A well written, fantastically illustrated piece of gaming history
This is a beautiful book that pays tribute to one of my favorite game developer/publishers. 200+ characters spanning their entire catalog of games. It's more than just an art book, though as each page has a nice bio on the character(and sometimes full cast!) including any other alias they go by and much more! This is definitely a great hard cover table top book to glance through and also a fantastic point of reference for my work as well!Recommended!

I confess: I like lists of things, and when it comes to character encyclopedias, I love them. I have character encyclopedias for the Marvel and DC universe, as well as specialized ones for various superhero teams. I have character encyclopedias for Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Outlaws of the Marsh, and they're great, because there are so many names in each of those works.

So now, I also have Capcom's character encyclopedia. First, it seems that Capcom had one of these published 5 years back for its 25th anniversary. If you have that, I don't know that I would purchase this one. While there are new entries, they're pretty weak overall (I particularly like the entries for "Arisen" and "Dragon" from Dragon's Dogma - both of those characters have less personality than, say, Black Tiger).

So, first, a few things about the specifics of the book. The book itself has a nice textbook-type hardcover, and around 200 full-color pages, each with a name of a character, some specifics, a graphic image, and a box summarizing his or her place in the Capcom universe. The pages are also glossy. The entire book cost me around ten buck on Amazon (with free shipping from Prime). Put that way, you are getting a fully-illustrated hardcover book for roughly five cents per page. That's pretty darn good value.

The write-ups are not bad at all. At times, they are actually pretty funny. I have no doubt that a google search would yield much of the information, but it's still nice to see the alternative names. Sometimes there is some subtle commentary on the games in question (I particularly like the mention of Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter, which I utterly loathed as a game). The character selection is vast - I had not even heard of many of the characters appearing in the encyclopedia.

If I had one small gripe, some of the artwork is lacking. I was particularly disappointed in the image of Morrigan used for the book (and the Darkstalkers characters in general were somewhat lacking overall). Many of the images are pretty stock, but some are pretty unique, so it's really a matter of taste. But for the cost, it's hard to go wrong.

I have enjoyed brief backgrounds of the characters who's names I know and stories I didn't. It isn't a database of every detail of every character, but does a great job describing a wide variety of characters without trailing off into too much detail. Some entries have witty remarks and sarcasms where the character simply doesn't have much of a story to offer, and it's very entertaining.
The book came in a sturdy hard cover and the pages where filled with bright illustrations so there was no mistaking which Ryu you are reading about.

Over the past 30 years Capcom has created many very memorable characters. As with any game company, there have also been many very mundane, filler characters. This encyclopedia covers pretty much any Capcom character you can think of, from the exceptional (Mega Man, Ryu) to the forgettable(Maki from FF2 and many that I can't remember). When the book finally arrived I was surprised as to how small it was. The book is not much larger in size than your standard strategy guide (except that it is hardcover).

The main problem with this book is that it is not what you would expect an encyclopedia to be. Each character is represented by a single page and then 2 or 3 paragraphs. There is a small section on each character page that tells you where you may have first seen the character as well as where you may have seen them most recently, but that is it when it comes to facts or data. The content is equally split between the famous and vanilla characters (1 page each). It is strange to see a single page devoted to a Capcom superstar like Chun-Li or Wesker sitting next to some character from a minor game from ages ago that you've probably never heard of. The issue isn't that these minor characters are included, but rather that there should be more information and details when it comes to characters who have been in more games and have much richer stories and legacies. If you were hoping to find your favorite character and find a trove of trivia, statistics, or even a list of each title they appear in...you are out of luck.

The above complaint is probably to be expected considering the breadth of the subject (there are a LOT of characters in this book). If this were a paperback copy at the same price this would be a 3 star book at best. Instead of a paperback book, though, the finished product is a very presentable hardcover book. The illustrations are very vibrant and high quality. It is a perfect coffee table book where you could easily flip through a few pages and read up on some of the good and not-so-good Capcom characters created over the past 30 years. I would have liked more content, but for the price there really are no substitutes at this time. 4 Stars.

This is an encyclopedia, so think reference if you will. Each entry is one page. There are almost 200 characters in the book. DK has done a good job on this guide, which I have a feeling was a Japanese release that was translated. The reason? Well the book does include at least a dozen or more Capcom characters which were in Japanese only games.

But for what you pay for this is a good value. You have a brief bio of each character, the game they first appeared in, and a few other tidbits. Each entry also has a picture, typically of the hand drawn character before they were digitized. Others have a screen shot or two from games the character appeared in.

One thing I would have liked would have been a list of all games the character appeared in. Since Capcom does tend to have characters cross franchises and genres, this would have been fun.

Again, not a thorough compendium like those released for the Atelier series or even the recent Zelda Historia, but a good little cross section book.

While it doesn't feature every Capcom Character, it does feature the most famous ones along with some obscure ones for good measure. While all of the facts aren't correct (like saying Mega Man's most recent appearance was Project x Zone when it was Mega Man X that appeared in that), its still full of nice facts.
