Close Quarters (The Barsetshire Novels) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

A widow goes house-hunting in Barsetshire in this witty, moving novel by an author of “graceful stories of upper-class English life” (The New York Times).

One rainy summer, amid the social and cultural changes of postwar England, Mrs. Macfadyen wrestles with the loss of her beloved husband after just five years of happiness. Life has left her uprooted—but where can she replant herself? The hunt for a new house (preferably not too close to her mother’s) will involve everyone from friends and neighbors to an old suitor and the local clergy, but ultimately the decision—and her future—is up to her . . .

Recreating Anthony Trollope’s fictional county and bringing it into the mid-twentieth century, Angela Thirkell tells a tale filled with heartache, humor, and sharp social observation.

“It is in [Mrs. Macfadyen’s] fitful remembrance, quiet loneliness and gentle acceptance, that one realizes her author’s sense of the poetry in life, and her sympathetic ear for the nuances of pain.” —

This was a used book and was in excellent condition. I can not wait to read it. The service was awesome.

Especially considering the outrageous Kindle price, there are a lot of sloppy mistakes in this version.

This book is , not to put too fine a point on it, awful. In order to comprehend any of it you have to have read most of the previous books and even then this book is not very good. The characters blab on and on about nothing with frequent asides by the author. I have now read 5 books by Miss Thirkell and, for the most part, enjoyed them but this one is almost unreadable. Why two stars ? I like Angela Thirkell and I really liked the cover.

To me this is the best of the last few books about Barsetshire. Although dealing throughout with the sad themes of death and its aftermath it manages to feel fresher than some of Angela Thirkell's other later books in the series. I feel that this is down to the strongly written character of Margo who we have seen develop in Jutland Cottage and who now emerges as a fully rounded person in the face of a time of difficulty. Nicely oberved social commentary as usual adds to the enjoyable blend.
