgement and ridicule. I love the way Kahlil paints images in the mind of the reader, evoking the personality of each person in his book to the point that I almost thought I knew them.
While reading this book I felt closer to Jesus and at times wanted to reach out and comfort him!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2015A series of short stories and poems that highlight the understanding of Jesus held ft his followers and enemies.
Many of the stories and insights are highly illuminating, particularly those of his enemies, as they force us to consider facets of Jesus that we might not have before.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2022One of the best books i have ever read on Jesus. I could not wait to finish it.
I am not Christian by religion. But love
Him. Will read again and again.
Every one should read it for the
love of Divine.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2014This book is written so beautifully that it is hard to put into words how much I enjoy it. Mr. Gibran takes verses from the bible and turns them into songs of wonder. He makes you feel as if you're right there with Jesus and all the people listening to him. I'm sure that I will read it many more times. A big thank you to Les Visible for telling me about it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2013The product is as advertised-an older book in good condition. It was recommended to me by a priest friend. I'm finding it more inspirational than I had expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, the son of Man touching human hearts
The book is so well written to understand Jesus in plain poetic language. I woud suggest to take this book along with anyone for his or her next retreat in quiet place to reflect on Human Jesus in simple language, not theological or pulpit preachng style, but touching our hearts and souls to the foundations of our human beings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old but modern for time.
This book is immersive, as each character is introduced. You are invited to peer into the privy of their thoughts. The style of writing is very unique and quite modern for it time.
This book deserves more then a five star rating the author does not fail to live up to the style of his writing.
Worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different View of Bible Readings
This is a book one has to read slowly a small section at a time. Kahlil Gibran in his subtle and exciting way puts a twist on every story. We are told the story of Ciaphas the High Priest and his justification for executing Jesus. The stories bring to life the Biblical characters associated with Jesus, and show their relationship to Him and the events of that time. I found this very useful in helping my understanding of the historical background of the Bible.
