I swear by this book ever since I got my first yorkie. Now that I breed yorkies I give every new client this book for free when they pickup their new puppy. This book is so very informative that any questions a person might have can be answered by looking in this book.

I have read and enjoyed a few "For Dummies" books in the past and this one has the same easy to read quality. When I got my shih tzu puppy 5 years ago, I read "Shih Tzus for Dummies" and it was a tremendous help. I would have to say that it was much more thorough than this one, though. Much of the information was the same, which is fine, but when it came to the details I was hoping for, I found it to be lacking. I had great success using the suggested training methods in the shih tzu book, so I will be revisiting those techniques to refresh my memory. I would recommend this book, but also suggest that you read more than just this one when prepping for your yorkie puppy. Like any book that has training methods, it has guidelines that may/may not work based on what the dog responds to and what the owner feels comfortable with. Little things like making your dog sit before she/he gets their meal is very basic and effective, but other highlighted techniques seem questionable. I, personally, don't feel like tethering my dog to me (literally) so that she has to follow me around the house is a good idea. I do, however, believe that the positive reinforcement style is the best one that you can use when training your dog. The section on housebreaking and trick training is quite thin (this is where I was hoping for more content). Since yorkies are commonly regarded as hard to housebreak and a little stubborn, I thought there would be some breed-specific tips. It did mention that a shih tzu is harder to train so maybe--comparably--I don't have much to worry about. :o)

I've never had an indoor pet before, and purchased this book in time for the arrival of my new Yorkie puppy. It has proven to be invaluable! I've gotten so much advice from friends with puppies, but always turn to this book before acting on it. Funny how much unsolicited advice is incorrect! Love having this as a guide to the history of yorkies and house training that seems specific to this breed. It definitely mentions lots of things I never would have thought of without it. The book has a little humor and makes for good reading! I don't plan on breeding or showing my dog, and it was easy to skip these particular chapters. All the things I need to know can be quickly located. Loved this book & continue to use it as a handbook for these first few weeks.

My wife and I have never owned a dog. For Christmas, my kids begged and pleaded. My wife and I gave in. My wife researched small/toy dogs and discovered the Yorkie. This book was a lifesaver. Very accessible. Great resource. We would have been lost without it.

Incidentally, we bought another book as well--published by Animal Planet. Not nearly as helpful, but my nine-year-old enjoyed the pictures and general information.

If there is a better book for first-timers, I would be surprised. Good luck with your Yorkie.

This book was a God send. I'd highly suggest buying it and reading it from cover to cover before bringing your little Yorkie home. The book is an easy read and because of the format, you can skip to what's important to you and read the rest at a later time. We bought our little puppy from the breeder when he was a mere 6 weeks unlike the standard 12 weeks, which I was actually a little nervous about. However, the book was right on the money with instructions on what to expect when picking him up from the breeder to his very first night in his new home. We just recently took the little guy to his first appointment with the vet. That too is covered in the book! The vet was impressed with how much I knew about the breed and puppies in general. I have this book to thank for that. I really would have been lost without it.

Bought this for my Aunt and Uncle. They got a 6 week old Yorki. They are learning a lot about their new puppy thanks to this book. They get very excited telling me about what the book says. I'm glad they are getting a better understanding as to the personality traits of their new puppy as well as how to take care of it. The Yorki is training them well. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A good resource for new Yorkie owners or people thinking about getting a Yorkie
Reviewed in Canada on August 7, 2014
I already knew a great deal about Yorkshire Terriers having had mine for over 12 years now. I purchased this book for my daughter who will soon be getting a Yorkie puppy. I did read through the book myself before passing it on to my daughter. The book is easy to read, it is well written, and it's full of great information. I even learned a few new things, like not giving your Yorkie puppy too much space to sleep in or else she may use some of it as her potty... in other words don't take your new puppy to bed with you or you may wake up with a warm, wet spot down at the foot of your bed. This also applies to the pet carrier you may opt to crate your puppy in... if it's too big the puppy will use part of it as her potty and this defeats the purpose of using the carrier as a house training tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book all about yorkies

I really liked this book, it has a very dog friendly attitude, whoever wrote it must adore these dogs. It has all the information you're looking for about Yorkies. The only thing is that it has a lot of information for people living in the USA, like the kennel club there, etc, but it's a great book. I ended up getting a papillon, but still was able to use it as a reference book.
