Maclay's book covers both the Revolution and the War of 1812. It is one of my favorite "Seafaring books". It is a bit more comprehensive, and more formal than Coggeshall's book, which is also good.

Good reprint of an rare title. Sure a must for everyone seriously researching the history of the american privateers. Worthwhile addition to Chapelles works on Baltimore Clippers. Short delivery time. Drawback: sometimes tiring to read because of fade printing

Maclay's historical perspective is within the chronological ambit of passing a credible, coherent, and relevant commentary on the state of the American armada as America passed through its sovereign adolescence in the 19th century.

Aside from being just excerpts from old documents with little insight provided, the format and character recognition are terrible.

Excellent reprint of original book with engaging true tales of American Privateers - especially War of 1812.

Product information show a recent publishing date on 2006, but do not show the copyright date, which is 1899. (you can see that on page 2 of book using the online reader).
That should not be a negative factor if considering buying. Have not read, but expect it to be hight informative, and highly footnoted by this hstorian aas he wrote the book.
American Privateers "took the war' to the British durign the War of Independence (American) and the War of 1812 - economically perhaps created a greater impac upon the British that the United States Navy during those wars.

Download the sample before buying this title. I don't mind paying five bucks for a quality ebook reproduction of a public domain work. But this one has a scan error in its very first word. The book begins with a "peeface," rather than a "preface." Not a good sign.

I bought this as a download as part of my family history research but was very disappointed to find the relevant page - describing a battle where my ancestor was killed - had somehow been missed out or skipped. I haven't read the whole book, so don't know if this has happened elsewhere, or if I am just uniquely unlucky!
