- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025I've had the pleasure of knowing Larry for five years, and he has always stood out for his remarkable ability to make people feel at ease—even when tackling tough, thought-provoking questions. In fact, he is someone worthy of having a book written about him. When he first shared his vision of publishing a book that delves into the minds of top musicians—exploring how they reached their success, who and what inspired them, and the muses and role models who shaped their journeys—I was thrilled.
As a reader, you’ll feel like a part of these conversations, as if you’re sitting alongside Larry and his interviewees, gaining a rare glimpse into their world. The book is engaging, insightful, and valuable to both musicians and non-musicians alike. It goes beyond surface-level bios, offering a deeper understanding of these artists—their thoughts, personalities, and lives—giving you the chance to truly get to know them as people.
We are incredibly fortunate to live in a time alongside so many great musicians. However, without Larry’s initiative, future generations might never have the opportunity to gain such a deep understanding of their lives and minds. The insights in this book go far beyond what a typical biography or media interview could capture. For that, I am profoundly grateful to Larry for bringing this vision to life and preserving these invaluable conversations.

Intimate Conversations: Face to Face with Matchless Musicians is a treasure. If you are maven of great music, this book will put you in the company of incomparable artists and performances. And, if you are not yet familiar with virtuosos past and present, Intimate Conversations will escort you into their domain.
I can attest to the accessibility of this volume. Through the years, I have come to know Larry through our mutual baseball publications and enthusiasm for sport. However, Larry’s contagious passion for music and gift for sharing it makes this book a joy even for music “rookies.” The 21 interviews that provide the spine of the book truly are intimate conversations. Larry’s sincere interest and identification with music and its creators sets both interviewees and readers at ease, immersing them in revealing discourse about professional and personal matters.
Pick up a copy of Intimate Conversations and join the animated dialogue with fascinating composers, conductors, instrumentalists, vocal artists, and the inimitable President Emeritus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. After reading this populist masterpiece, you will find yourself nodding affirmatively to Larry’s paean: “music is life.”
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025Larry Ruttman’s Intimate Conversations is a masterful exploration of the lives and artistry of some of the most interesting musicians of our time. With his blend of curiosity, empathy, and storytelling finesse, Larry brings readers into close personal dialogues with these remarkable artists, capturing the essence of their musical journeys and the humanity behind their genius. This is his third book that I have read and his skill just gets better and better. He asks questions that I never would have thought to ask but are
so interesting that I can hardly wait to read the answers and the follow ups.
I became familiar with Larry’s unique skills when he interviewed me as the Town Moderator in his first book, Voices of Brookline.
Readers will walk away not only with a deeper appreciation for the artists themselves but also
for the transformative power of music in our lives. This is a must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025Some folks think of Robert Preston as the Music Man. I believe that title goes to Larry Ruttman!
Larry takes us by the hand and opens wide the doors to exceptional people. We become part of private and personal discussions that fill the soul that is hungry to know more about famous artists.
This is a beautifully laid out book that is a pleasure to contemplate as well as to read.
If music is important to you this collection of interviews will be essential.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025Intimate Conversations: Face to Face With Matchless Musicians, by Larry Ruttman, is a compilation of interviews with some of the most famous living classical musicians on the planet. How he got access to these celebrities I will never know, but the resulting interviews and details contained therein are absolutely fascinating, as well as impossible to find anywhere else.
Susan Graham, Charles Dutoit, composer Joan Tower, and Larry Lesser are among the more than twenty five musical stars Mr. Ruttman has interviewed. For High School and College musicians, and professionals alike, the book is unendingly interesting, and a resources that can be found nowhere else.
Mr Ruttman brings out anecdotes and insights from the musicans that are in turns homey, personal, professionally engaging, and, most of all, artistically inspiring.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2025The best book about music I have ever read. It's hard to believe that the author is a lawyer and not a professional musician or music critic. His knowledge of music and musical history is vast and varied and his approach to every interview individual, thoughtful and extremely personalized. Beautifully written book full of stories, anecdotes, Ruttman's wit emanating throughout the pages. Must read for every music lover!
Can't wait to read his next book, memoirs!
