This is the story of two women in Western China in the 1990s, on the edge of the Gobi Desert, near the site of the ancient Silk Road. Bound together by both poverty and tradition, they embark upon a perilous journey to change their lives. In Into the Desert, acclaimed Chinese author Xuemo has recreated a bygone village in Gansu province in Western China, a place where camels are as common as automobiles and potatoes replace rice. With his discerning eye for desert landscape, a fine ear for colorful local expressions, and an acute sensitivity to the inner world of his characters, the reader is led on a fantastic journey where hope and tragedy go hand in hand, and where centuries of tradition both suppress and compel the forces of change. Translated from the Chinese by Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin, whose previous work includes numerous works of fiction by popular Chinese writers, Into the Desert is certain to ignite interest in Xuemo's works in the English language.

Interesting book
I alway loved learning about Chinese history so I decided to look for a book that gave me history but was still a novel. This book was interesting to read as I didn’t know what it was really like back in the 90’s. I have friends that came from there but they never mention how difficult it was. It was an interesting read to say the least.

If you want to know more about desert, In to the desert is a must read. If you want to know more about the women in West China, it’s even more worth reading.

A friend introduced this newly published award winning novel to me because I loved the Western China.
I traveled there several times, by foot, by bus, by train and by airplane. Not like the Eastern China which is a part of the East Asia, the Western China, largely deserts, is a part of the Central Asia, like Afghanistan. It was so historically important, culturally rich yet locals were in extreme poverty. Little has been changed until the 21st century.
I felt so real while I was reading the text. The old scene and familiar smell just pops up in my mind. If you want to read another side of the stories of China, and the struggle of many modern normal Chinese people, this is a good book.

The book was hard to put down as it gives the reader an understanding of the struggles, hardships, and challenges faced by two poor women living in a poor village. On their journey to the salt lake they faced and overcame hunger and death. At the salt lake they labored in extreme heat and dealt with many problems which each of them coped with in a different way. Overall, I learned a great deal about the old traditions and practices of a poor village in China during a time of great change for the characters and country!

I haven't finished reading this book yet, but it is so beautifully written that it takes my breath away. It is the winner of 2024 Independent Press Award for literary fiction. That is how I found out about this book. Highly recommended.

Wonderful book! To understand this legend is to understand real China, to understand human nature, and even to understand humanity. This story tells us that as long as we stand up for ourselves and do not fall, no matter how many fierce beasts we face, we will go out, we will overcome bad luck, we will go to our dreams, to the poetry and prosperous future of each of us.
