Question Quest (The Xanth Novels) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 94 ratings

A magician sends a melancholic maiden on a rescue mission in Hell in this humorous fantasy adventure by a New York Times–bestselling author.

As one of the trouble-making twins of Castle Zombie, Lacuna used to have so much fun when she was a little girl. But now at thirty-four, she’s bored stiff and wonders where her life went horribly wrong. To escape her funk, she heads to Good Magician Grey to pose a question. Of course, in Xanth, getting an answer is far from simple . . .

Grey sends Lacuna to Hell in a handbasket . . . literally. There, she meets Good Magician Humfrey, who’s spent the last ten years waiting to get his wife back from a terrible demon. With her magical talents—and a few gorgons—Lacuna just might be able to help Humfrey, escape Hell alive, and fix her boring life, once and for all.

Question Quest still gets five stars but if you are reading the Xanth books back-to-back this one is a bit repetitive. In all fairness to His Grace (Piers Anthony), fourteen years separate this book from the first in the series so he probably felt the need, at the time(1990), to refresh his audience with details from the earlier books. This book is kind of like a hamburger in that the bun represents the new story while the meat is a massive rehash of the first thirteen books. I love the new plot but it was burdensome reading a rehash of what I've been reading for the past few months. Of course, he wasn't writing this for folks like me who treat the story like one big book. He was helping people catch up with this mammoth world and its fascinating characters. I read a lot of good books in college and graduate school but NOTHING as fascinating or rewarding as the Xanth series (hence the five star review).

I really like how puns are used by the Author, "Piers Anthony". I love this series so much, I have purchased all the books of this series, as I have of, "Incarnations of Immortality". The Incarnations of Immortality" is the first book of that series, as of "Bearing an hourglass", "With a tangled skein", "Wielding a red sword", "Being a green mother. If you are into fantasy, and reading of literal puns, you should love this book.

This is by far the best book I ever read. If you haven't read any of the series you can still read this and have a blast. It's so fun.

I like how this story gives an account of the Good Magician Humphrys life before A Spell for Cameleon. It is a look into the mysterious magicians past and present life.

XANTH is a good fantasy series. Also, clean enough that teenagers can read it. Great for those who enjoy happy endings.

Stickers on the cover. Could have been on the spine. Poorly kept.

It is amazing how many trials you have to go through just to get an answer. I enjoyed the trip just like all the Xanth novels, there is no straight route just a lot of turns.

I do not like the author's lazy way of printing money by cobbling together the content of this book from those that have gone before. There are just enough new bits added to the history of Xanth to interest the most enthusiastic fan, but I feel very let down by this edition of an excellent series of books so far.
