Martial Arts Manual: For Stretching, Strengthening, Prevention, and Treatment of Common Injuries Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

The purpose of this book is to promote training guidelines for active martial artists on stretching, strengthening, body mechanics and management of common injuries. The information is based on current medical knowledge of biomechanics, injury prevention and rehabilitation principles.

This book will answer the following questions:
1) Why and how do I properly stretch before class?
2) How can I modify my training to improve specific techniques?
3) How do I deal with common injuries?

A competent martial artist should have a basic understanding of the answers to these questions. This is especially true for instructors. Martial arts’ training is extremely physical, and without knowing the answers to the above questions advancement of physical abilities is limited.

The physical fitness aspects of martial arts are divided into four chapters which include:
1) General training principles: This explains the principles of the body's responses to physical activities related to martial arts training.
2) Warm-up and stretching exercises: Because a thorough warm-up is common in martial arts training, this section details a step-by-step warm-up and stretching routine. This includes an explanation of what muscle groups are being stretched and what kicking and punching techniques benefit the most from them.
3) Body mechanics: This specifies and explains proper body mechanics for basic karate techniques, as well as stretching and strengthening exercises to enhance each technique.
4) Injuries: This chapter spells out how to prevent and manage common injuries.

I purchased this book after watching Brads YouTube channel. I was mainly interested in learning how to stretch my legs to do splits and high kicks. This book looks geared for those into martial arts but has helped me for what I needed to learn. Thank you Brad for putting together a well thought out book!

Not only a good book with great advice from a martial arts point of view. He also has great advice as a Physical Therapist. Watch him on " Two Physical Therapist " on the YouTube channel.

This book is short and to the point. My biggest critique is that it needs to be updated. The author has a YouTube channel where he has posted updated stretching advice for martial artists that would be good to have included in this book.

I use this book to put together my post and pre-work out stretch routine. Already getting some benefits. I had to adjust a couple of stretches because I am still too tight for them (looking at you, "hurdler's stretch"). But still quite helpful.

I enjoyed reading this book, but it is way too short.

This book is short but it contains some useful insights to practice martial arts safely. I particularly like the section about training with injuries even though it doesn't mention the case of a torn meniscus. I will email the author about this.
