About the author
Mark Craemer is a leadership coach and organization development consultant. His company Craemer Consulting focuses on improving workplace communication and developing leaders in organizations both large and small. Since 2007, he’s built a reputation for raising leadership capacity in people in a variety of roles and industries based on the belief that everyone can demonstrate greater competency by embracing who they are with what they do. This means leveraging their strengths and confronting their opportunities for continual growth.
Prior to launching his own company, Mark spent 16 years in management positions with technology companies where he often witnessed inefficiency and dysfunction due to a lack of effective interpersonal communication and other soft skills. He holds a master’s degree in applied behavioral science from the Leadership Institute of Seattle and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon.
Mark’s book "Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace" is based on the extensive coaching and consulting work he has done using emotional intelligence to help his clients reach their full potential in the workplace.
He has also written literary short fiction for many years and "I Remember Clifford and Other Stories," is his first collection to be published in a book. He lives in Seattle with his family.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2024I'm a stubborn person to admit or see any opportunity in colleagues problem, this book gives me a lot of ideas on how manage situations and improve communication with them
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2021I *really* like this book...after a first read, I find myself going back to it repeatedly, re-reading dog-eared pages and cribbing several of the techniques captured on handy one-page summaries, throughout the book. An excellent resource for practitioners.
A bit more on what stands out...
1. This book is a work-horse, plain and simple. Compared with other published work in the category (I’ve been reading a lot, lately), Craemer's book is exceptionally well organized, with a great design of the chapter-level components (section length, practice/assessment prompts, and 1-page summaries sprinkled throughout (e.g. Practicing Empathy on page 72).
2. Readability is tops – articulate and plain-spoken; doesn’t enrage my inner grammarian but also reads like real people speak.
3. Resources/references – great annotations; for such a concise read, it's a remarkably well-researched/supported book; for me, this adds *a lot* of value, as I periodically go hunting for sources of inspiration or depth, by topic.
All in all, EI/W has earned a permanent spot on my office bookshelf. Hope to see more from this author!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2021It sounds like I grew up in a similar household as the author and "feelings" were not as important as getting things done. Sure, I care about my employees and try my best to see things from their perspectives, but this book gives me additional insight into how to do that even better.
I like that the advice isn't just presented as fact and left at that. The book is full of examples and, while I may not identify with each of them, I think there are enough that you can get the ideas.
There is a self-assessment included at the back of the book so that you can see where you rank and where you may be a bit deficient. This helps you target the parts of the book that may be more relevant/helpful to your growth.
Granted, much of it may seem like obvious advice, it is worth remembering that it may not be the same for others. There are short sections on stress management and conflict management techniques. They're not really in-depth and provide more general guidance than specific ways to deal with these things. Arguably, every situation is different and no book is going to be able to cover specifically how to deal with each of them, so that is expected.
For me, the most valuable section is probably the one on giving and getting feedback. I think it is an interesting and helpful read if you're interested in getting started down a path towards improving your interactions with others, both in the workplace and outside.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2020This is a great book, one I wish I had read before I began my 20+ years as at Microsoft. Microsoft was an exciting, stimulating, and often challenging place to work in the early days. The rough and tumble workplace brought out the best and worst in people...including me! Having the insights and practical tools in this book would have helped me be more effective as an individual, team member, and leader. And, as important, I'd have enjoyed the wild ride more.
I'm eager to apply what I learned from this book to my post-Microsoft career and will encouragd all of my employees to read it.
