American Loyalist Troops 1775–84 (Men-at-Arms, 450) Paperback – September 23, 2008
Purchase options and add-ons
To mark the 450th book in the Men-at-Arms series we return to the subject of the very first book in the series, which was published nearly 35 years ago. Author of 27 other Men-at-Arms titles René Chartrand uses newly discovered material to offer a more modern analysis of the American Provincial Corps in this book, American Loyalist Troops. Packed with new photographs, completely new and up-to-date text and illustrations from Gerry Embleton (the much-loved illustrator of over 60 Osprey titles) this book examines the history of the American volunteers who fought on the side of King George in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).
In total something between 30,000 and 50,000 of these "Tories" served in dozens of units, on all fronts from Canada to Florida, and many regiments distinguished themselves in battle. After the final British defeat the survivors and their families withdrew, many into Canada, where they continued to provide a loyal militia to defend the Crown territory. This book will provide updated and comprehensive information on unit identities, commanders, strengths, areas of enlistment, combat record, tactics, uniforms and equipment.

"American Loyalist Troops 1775-84" is an Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book. Veteran historian Rene Chartrand does the honors as author; Gerry and Samuel Embleton provide the illustrations. This is a very short book, at less than 50 pages, but provides a concise introduction to the topic. The narrative includes a quick description of the conflict, a listing of the battles in which loyalist troops participated, and a surprising long compilation of the various units, including a brief paragraph or two on their service to the British Crown. What details may be available on their various uniforms are shared here, along with some well-done color plates, and photographs of some surviving uniforms. This book is too short to be comprehensive, but it is a fascinating read on a neglected aspect of the Revolutionary War. Recommended.
This short book, 48 pages, provided a good introduction, in a very basic outline format, to the American Loyalist. The artwork representing the various Loyalist uniforms is excellent and is typical of the Osprey titles.
I have always felt a degree of sympathy for the Loyalist, those English subjects who sided with the Crown during the American Revolution. Certainly they were on the wrong side of history but their motives and sincerity cannot be questioned. To speak the obvious all English subject were, in fact, Loyalist prior to the Declaration of Independence.
For readers who do not need addition information on the Loyalist this book should be sufficient.
From Canada to Florida the book describes the loyalist/provincial groups who fought with the British describing their organization, uniforms, leaders.
Many of these people were driven from Americas shores and much of Eastern Canada is where they ended up.

Also of interest is the illustration of the provincial troops' green coat uniform of 1777-78, which I plan to use as a guide for making my own.
Chartrand gives us some useful info on the material culture of the Loyalist troops. However, to be clear, most of the book consists of a "laundry list" of the many and varied provincial forces based in Canada, in the Colonies, and in the Caribbean and elsewhere. The list seems very complete, including well-known corps that had a real impact on the course of the war, and lesser-known corps that did not. Personally I appreciated this completeness. Other readers looking for details on very specific corps may not. Like most Osprey titles, this is a work for a generalist.
The colour plates are very well done, better, in my view, than several other Osprey titles that I own. I also appreciated the recognition of the role of African-Americans as fighting troops in the war.
