Hi! I’m Christopher Kennedy. I’m privileged to serve as Senior Pastor at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, School, and Child Care in San Antonio, Texas. I’ve been there since 2008.

I’m a graduate of Concordia University Texas (Bachelor of Arts in Communication), Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (Master of Divinity), and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary (Doctor of Ministry).

Chris Kennedy skillfully marries theological depth with accessible practicality. The words of Jesus often leave us pondering – even those of us who claim to be familiar with the Lord and His teaching. With a heart for everyday people, Chris answers many of the most difficult questions readers encounter in the Gospels.

For example, in my favorite chapter Chris illuminates Jesus’ teaching on faith that moves mountains. His simple explanation of hyperbole is typical of the way Chris makes a big idea easy to understand: “Hyperbole uses an impossible illustration to make an unforgettable point. Hyperbole is not to be taken literally. It is meant to be taken seriously.” Following this, he brilliantly draws the reader's attention to the mountain of sin that Jesus removed for us by His work on the cross - the most incredible gift received by faith.

Like having coffee with a dear friend and pastor, this book delivers insights and wisdom spun together with conversational style and skillful storytelling. It is well worth the read.

Even though many things in the Bible are very clear, there are some things that Jesus said that are hard to take. They make us shake our heads and say, "What?!! Did Jesus really say that? If so, what did He mean because that certainly sounds like the opposite of what He said and taught? It seems so out of character." In his clear and easy-to-understand way of writing, Pastor Kennedy shows that Jesus was not "out of character" with what He said. Instead, he shows how Jesus used these dramatic ways of speaking to teach the eternal truths of everything God says in His Word. You will find yourself not wanting to put this book down once you begin. However, it can be used in a devotional way by reading one chapter and then using the questions at the end of the chapter to meditate further on what Jesus said. "Jesus Said What?" is a wonderful resource when people ask you about some of the things Jesus said.

Have you ever read some of Jesus’ words which left you scratching your head afterwards? This book takes some of the most challenging statements from Jesus and breaks them down in such a way that’s relatable and easy to understand. A great read examining some age old questions for teachings that may have made you say, “HUH?!”. I’d say this read can be enjoyed by the discerning soul and the ‘mature’ faith, alike. Another fantastic work from Pastor Chris Kennedy (check out his other stuff, too!)

Jesus used various methods in His teaching, and sometimes His statements had shock value. If we look at that one statement only, we might question what Jesus said. However, Pastor Kennedy points out that we need to study God's word and see what else He has to say on various subjects. Above all, God must come first in our lives.

The discussion statements at the end of each chapter reinforce the learning in the chapter. I think this book would be a good one for group Bible study.

Some of the things Jesus says in the Gospels are simple and easy to understand. Others, though, can be real head scratchers. Pastor Kennedy takes a number of those passages and explains them in a way that is clear and concise. He does a fantastic job taking those challenging, sometimes seemingly offensive declarations, and showing how they point us to the gospel and God's love for his people. It's a book that could be a big help to pastors teach their people, but is really aimed at anyone who is just curious about what exactly Jesus meant when he said the things he said. I'd recommend it for personal reading, but the discussion questions at the end of each chapter make it perfect use in a small-group setting.

It is easy to find words of Jesus' comfort and grace in memes, sermon billboards, t-shirts, and coffee cups! However, these are only part of the full message Jesus conveyed while on this earth. To get the full picture, it is necessary to understand his hard truths along with his grace. This book provides an insightful, easy-to-read approach to the many truths spoken by our Lord. I especially like the easy-to-navigate Table of Contents so that I can quickly flip to the truth that applies to my current "life moment"! I highly recommend it for any Christian's library, or better yet, for anyone's library who is seeking answers to some of life's hard questions.
