His company Craemer Consulting focuses on improving workplace communication and developing leaders in organizations both large and small. Mark’s book "Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace" is based on the extensive coaching and consulting work he has done using emotional intelligence to help his clients reach their full potential in the workplace.

Improve Your Emotional Intelligence for a More Successful Career
We all want to do better on the job. We normally think of doing better in relation to knowledge, but there is another measurement that is just as important to success, perhaps even more so. I’m talking about emotional intelligence, or EQ. The important of EQ and how to improve your own is the subject of this book, Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace.Self- awareness, emotional understanding, empathy, being able to read the emotions of others- these are all important components of emotional intelligence and they are mentioned repeatedly in this book. I think we can all agree that getting to know and understand people on a more personal, emotional level makes a big difference in an often cold, shallow workplace. Thinking back to management personnel I have worked with over the years, the ones that stood out as the best were, more often than not, people who exhibited high levels of emotional intelligence. You felt comfortable around them and you were much more likely to share things with them and work collaboratively with them. Most people think their own EQ is higher than it truly is. I took the self- test in the back of the book and I did rank in the top group, but barely- only by a point. There is much to work on and I like how this book stresses so many different aspects of EQ, all of which are important if we are serious about improving our emotional intelligence. Personally, my greatest challenges are self- awareness and knowing when to make myself vulnerable. One problem I have always had is asking for help. I would often spend far too much time trying to work something out when all I needed to do was ask someone. I am getting better at this, but there is much work to be done and this book has many useful bits of advice to help get me past these and other emotional intelligence barriers.Knowledge does make a difference in any job and it is often the deciding factor in having a successful interview and landing a position. But beyond that, emotional intelligence is the key. This is a short, practical, and easy guide to achieving the emotional intelligence level you need for success and it earns an easy recommendation from me.

I'm a stubborn person to admit or see any opportunity in colleagues problem, this book gives me a lot of ideas on how manage situations and improve communication with them

I *really* like this book...after a first read, I find myself going back to it repeatedly, re-reading dog-eared pages and cribbing several of the techniques captured on handy one-page summaries, throughout the book. An excellent resource for practitioners.

A bit more on what stands out...

    1. This book is a work-horse, plain and simple. Compared with other published work in the category (I’ve been reading a lot, lately), Craemer's book is exceptionally well organized, with a great design of the chapter-level components (section length, practice/assessment prompts, and 1-page summaries sprinkled throughout (e.g. Practicing Empathy on page 72).

    2. Readability is tops – articulate and plain-spoken; doesn’t enrage my inner grammarian but also reads like real people speak.

    3. Resources/references – great annotations; for such a concise read, it's a remarkably well-researched/supported book; for me, this adds *a lot* of value, as I periodically go hunting for sources of inspiration or depth, by topic.

All in all, EI/W has earned a permanent spot on my office bookshelf. Hope to see more from this author!

It sounds like I grew up in a similar household as the author and "feelings" were not as important as getting things done. Sure, I care about my employees and try my best to see things from their perspectives, but this book gives me additional insight into how to do that even better.

I like that the advice isn't just presented as fact and left at that. The book is full of examples and, while I may not identify with each of them, I think there are enough that you can get the ideas.

There is a self-assessment included at the back of the book so that you can see where you rank and where you may be a bit deficient. This helps you target the parts of the book that may be more relevant/helpful to your growth.

Granted, much of it may seem like obvious advice, it is worth remembering that it may not be the same for others. There are short sections on stress management and conflict management techniques. They're not really in-depth and provide more general guidance than specific ways to deal with these things. Arguably, every situation is different and no book is going to be able to cover specifically how to deal with each of them, so that is expected.

For me, the most valuable section is probably the one on giving and getting feedback. I think it is an interesting and helpful read if you're interested in getting started down a path towards improving your interactions with others, both in the workplace and outside.

This is a great book, one I wish I had read before I began my 20+ years as at Microsoft. Microsoft was an exciting, stimulating, and often challenging place to work in the early days. The rough and tumble workplace brought out the best and worst in people...including me! Having the insights and practical tools in this book would have helped me be more effective as an individual, team member, and leader. And, as important, I'd have enjoyed the wild ride more.

I'm eager to apply what I learned from this book to my post-Microsoft career and will encouragd all of my employees to read it.
