Dueling Shoulder Angels (The Devil You Know Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 119 ratings

Selling his soul to the Devil was the best decision that Nick ever made.

He got the girl, saved the day, and settled in for a comfortable career at Devil Co. That means it’s the perfect time for God to have other plans for him– and guess who shows up to try and poach Nick for Their organization? Why have one complicated job working for a personified deity, when you can have two?

Caught between worlds, and moonlighting for the “good guys,” Nick learns his deal with Lucifer might not be what it seems. Uncovering a scheme to take advantage of the Devil himself rocks Nick to his core, and makes him question everything. The line between good and evil gets blurrier by the day, and Nick doesn’t know which shoulder angel to trust.

His partner Amy, a witch growing into powers of her own, warns him of the danger he faces, but can’t stop Nick from running headlong into it. Can Nick save himself, or will Amy need to make an ally of a former foe to save him from a fate worse than decaf?

About the Author

Ben Schenkman likes many things in life: his 20-pound Maine coon cat, his family, his coffee, and his eclectic hobbies—not necessarily in that order.

Ben also likes to play devil’s advocate in his books by exploring the gray areas of good and evil with questions like, “Does the end really justify the means? Or is it all simply black and white?” Ben leaves these questions lingering in the ether to challenge readers’ conventional thinking and delve into the complexities of moral dilemmas.

The Devil You Know Series

I love a good series, but I hate waiting for the next book if it ends on a cliffhanger. The first book stands on its own, intentionally.

I do my best to have each book in the series build on the last, but they each wrap up nicely without making you wait for the next to find out how it resolves.

  • Book One: My Boss is the Devil (December 28, 2023)
  • Book Two: Dueling Shoulder Angels (June 28, 2024)
  • Book Three: Too Many Gods in the Kitchen (October 15, 2024)
Three book covers

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The writing is smooth and well-paced, blending twisty turns, excitement, and humor. While it stands as a book to read by itself, I am positive you will want to read the first book in the series and then be waiting anxiously for the next book. Ben Schenkman has created another enjoyable read with funny characters and funnier dialogue." -Robin Ginther-Venneri, Robin's Review

Ben Schenkman likes many things in life: his 20-pound Maine coon cat, his family, his coffee, and his eclectic hobbies—not necessarily in that order.

Ben also likes to play devil’s advocate in his urban fantasy books by exploring the gray areas of good and evil with questions like, “Does the end really justify the means? As a native of Connecticut, Ben draws inspiration from his upbringing and college years in New Haven, where his novels take place. When he wants to escape being a writer, he’s a massive foodie who goes on gastronomic adventures, an overachiever who collects degrees in Theater, Nuclear Engineering, and an MBA, or the manager/performer of the fire dance troupe, HVBRIS—you know, the basics. No big deal.

Imagine this ….God and the Devil are personalities in the real world
This book is a compelling twist on the age-old rivalry between the forces of good and evil, between God and the Devil. Transforming these two huge identities that are the basis of numerous religions into physical beings is not an easy task as you can imagine. This shows the reader the depth of imagination and talent that is ascribed to this author. The dialogue among the book’s characters is also natural and flows smoothly without sounding forced. The editing and aesthetic quality of the ebook is also tastefully appealing. After reading this sequel, I am curious to know about Book 1, so I will be buying that as well. Great work!

The second book in The Devil you know series doubles down with Nick deciding that selling his soul to the Devil was the best decision he ever made. He not only saved the day and won the heart of Amy, but he has a pretty cushy job at Devil Co. That is until God decides he has plans for him. Working for one deity was bad enough, now he is working for two. The line between good and evil gets pretty blurry, making Nick wonder just who he can trust. His deal with Lucifer might not be what it seems, and he uncovers a plan to take advantage of the Devil. Will he throw himself into the pits of Hell or will Amy have to save him at her own peril?

Yes, I am off to buy book three. Just like an excellent cup of coffee, you can't stop at just one! Just a thought...does the author have a coffee donation link? We need him to write more.

This was a really good read. I enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the conclusion. I had a very difficult time putting it down. I also enjoyed the description of the place(s). Dueling Shoulder Angels was different! I never guessed where it would end.
I enjoyed this book. I will be reading the next, and more by this author.

Nick is stuck between 2 worlds.

Once upon a time it seemed easy to distinguish between good and bad... now it doesn't seem that way.

As the book goes on Nick heads straight into danger, can he come out alive? What side will he choose?

It's an exciting book, and if there is a part 3 I'm sure that will be just as fun to read!

Short review, but this is a fantastic sequel to Schenkman's debut.
It's cleaner, the characters are more well-defined, the world is more vibrant.
It's a fast-paced dream filled with tongue-in-cheek comedy, balanced incredibly well with gripping action and an attention to detail that demonstrates Schenkman's love of religion. I can't wait to read the third.

I'm disappointed because I really loved My Boss Is The Devil, but I feel as though it was just the same book. Characters 2 years later wash, rinse, repeat.

It was a good book, don't get me wrong, but I just kept feeling like we've been here before.

Things also felt a little tepid in comparison because things that were a HUGE, and detrimental to Nick in the first book just seemed to never come up again.

It's frustrating when a sequel feels like a retread of its predecessor. "My Boss Is The Devil" captivated me initially, but its follow-up left me feeling stuck in a loop—the same dynamics, just two years later. While still a decent read, the sense of déjà vu was inescapable. Moreover, pivotal issues that once significantly impacted Nick were oddly ignored this time around, diminishing the story's intensity and complexity. It's a letdown when a sequel doesn't evolve along with its characters.

I got the first book for free due to a short term kindle deal, I liked the premise and loved the book so it made sense to also get the sequel. This is as well written and enjoyable as the first with Nick's deal with the devil getting further complications. It's a trilogy and I understand the third book will be coming soon. Any one who enjoys metaphysical mysteries, comedies with cats and coffees and witches and a rollicking tale of good and evil should check out these books immediately. It's a cliche but as soon as I started these books I didn't want to read anything else until they were done. Can't wait for book three!
