KB's History of Starrcade Kindle Edition

3.5 3.5 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Beginning in 1983 and running for the next 18 years, Starrcade was the flagship show of the National Wrestling Alliance and later World Championship Wrestling. These shows could range anywhere from all time masterpieces to shows that you could only shake your head at, but quality aside, the show almost always felt big. In this new book, Thomas Hall takes a look at every match, story, angle and segment from the Granddaddy of Them All while breaking each show down and analyzing why the shows either hit or miss.

Very well written review of everything that ever happened during every Starrcade event. A great time capsule to a time period in wrestling that many of us miss.

I enjoyed the look back at the history of Starrcade, but several things jumped out at me. The author watched commercial video's of the events, and thus left out a few matches that happened, such as Denny Brown defending the NWA Jr. Heavyweight Title against Rocky King. Second the author was not familiar with the territory, especially during the mid-80's, so he could not quite understand the fans interest in some of the match ups as he did not have the person connection with the wrestlers like they did. I understand that Ron Garvin, Jimmy Valiant and other may not register to today's fans who have only grown up on "entertainers" who need to fit 100 high spots into a five minute match, but these men sold tickets.

This book is an interesting read, but any wrestling fan would know the history of Starrcade. This is a pretty good read though.

If you grow up on sports entertainment : entrance themes with fireworks, then high spot, high spot, false finish, repeat. You definitely have no business "reviewing" a card like Starcade 1983. The reviewer talks about how no one is a "name" wrestler, and criticizes the fact that no one has "entrances". Gives every match a C or a D,except for the main event which is a classic (or so he is told). If you asked any fan there, they would have said it was the best card they'd ever seen. You can't review something if you don't understand or appreciate what the product was in a particular era. The writer probably thinks Casablanca is a 1 out of 10. " Ugh, its black & white, and boring. There aren't any special effects. And the soundtrack? Its just some no-name guy at a piano.. Just horrible."
This book gets 1 star, (zero for anything before the 1990s), just for the effort he took to type out this book. Stick with what you knoiw, chum.

5.0 out of 5 stars KB's books are always excellent and this is no exception

A really good recap of the "Grand daddy of 'em all". Starting in 1983 with Flair vs Race and continuing through the highs and lows until we get to Starrcade 2000 and a WCW on the brink of death. It's a great way to watch the ebbs and flows of JCP/WCW as Starrcade was the one constant and serves as the company's time capsule.

KB's books are always excellent and this is no exception.

3.0 out of 5 stars As a reference guide it is OK

Sorry, but if you are going to write a historical book, have some idea of the characters.

Stil, as a reference book, it's fine and it wasn't expensive.
