INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a Notable Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post

From award-winning actor and food obsessiveStanley Tucci comes an intimate and charming memoir of life in and out of the kitchen.

Stanley Tucci grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the kitchen table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in
The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the savory recipes and into the compelling stories behind them.

Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up in Westchester, New York; preparing for and shooting the foodie films Big Night and Julie & Julia; falling in love over dinner; and teaming up with his wife to create meals for a multitude of children. Each morsel of this gastronomic journey through good times and bad, five-star meals and burned dishes, is as heartfelt and delicious as the last.

Written with Stanley’s signature wry humor,
Taste is for fans of Bill Buford, Gabrielle Hamilton, and Ruth Reichl—and anyone who knows the power of a home-cooked meal.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Through food and scenes of family life, Stanley Tucci shares both his personal story and his celebration of all-things taste. With tales from peanut butter sandwiches to lobster in Maine, with recipes from the perfect Negroni to his wife’s roast potatoes, he draws us to his table. Come hungry for the food, the cocktails, the gossip and the fun. Just never, ever, cut up your spaghetti." –Yotam Ottolenghi

"An instant classic, Stanley Tucci's TASTE is as captivating, simple, charming and insanely moreish as the best Italian food. Take it to bed with you and you will fall asleep dreaming you're in Italy. But take it to the kitchen and you will find yourself using it as often as a pan or a peeler."
–Stephen Fry

"A delicious story of appetite, family and pasta. A serious amount of pasta. In this gloriously written memoir, the ever tasteful Stanley Tucci invites us to his table and feeds us all the good stuff."
–Jay Rayner

"It’s impossible to read this without becoming ravenous!”
–Nigella Lawson

"Our relationship with fire and food has shaped us as human beings, it connects us in a unique way, to ourselves, the people we love and this beautiful planet we live on. It is a wonderful story of and told by a wonderful man through his food memories. It is as infectious as it is delicious, as funny as it is insightful. The only reason to put this book down, is to go cook and eat from it.”
Heston Blumenthal

"Funny, heart-breaking, fascinating, intimate and beautifully-written.”
–Kate Mosse

"This superb book…
Taste enriches the reader and establishes Tucci as one of the wisest and most generous personalities of our time." — Roger Lewis, Daily Mail

"The man, the myth, The Devil Wears Prada legend Stanley Tucci has blessed our hungry souls with a food memoir to feed our mounting appetite for the actor and cook’s wit, warmth and, let’s face it: tight polo shirts. He divulges some of his most treasured memories and stories behind favourite recipes — prepare to feel bereaved when it’s over."
—Joanna Taylor, Evening Standard

"Reading this book will make you more attentive to the glorious — or modest — food on your table, and to the people with whom you are privileged to share it."
--Jennifer Reese, The Washington Post

"Like the enormous layered pasta pie that starred in the 1996 movie
Big Night, Stanley Tucci’s new memoir is a gastronome’s delight." --Bookpage

"Tucci is not only a prolific actor and writer, but his zest for food, travel, culture, and life is contagious."
—Edith G. Tolchin, New York Journal of Books

Tucci, S. (2021). Taste: My life through food. Gallery Books.Stanley Tucci is an actor and a filmmaker. He brought his love of food in the series Searching for Italy where he took viewers on a food tour of Italy.I tend to like books that talk about food and Stanley Tucci's memoir was wonderful. His description of pasta left my mouth watering to the point that I made spaghetti that very night. He begins by talking about his mother's love of food: "there was a daily, almost obsessive focus on the quality of the ingredients, their careful preparation the passing on of family recipes, and cultural and culinary traditions." Weaving stories, recipes, and descriptions of food experiences and traditions we learn about Tucci as a young man, actor, and family man. We also learn about his values. For example, his mother exhorted, "You can't know if you don't like something if you haven't had it. You have to try it. You have to try everything." He described food as "connective tissue" bringing people together. Tucci noted, "if you're a food lover, there is always something gratifying about connecting with the vegetable, the fruit, or whatever animal, whether you've grown it, raised it, or hunted it, before it becomes your food. But to make that connection and then connect with someone else simultaneously is an exalted, almost spiritual level of foodie intimacy." He reserved his experience of throat cancer until the chapter. It was as though, the prior chapters were the prelude to fully understanding how threatening oropharyngeal cancer would be to a man who clearly loves food. His diagnosis meant that for almost two years, he primarily ate easy to swallow foods. Reflecting, he said: "Food at once grounded me and took me to other places. It comforted me and challenged me. It was part of the fabric that made up my creative self and my domestic self."This would be a wonderful book to discussion food culture, the sociology of food, and hospitality - food as a weaver of the social fabric.

It felt like I was part of Stanley Tucci’s family. I bought one for a friend whose recently deceased husband was a true Italian from Verona and so many parts of Mr Tucci’s story reminded me of him.

As a great fan of Mr. Gucci, this book did not disappoint. Engaged me in chapter 1. Felt like I’m back home in my grandmothers kitchen. Generational references are hilarious - I was laughing out loud!

The book is great. Stanley Tucci is erudite, funny, urbane and very well-traveled. He's also elitist as hell and a major name dropper. If you can get past that, this book is very entertaining. That said, for an avid home cook like me, the recipes disappoint. I don't think they were edited for "make-ability." Ingredients are annoyingly written in ounces and pints, so a lot of conversion math is required. I was so excited to make the Parmigiano Cheese Stock and use it in the Ragout alla Bolognese. The stock recipe calls for 7 ounces of coarse salt. That's 14 tablespoons. I spent $20.00 bucks on parm rinds for the stock and $12.00 on the porcini mushrooms for the ragout. The ragout calls for 1 oz of chopped aromatic herbs (rosemary, thyme, sage). That's 8 tablespoons of very strong herbs. I decided to trust the recipe. BIG mistake. Long story short, I had to throw the ragout out. It was so salty it was inedible. The herbs made it bitter. I tried every trick in the book to fix it and nothing worked. Not the adding of liquid, not the adding of dairy. Not even putting in potato to absorb the salt. Nothing. So...buy it for the stories. Do not buy it for the recipes. I, for one, will not be making anything else from that book. Huh-uh. Nope. No.

What an excellent autobiography!
I listened to Stanley, himself, read the book toe on Audible and it was truly a treat.
Stanley has a rich past - filled with travel, food, and famous faces.
He is a natural storyteller and just your average good human.
I love that he includes recipes throughout.
He spoke at length about his film Big Night, which made me want to watch it for the first time ever. It's old enough now that I was astounded to see Stanley with hair!
Really good film though, and it incorporates a lot of Stanley's upbringing in an Italian family.
All hail the timpano!
