When young Steven Craig and his father receive a Letter of Marque from General Washingtonmaking them his privateers, they have no idea what becoming 'legal pirates' would lead them to.Vengeance and betrayal, murder, kidnappings, and camaraderie with friends for life would unfold as their determined misfit crew of maverick Jersey boys and men begin their career as Washington's pirates fighting to drive the British out.1782, The Paris peace talks drag on as thousands of patriot POW's are starved, tortured and annihilated in the British Hell ships in Brooklyn's Wallabout bay. The pompous British in New York City are livid and have no intentions of going home, so they elect the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, William as their murdering Headmaster.William detests his father for once interfering with the love of his life, and turns traitor- devising a terror plot against the patriot Americans. Receiving money from King George, William underhandedly hires cold-blooded killers out of uniform paying them with orders to-murder, rape, even hang and burn patriot women and their families alive (do anything to create terror among them) with intentions of re-opening the war and ending the Paris talks. And they nearly succeed-But Washington is furious when he discovers their plot, vowing to take an eye for an eye, and sends a secret message to his privateers with his personal orders-burn, capture, or sink any British ships in our waters. 'Give them hell boys- starve them out of New York City, take their ships from the Caribbean with supplies coming up the coast- nip and rip away at their blockade in Sandy Hook- rid us of the bastards!'

American revolution with high sea adventure on the Barnegat Bay. How these pirates played an important role in ousting the Redcoats.

A fun book about an exciting time in history. Well written, would recommend it to anyone interested in historical fiction of the Revolutionary time period.

The battle scenes at sea are the best! What a fun read as you follow the adventures of our east coast patriots, a bunch of boys and men who know nothing about sailing and cannons but eventually turn themselves into hired pirates doing everything they can to get the British to pack off. If you like sea stories, pirates and don't mind blood and guts, you're going to love these books about our American privateers.

I read this two book series, start to finish, in three nights! The story is built into real history with a lovable crew of misfit jersey boys and men who have no clue what they are doing as they take to the sea in a stolen ship from the British and turn their cannons on the enemy. Bloody decks, vengeance, kidnappings and murder follow them as they weave their way through history.

Both books are great! Vengeance, patriotism, murder, betrayal and thwarted love all wrapped up in one great historical story. You will fall in love with this reckless crew of misfits. I enjoyed Scotchman-croats the most, and his little buddy Pups. As the giant bearded ‘Scroats’ wields his saber carving up the British on deck, but always protecting his best friend and fellow privateers as they fight for their freedom.

Ordered this for my brother, he read it in less than a week. Money well spent. If you love history and want to disappear into an era, this is the book for you.
