Despite knowing it’s a mad idea, Lily agrees to take her mother on one last road trip around the UK, in this new novel by the bestselling author of His Other Woman.

This trip will be challenging because Lily’s mother can no longer be described as “just a bit forgetful”: Moira has started talking to imaginary friends and singing ABBA songs in public, and last week she began emptying boxes of cereal onto the floor in the supermarket.

Lily is worried and embarrassed by her mother’s behavior but, despite her recent dementia diagnosis, Moira is happy—albeit in a sweary sort of way—and insists the journey will help her write a memoir.

As they trundle across the country in an ancient VW campervan, Lily feels the strain as she struggles to deal with her mother’s decline, her own daughter’s criticism and her ex-husband’s upcoming wedding plans to a younger woman. One night, leaving Moira alone in the hotel, Lily meets a man in a bar and, for the first time in years, she feels alive.

This road trip was intended to celebrate the past. But will it end in crisis, or might Lily’s chance encounter help build a new future for this fractured family?

Hello and thank you for visiting my author page! I am the author of seven novels, the most recent of which is THE WEDDING, which tells the story of Meg who travels to Wales for the wedding of her university friend, Polly. Meg has been looking forward to this, but over the course of the following 24 hours old resentments rise to the surface, grievances are aired and secrets are revealed in the most catastrophic way. It will be a weekend Meg and her friends never forget, but for all the wrong reasons.

Before turning to fiction, I worked as a journalist for many years, and during my career I interviewed hundreds of people with stories to tell. Listening to their experiences gave me a fascinating insight into humanity in all its guises: what makes people tick and how they react to whatever life throws at them. I aim to write books that suck the reader in: plots that keep you turning the pages and characters who work their way inside your head. The sort of books where you have to read just one more chapter before you turn off the bedside light at night.

I live in Gloucestershire with my husband and far too many animals and we have three grown up children. If you'd like to find out more about me and my writing, please visit my website - www. sarahedghill. com

In THE GOOD DAUGHTER (publ Oct 24) Eve is struggling to hold things together as emotional and physical demands are being made on her from all sides: her elderly mother has just gone into a nursing home, her young son is playing up at school and her ex seems to be enjoying a perfect life with his new wife and their daughter. Then Eve discovers a family secret that threatens to undermine everything she thought she knew about her own past.

In THE POOL (publ June 24) two sisters and their families arrive for a holiday at a French villa, to find a dead body floating in the swimming pool. As the police investigate and the media get hold of the story, the two families find their already fragile bonds are ripped apart and long-held resentments and secrets come to the fore.

In MEMORY ROAD (publ March 24) Lily takes her elderly mother, Moira, on one last roadtrip around the UK. As they trundle across the country in a battered old campervan, Lily feels the strain as she struggles to deal with her mother's decline, her own daughter's criticism and her ex-husband's forthcoming marriage to a younger woman.

THE BAD WIFE (publ June 23) tells the story of Katie, who becomes obsessed by a stranger and starts to worm her way into his life, with devastating consequences for both of them. Katie can't get local GP Joe Harvey out of her mind, but he barely knows she exists... yet.

In HIS OTHER WOMAN (publ May 22), Lucy's husband goes missing having sent her one brief text asking her not to get in touch. She eventually discovers he is with another woman, but it's not who she thinks it it, and the results may be more devastating than an affair.

A THOUSAND TINY DISAPPOINTMENTS (publ Sept 21) tells the story of Martha, whose mother dies unexpectedly and leaves everything a stranger. Struggling with grief and finding herself unsupported by her uninterested husband and bullying brother, Martha is left facing the ultimate moral dilemma: should she carry out her mother’s last wishes, or destroy the evidence so no one will ever know?

I loved this book. It had all the emotions, funny, sweet, sad. It takes something as tragic as losing a loved one to dementia and showing the tender parts of it as well as the hard parts. The book balanced humor along with the realities of family dynamics and even a love story. I loved the relationship between Lily and her mother and how Lily tried balancing what is best for her mom mentally and physically. I also really liked how all of the characters showed growth in themselves and their relationships by the end of the book.

Lily is taking her elderly mother on a road trip around the UK, revisiting places which meant a lot to her. It’s challenging because Moira can no longer be described as ‘a bit forgetful’; she has started singing Abba songs in public and talking to imaginary friends, and last week she tried to rip off her clothes in Poundland.

Lily is worried and embarrassed by her mother’s behaviour but, despite the recent dementia diagnosis, Moira is happy – albeit in a sweary sort of way – and insists the journey will help her write a memoir. As they clatter across the country in an ancient VW campervan, they’re intending to celebrate the past. But a chance encounter for Lily, means this road trip may also be about building a new future.

It's not that I didn't like the book. It's just that everything was left unfinished. I kept expecting more. This story had a lot of possibilities--it needed to be longer.

There is so much in Memory Road that I related to. I adored this book! It is a story about family and the relationships between mothers and daughters. It is about figuring out how to talk to your fiercely independent, successful, demanding, and slightly terrifying daughter without alienating her. It is about figuring out what is important to you and being open to taking chances. It is about realizing that things don’t have to be perfect and sometimes it is ok to not behave perfectly. It is about finding a way to be present and celebrate life. It is about being a family and being there for the good days and the bad.

Lily is sandwiched between two forceful women, her mother Moira who is acting out in public and becoming more forgetful as her dementia progresses, and Eleanor, her stubborn and successful daughter, and often feels less than. When Lily agrees to take her mother on a road trip to visit places from her past in order to write her memoir, Eleanor thinks it is a ridiculous plan and doesn’t want them to go. As Lily spends time with her mother and experiences the good days and the bad days the relationship begins to change. An encounter with an attractive man adds another thing for Lily to think about. But when Eleanor shows up will she put an end to the road trip? What will this do to the relationships?

This is a book that will stay with you after you finish reading it. An exploration of family relationships between mothers and daughters while dealing with a diagnostic of dementia, this book will make you cry, laugh and will squeeze your heart with lots of emotions.
With a diagnostic dementia Moira wants to go on a road trip with her daughter Lily of all the important places on her life, in order to write a book to leave for Lily and her daughter Eleanor.
There are lots of surprises and heartbreaking situations during this trip, but also an opportunity for second chances in life, in the romantic sense, but also a chance to reconnect and start anew on family relationships, especially of Lily and her daughter, but also to learn how to navigate this new life of living with someone who in the near future most probably won’t even recognize you.
Beautifully written this book will warm your heart and make you look into yourself and your relationships with the people you love in your life.

A heart-warming, entertaining and emotional story that touches on so many nuisances of real life with humor and kindness. The story line is so true to life for many of us who deal with family members with dementia and sometimes a little humor is just what you need. The characters are well developed and overall just a truly enjoyable book! This book made me laugh as well as wipe my eyes and really “brought me in” to the characters’ lives! Highly recommend!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A sensitive subject, beautifully crafted
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2024
I was slightly hesitant about reading this book given the subject matter. My own Mum had dementia and I was not sure I wanted to go back there. But I have thoroughly enjoyed Sarah Edghill’s previous three books - always pacy, absorbing and thought-provoking - so I decided to give it a go. And I was glad I did! It was another hugely engaging tale, treated with sensitivity, care and appropriate humour. There are some very touching, tear-jerking and heart-warming moments between the protagonist and her mother and daughter, as well as a good dose of humour. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this. I wrongly thought this would be too sad to read, as it covers dementia. But actually it was full of love, laughs, and hope. It did admit things are hard, that mistakes happen. But overall, it just left me feeling warm. I enjoyed the touch of romance, and the focus on three women of different ages. Just a nice, fairly quick read (certainly read in less time than the road journey!).

This book focusses on family relationships and also deals with some serious issues (dementia) and yet it is done in an engaging way with a sense of humour. I found it easy to identify with the characters and it was a charming read which made me laugh in places .. in particular in relation to Moira.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that almost everybody will enjoy

On several different levels this is a delightful book. Sarah Edgehill runs the gamut of readers' emotions with this story, mainly, but not solely about the relationships between Lily's Mum Moira with developing dementia, Lily's daughter Eleanor, distant and self absorbed and of course selfless Lily herself invariably coping, keeping the peace and problem solving on their road trip together.
Great characters throughout, a good story - what more could you ask>

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 4, 2024
I read this on Kindle in just under 2 hours. It is shorter than most books are these days at around 256 pages. Saying that, it’s an easy read, well written and flows well. The characters are, mainly, charming if a bit predictable. I enjoyed the interaction between Lily and her mum, it’s such a difficult journey for families and the author sensitively captured the joy as well as the heartbreak. I also thought the ending was a bit abrupt, the storylines still had legs and the book could have been longer.
