This book provides some history about beer brewing before, during and after prohibition. Most of that information reads like a Wikipedia entry and much of the quoted historian testimonials really should have been edited as they read really poorly.
Overall this book provides a good overview of the handful of places I decided I was interested in.
But the overall layout of the book is awkward and there are reference chapters that literally list the breweries with the related websites to look up.
All-in-all I wouldn’t recommend purchasing this book. You can use Yelp, Wiki and Google to find the same information in much the same format.
Longtime friends Michael McCarty and Kristin DeMarr have presented an interesting and informative narrative that includes the history and how-to of beer making, the pioneers of the craft, current day Quad Cities (Illinois-Iowa) breweries, and even a trip back in time to the days of Prohibition and how that affected the economy.
Even if you are not a resident of this region of the USA or are not a beer aficionado, you will find plenty of jaw-dropping tidbits from our collective past that will keep you reading. Additionally, McCarty and DeMarr’s sprinklings of humor in the narrative keep the mood of this book light. Written in an easygoing, non-academic voice, this descriptive tome is an easy read worth a permanent spot on one’s bookshelf.
