About the author

Julia writes historical romance with passion, intrigue, dark humor and the occasional animal sidekick. A tea-sodden English woman, she’s the only girl in a house of boys and yearns for all things pink and fluffy. If she isn’t writing, she’s probably reading everything she can get her hands on, spending time with her boys or procrastinating on the internet.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2024Twisty open-door gothic romance, lots of tension to keep the story moving. Very engaging, it was easy to become invested in Helen's plight and in her relationship with kind-hearted and principled Will. The realistic plot of a woman being institutionalized for no reason other than someone wants her out of the way, as well as the unscrupulous medical "care" Helen received, is a sobering reminder of how women have been treated throughout history. My only issue is that there were a lot of formatting issues throughout the Kindle edition, which took me slightly out of the story every time I came across one. Not the author's fault, and I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.
ETA: My understanding is that the formatting issues in the Kindle edition have now been fixed! :)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2024Loved it far more than expected. Very funny in a lot of places. Loved Somerton!
Will was someone to root for and Helen I wanted to know so much more about.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2024A gothic romance set in an insane asylum for women.
Helen Grey has been locked away in the asylum for ten years. But if she’s not insane, then why is she here? One day a new doctor, Doctor Carter shows up and things are never the same. Told in dual POV, this story is a true historical gothic romance that I absolutely adored.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2024I went into The Madness of Miss Grey expecting a gothic romance romp with plenty of twists and turns along the way and a strong couple to hold the novel up and I am glad to say that is exactly what I got.
This novel has gothic feel, being set on the moors of York in an asylum, but a dashing enough hero and a strong but also feminine feeling lead. Helen Grey is a curvy, woman of 26 who after 10 years trapped in an insane asylum while being perfectly sane, sees a new chance to try and find freedom when the rough but kind Dr. Will Carter starts on.
From the moment the novel opens the stakes are high and you as the reader are places in the POV of both our leads, seeing the emotional turmoil they both face as they fight through the odds.
I would pick this novel up if you enjoy:
- Gothic Vibes
- Forbidden Relationships
- Curvy FMC
- Soft/Kind MMC
- Spicy Romances
- Period Piece Romances
Read the trigger warnings as this novel does include some content akin to torture and medical abuse.
I received an advance review copy of this book and I am leaving this review voluntarily and all thoughts and opinions are wholly my own and unbiased.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2024If you love gothic romances and historical romances you’re going to love this book. It follows our main characters Helen Grey and Dr. Carter. Helen Grey has been kept in a private asylum for years and is seen as “untreatable”. Dr. Carter is set to be her new doctor, and he soon finds that what is said about her may not be true.
This book was thrilling from the beginning to the end. The things that are done to Helen are horrible and left me angry, but that anger was soon turned with how Dr. Carter treated Helen. I loved that Dr. Carter was characterized as being “plain” and not conventionally attractive, as often times we do not see male characters characterized as such. I also loved that Helen was strong, yet she was also flawed. I loved that Helen is seen as a woman who wants sex, oftentimes authors are too scared to make the female main character have a high sex drive.
I highly recommend this book to any who love historical romances and want gothic vibes!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2024I was hoping for more like romantic spookiness but instead it was a lot of torture scenes that were upsetting to read. I ended up skipping a lot of it because of that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Es auto publicado
Es auto publicado por lo que las medidas del libro son un poco grandes y las páginas son muy blancas algo que personalmente no me gusta. Este libro me gustó más que el 2 y no me lo esperaba.
