Kid-friendly, illustrated primer on the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Jennie Turrell walked into All Saints’ Chapel on Good Friday, when her three-year-old son stopped her in the darkened doorway and quietly whispered, “Uh-oh.” At that moment, she realized that changes in the physical space of the liturgy mattered to him. She had been whispering in his ear during liturgies since he was a baby, but it wasn’t until that day that she knew he had been taking it all in―sights and sounds―all of it. In spite of squawking at inopportune times, crawling in the side aisle or narthex when sermons ran too long, drawing on the bulletin, dropping the heavy Book of Common Prayer on his toes, or standing on chairs, her son was present, aware, and sharing in the Eucharist.

This is how her little book for little hands came to life. Her son was a “consultant” on the book from beginning to end. An engaging book for children, ages 2 – 8, to follow the liturgy and participate in ways that are appropriate for them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Jennie Turrell addresses an imperative in the Church’s ministry to children. For the meaning of baptism to be fully claimed in the life of the Church, the giving of Communion to baptized infants and children is a pastoral priority which has gradually become a normal practice in many Episcopal parishes in the last few decades. But often this experience of the sharing of Communion has not benefited from a complementary engagement with those children’s imaginations. Turrell’s Let Us Pray is an important response to this need. It will enable even young children to experience Communion at their level of understanding and to place them on the path to eucharistic living.”
―Louis Weil, James F. Hodges and Harold and Rita Haynes Professor Emeritus of Liturgics at CDSP

“During the baptismal rite, the members of the congregation promise to do all they can to support the candidates for baptism in their life in Christ. Jennie Turrell has responded to this call by creating this fun and important worship aid for children. We know that worship is the gathering of all of God’s people. With this book, welcome and integration is all the more possible for the littlest ones in our midst.”
―Roger Hutchison, author of
The Painting Table

“Two of the gifts we can offer one another in a Christian community are honest story sharing and meaningful ritual and connection. Let Us Pray offers an engaging and insightful way to draw children and their families closer to our common story of God’s redeeming love found in the Eucharist. This lively and engaging resource can be used in a variety of different formational settings―home, worship, learning communities, and beyond.”
―Emily Given, Director, Children and Family Ministries Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Dallas, Texas

"Listen and look. Sing and Pray. What's the lesson of the day?" invites children to listen to the Lectionary and participate in the Eucharist. LET US PRAY, with step by step illustrations of the liturgy, incorporates the Episcopal Eucharistic service matched with child friendly verse explaining each aspect of the service. An excellent resource for families with small children, godparents, and Welcoming Committees to offer to children to use during the services. Pictures incorporate sheep as members of the congregation and in the service, reinforcing the story of the Good Shepherd.

completely faithful to the Book of Common Prayer, Sweetly (not sugary) illustrated and very manageable for a wide variety of ages. Doesn't dumb down the material. I would have liked included the common breaks for hymn singing or other music, but in the procession it does include a choir. Very nice resource for children in the pew, or home instruction. Affordable and appealing.

Love this book! Unfortunately for Pentecost we use Eucharist prayer a, so for most of the year the prayers don’t line up! Would love it if y’all made another edition with liturgy for prayer a in it!

Ordered this for a grandchild, and I think it’s lovely - baffled by criticism of the illustrations. They’re sheep. Lambs. All colors. No, it’s not Disneyfied and they don’t look like stuffed animals. Chill out, people.

I have worked in children's ministry for over 40 years in 8 Episcopal parishes in 6 dioceses, taught all aged children, youth, and adults, reviewed and designed curriculum, and trained teachers for over 40 years, and continue to do so. As part of this ministry, I have prepared many children youth, and adults for baptism, communion, and confirmation using numerous commercially printed and locally designed books, booklets, and curricula. I expected to like this book, but did not because I found the illustrations creepy and frightening, as did another priest with whom I work who has similar background to mine. We both felt the illustrations would give some young children nightmares, as well as skew their attitude to the Eucharist.  Let Us Pray: A Little Kid's Guide to the Eucharist  (The Rev.) Excellent book for children who can read. The sheep in the book are wonderful, especially for children taught in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. In Catechesis we learn that we are the sheep and Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd, which makes the book very understandable for young people.

It's beautiful! Sweet sheep for little people to enjoy, with expressions that big people will recognize. Similarly, the liturgy is explained for a child's understanding, but it is not changed--adults will find the power and the grace of the Eucharist service undiminished.

This wasn't what I was expecting. It's a reprinting of Holy Eucharist Rite Two in picture book format. The "age appropriate language to follow the liturgy" consists of very words, sprinkled throughout, and doesn't really offer enough in the way of explanation. For example, The text to go along with Holy Communion is one line "As we walk up to receive; think about what we believe." It's a picture book, and in that it's child-friendly and might offer a spring board for the parent to offer more explanation, but it's not a teaching tool in my opinion.
