Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach – it comes with a twist.

Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job.

It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions.

With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon.

Sunset Beach is a compelling ride, full of Mary Kay Andrews' signature wit, heart, and charm.

A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, she earned a B.A. in journalism from The University of Georgia (go Dawgs!). After a 14-year career working as a reporter at newspapers including The Savannah Morning News, The Marietta Journal, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where she spent the final ten years of her career, she left journalism in 1991 to write fiction.

Her first novel, Every Crooked Nanny, was published in 1992 by HarperCollins. She went on to write ten critically acclaimed mysteries, including the Callahan Garrity mystery series, under her real name, Kathy Hogan Trocheck. In 2002, she assumed the pen name Mary Kay Andrews with the publication of Savannah Blues. In 2006, Hissy Fit became her first New York Times bestseller, followed by dozens more New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestsellers. To date, her novels have been published in German, Italian, Polish, Slovenian, Hungarian, Dutch, Czech and Japanese.

She and her family divide their time between Atlanta and Tybee Island, GA, where they cook up new recipes in their restored beach homes, The Breeze Inn and Ebbtide—both named after fictional places in Mary Kay’s novels, and both available to rent through Tybee Vacation Rentals. In between cooking, spoiling her grandkids, and plotting her next novel, Mary Kay is an intrepid treasure hunter whose favorite pastime is junking and fixing up old houses.

Beach read meets mystery!

Beach read meets mystery!
Sunset Beach was one of my most anticipated releases of 2019 and it didn’t disappoint! I absolutely loved the beach read vibe mixed with a mystery...or two! The main character, Drue, has her life flipped upside down and she has to start over in a new city, with new friends, and an old beloved house. Her heart grows fond for a young client whose mother was killed and she, despite everyone telling her to leave it alone, wants to solve the case. With all these new people in her life and her trust issues, who can she turn to? Will it be the right choice or will she run into trouble?

Mary Kay Andrews is one of our absolute favorite authors here at Jessica’s Reading Room. She consistently writes wonderful novels and creates memorable and likable characters. I really enjoyed Sunset Beach, but I’ll also admit that it’s not my favorite of all her novels. It kept my attention, I was emotionally invested, and the ending surprised me. However, it just felt slightly shallower as compared to her other books. I love the romance component to each of her stories and this one seemed to be lacking that. There was some romance and I really liked Jonah a lot, I just needed more. My other issue was all the racial stuff she decided to throw in. Thankfully, she was very balanced, showing the problems on both sides of the “color spectrum”; I guess I just don’t understand why it had to be included at all. I really don’t think anything would have suffered had she not included such a focus on race. Other than that, the story was interesting, the mystery was solid, the characters were relatable and likable. And the cover of Sunset Beach is definitely one of my favorites of all the MKA books. It’s beautiful and totally appeals to a summer lover and beach bum like me! Definitely a good book that I would recommend for a great summer read!

It’s a great book, author, and cover!

I've been reading Mary Kay Andrews for quite awhile, and she never disappoints. Sunset Beach is her latest book, and it lives up to the standard she has set over the years. However, I want to say, this in not the light womn's fiction her summer books are, but a darker mystery type of novel. Just as good, but different!
Drue Campbell is at loose ends, having 1) severely injured her knee in a kiteboarding accident, 2) just buried her mother and 3) just lost her waitress job in the crummy dive bar by the beach. When her Dad, who she hasn't seen in 15 years, offers her a job in his law firm, and tells her that she is now the owner of the little beach cottage her grandparents owned, she reluctantly accepts it and moves to Sunset Beach.
As her job progresses, Drue stumbles upon a case that the firm handled as workers comp, that should have been, she believes, wrongful death. In addition to this, there is the police case file on a death from 1976, that turns up in the attic of her cottage. Drue comes to believe that both of these casses need to be looked into, in order for there to be justice for the victims. The book focuses on Drue's investigation into these two events, and along the way, the growth that ensues in Drue's character, as she realizes that everything is never as it seems on the surface.
Ms. Andrews has delivered yet another fast paced, and touching book about family, secrets and how life can change your outlook, even when you least expect it.

Update after finishing book. I added one star. I just didn't like the story. I grew up in St. Pete so to hear places I know well mentioned was kinda fun but I felt the main character was immature and shiftless even though she had so much potential. Not enough to make me stop reading MKA books but I don't like the direction.

I am going to try to finish reading this book. I have almost deleted it twice so far but because I have enjoyed so many MKA books in the past, I'm gonna give it one more shot. I am so disappointed in this and in MKA. It appears MKA has bowed to publisher and younger reader demands for smut and sensationalism. I find it very very difficult to accept that a 36 year old woman gets smashed her first night in town and sleeps with a fellow employee. I would expect that a 36 year old woman cares about herself and her job and her reputation more than needing a one off gratification. I don't need the crass, gutteral, descriptive phrases of female anatomy to keep me current or coming back to more books. Please go back to the fine author you were, MKA. I hope to come back and edit this review if I make it through.

The name of this is misleading. I was expecting a lighthearted, fun book to read and this was not it. The saying of “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here. I’m excited to read more Mary Kay Andrews in the future.

Blending humor, mystery and vivid Florida beach scenery, this is a page-turner, hard to put down. The heroine, (not-so-perfect, so you immediately love her) tries to restart her life after her mother’s death, and her own sports injury. She’s given a job working in her estranged father's big personal injury law firm. She becomes entangled in two murder investigations that have wild twists and surprises. Andrews entertains with great characters, funny, but very realistic life challenges and a beautiful, but surprising ending!

I almost didn't buy this book because I normally read cozy mysteries and this seemed more of a romance novel. As a few other reviewers commented, it took a few chapters to get into the book because Drue was pretty whiny, trying to punish her father and his new wife (a former friend of Drue's) for problems from years ago. However, once Drue settled in at her job at dad's law office and became interested in 2 old cases, the storyline picked up. Drue had to decide who to trust with her new evidence and worried that her father had been involved, if not in murder at least in covering up the truth. There were some unbelievable scenes, such as breaking into a hotel and leaving a gun in an unlocked house, almost begging the murderer to come after her. However, I did enjoy the solution to the mysteries and the development of the relationships between Drue, her father and her stepmother/ex-friend. The resolutions left me thinking about how the legal solution to a problem is not always the morally correct one - are there times when the end justifies the means?
