About the Author

When Steve Birnbaum launched this guide in 1981, he made it clear what was expected of anyone who worked on it: The book would be meticulously revised each year, leaving no attraction untested, no snack or meal untasted, no hotel untried. First-hand experiences like these, accumulated over the years, make this book the most authoritative guide to the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.

Our expertise, however, is not achieved by being escorted through back doors of attractions (although we would enjoy that). Instead, we wait in lines with everyone else, always hoping to have a Disney experience like that of any other guest.

While Walt Disney World has vastly expanded, and so has our knowledge of the most popular vacation destinations on the planet. On some occasions we've encountered sweltering weather and swelling crowds, times when even the happiest of travelers can turn into Grumpy for a moment or two. Had we known then what we know now, we could have spared ourselves some trying experiences.

In one case, a staffer waited more than an hour to get on an attraction. Standing in line with a notebook, she was asked by another guest if there was a quiz at the end. When she explained what she was doing, he expressed surprise to learn that she was waiting with the masses. But that's always been our strategy.
We believe the best way to gather useful advice for a Disney park guest is to be one. Over and over again!

Great factual book
The book came fast & was an easy read. You can learn a lot of this stuff by joining Disney groups but it’s nice to have it in writing. The downside is that Disney seems to change so frequently that by the time you get a book something in it is already out of date. Like a new ride is added, new fast passes added, ride out of commission, etc. For the price I thought it was a nice grab. Coupons in back of book aren’t any that really interest us so don’t count on those.

As a relatively frequent visitor to Walt Disney World, I have purchased Birnbaum's guides MANY times in the past. With several recent changes there, and with a trip planned for later this summer, I bought the latest (2020) one to help us in our planning. While a LOT of the information doesn't change from year to year, Birnbaum does a good job of updating each year. For my family, their claim that they have over $400 worth of coupons seems exaggerated; perhaps if we used EVERY coupon that could be true, but there aren't a lot that we find particularly attractive. So - the coupons are not the reason to buy this guide - at least not for us. Otherwise, very helpful.

We would be interested and a book similar for 2021. Not sure how one could be published with all the changes but still on the look out for one that is up to date.

Whether you have been to Disney before or are going for your first time, this book is very informative. It tells you what is new and offers time saving tips. They also benefit from having access to Disney by being the official book of Disney. However, that does not mean that they do not offer some critiques. However, I have noticed over the years that it seems the amount of information they receive from Disney about about new attractions and shows seems to be decreasing which is disappointing as that is one of the more useful parts for an experienced Disney traveller. However, for a new traveller it is still a must read just to know the lay of the land and what is available because you can't do it all in one trip so you must have a plan before you go.
