Retirement Can Be Deadly (Retirement Can Be Murder Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 25 ratings

One of Peachtree Valley’s favorite persons, the town librarian, has been found murdered, but the victim’s grieving family doesn’t trust the new police chief to get to the bottom of this crime. The ink is barely dry on Helen’s PI license or the new Rogers, Adams, and Brown Private Investigations sign on her door, and already she’s had a high profile case land on her doorstep.

She and her associates are eager to dig into the details, but none of the clues are adding up to anything that makes a lick of sense. Even Dixie and Kirk, the newest additions to the team, find themselves hitting brick walls out in the field. That is, until they butt heads with members of a new church in town that turns out to be a cult in disguise.

Is this the missing piece to the puzzle they need to break open the case? The only way to find out is to beat the worshippers at their own game, a strategy that could bring Helen and her boyfriend Ted closer, or tear the entire firm apart.

2024 found me shifting gears. I wrote a romantic suspense, “Savannah Heat” which is decidedly spicier than my cozy series. My new 3 book series: book #1 titled, “Retirement Can Be Murder”, is set in small town Georgia where two bored women over 50 go a bit off script and decide retirement is not for them. This series will take Helen, Teddy and Carol from the safety of Sunny Days Retirement Village into the more dangerous lives of others when they open their own detective agency. As Helen literally trips over a dead body, or two, she and Carol are now in for more excitement than they had wanted. book 1 and 2 is out now, and #3 will follow in May***A Wedding and a Murder”….. and after a short rest I hope tackle a brand new series, 3 police officer retirees in their early 50s, Nicola, Melody, and Ginger, step into the world of cold cases.

Vickie Carroll’s Retirement Can Be Deadly (Book 2 in the Retirement Can Be Murder series) is a delightful, thrilling ride that proves retirement is anything but dull for Helen Rogers. After stumbling into solving her first murder, Helen finds herself on another dangerous, suspense-filled adventure in Peachtree Valley, where bodies seem to be dropping faster than she can keep up. With her quirky partner, Carol Adams, and the charming assistant, Ted Morgan, Helen steps into the role of an amateur investigator—and the stakes couldn’t be higher.

What I loved most about this book was Helen’s unexpected transformation from bored retiree to spirited detective. Carroll does a fantastic job of showing how Helen finds purpose and excitement in her life when she's forced into an investigation that feels like fate’s calling. Her relationship with Carol adds a refreshing, humorous dynamic to the story, as the two navigate the ups and downs of running a PI firm—something they never imagined themselves doing in their fifties. Their friendship and banter lighten the suspense, making their investigative journey even more enjoyable.

As the mystery unfolds, the twists and turns keep you guessing. The dead bodies pile up, each with new layers of intrigue, making it clear that someone in Peachtree Valley is hiding something dark. The mayor’s suspicious death and the tragic “accident” of his wife set the stage for an engaging whodunit, with Helen determined to crack the case. As she digs deeper, more secrets come to light, and the tension rises. I loved how the story kept me on edge, never quite revealing too much too soon—Carroll’s pacing and plotting had me hooked.

Helen’s evolving role as a detective is not just about solving crimes but about discovering her own strength and purpose in a life that, at first, seemed too quiet. There’s also a delightful mix of humor, particularly in Helen’s interactions with Ted, the handsome assistant who adds just the right touch of charm and mystery to the mix.

If you love cozy mysteries with a hint of suspense, clever protagonists, and a dash of humor, Retirement Can Be Deadly is a must-read. Vickie Carroll has crafted a perfect blend of quirky characters, small-town charm, and gripping mysteries, making this book an absolute page-turner. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Helen and Carol—Retirement Can Be Murder just got a whole lot more exciting!.

Book two in a series but stands well alone. In this story the newly minted detective agency Helen and her friends set up is in business and doing well. A little too well as they’re stretched thin. Ted is a new hire and has lots of contacts that lead to new cases. This book focuses on the death of the town’s librarian. While the police think it’s an accident her daughter hires Helen and co to solve the case. Quite a few surprises and a very unexpected twist make this mystery quite clever and captivating. I enjoyed this book and found the action much preferable to the prior story where there was so much about setting up the agency it got a bit dull. I like the fact that these are retirees who have embarked on a new and unexpected career path. Definitely a fun premise and an engaging story!.

I received an ARC copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Retirement Can Be Deadly is the second book in Vickie Carroll’s series Retirement Can Be Murder. I read the first book and really liked it. This second book takes place after the first ends but can be read as a standalone. The book is set in Peachtree Valley, Georgia and features Helen Rogers and her partners Elaine, Carol and Ted in the PI Company they established. As the book opens, they are trying to learn more about the murder of the town librarian. Ted has lots of contacts that he is able to use to discover what is happening. The deceased’s daughter contacts Helen to ask her firm to take the case. She doesn’t believe the police will do a good job. With Ted’s help they begin to find a lot of additional jobs. The original team is stretched too far and all agree to add additional staff. The two new employees add additional help and expertise.

As the team investigates the murder, they discover she was researching a cult when she was killed. The police have said her death was an accident but Helen and her group disagree. They discover that a cult has started to infiltrate their little town. It is affiliated with a church in Virginia. They see there is a building going up and have figured out some of the locals that are involved. They are buying up houses and have plans for a church. When they realize they could be in danger and the police can’t be trusted, they search for a reporter they learned had been working with the deceased librarian. As the mystery continues, Helen and Ted’s relationship also progresses.

This was a very enjoyable read with interesting characters. I’m glad the same people are in each book for continuity plus there’s additional characters introduced in book two. It was fun trying to solve the mystery with Helen and her team but sadly I never guessed correctly. Vickie has created a well written story that flows well and has surprises and suspense. I highly recommend this book and give it 5 stars.

Helen and her growing band of senior sleuths have kicked off their P.I. business and finally have a big case to solve. Someone has terminally checked out the librarian in Peachtree Valley and her daughter wants to find out who did it. Their investigation leads them to local church that happens to be a cult that ends up being the front for criminal organization. In the end, they figure it all out for their client. This is an interesting, cozy mystery with enough twists and turns to engage the reader but perhaps a little too heavy with the mundane parts.

I'm a member of the ARC team and have left an honest review voluntarily.
