- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2014I really like how puns are used by the Author, "Piers Anthony". I love this series so much, I have purchased all the books of this series, as I have of, "Incarnations of Immortality". The Incarnations of Immortality" is the first book of that series, as of "Bearing an hourglass", "With a tangled skein", "Wielding a red sword", "Being a green mother. If you are into fantasy, and reading of literal puns, you should love this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2013Good read. Sometimes these novels seem to go in wild directions that don't make a lot of sense(they make some sense, mind you, but they seem to drag a little) but this particular Xanth novel was very good. It was chalked full of mini-adventures that were all stories in themselves. I enjoyed it very much!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2013This was a nice story on many levels. We have a sympathetic protagonist in Cube, a homely young woman dreaming of love. Over the course of her adventures, she gains self-knowledge and understanding, the sort of character development that's been lacking in many of these later books. She does win her heart's desire in the end-- a handsome fellow no less--which finally gives plain Janes the satisfaction of seeing someone like them get the guy. The story follows Cube as she collects her companions and travels throughout Xanth, the moons of Ida, and into Mundania in search of the counter terrine territory won from Demoness Fornax. The overdone sexuality of previous books is refreshingly absent, although the puns seemed more numerous than ever, and we finally meet someone who was balked by Humphrey's challenges. There's a first!
So, if this story was so nice, why only three stars? The book lacked a truly compelling plot. Yes, we want Cube to find the love she yearns for, but her Quest doesn't read like a real adventure. There is no driving force to the story, no threat to avert, no urgency, no mystery, no adverse conditions, no issue to resolve. The Quest is mostly a string of encounters with various people, with only some of these meetings offering Cube important insights. The interference from Demoness Fornax is mild at best, never truly menacing. And the author makes a glaring blunder in his lesson about inner beauty--the object of Cube's affection professes his love only after he sees her beautiful. How much more powerful would this story have been if the man had gradually come to love Cube while she was still plain, if we could have seen a progressive attraction as he comes to appreciate her qualities? Even more, if the beauty that Cube finally attained had been the beauty that comes from self-confidence and radiant personality.
There's a lot to like in this book and I can see why other reviewers have rated it higher than I have. I just prefer a story with a greater sense of conflict, whether it occurs within the characters or outside of them.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2013Finally another piece to my collection of PIers Anthony. Normally I am not a science fiction/fantsy fan but this series got me going. Thanks again!
