Needlework Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

Four musicians vie for a coveted spot on the main stage at the prestigious Olive Branch Music and Arts Festival.

For as long as she can remember, Melly has only been good at one thing: making music. From the instant she got her fingers on a flute and tambourine, music had transformed her life and become a way for her to express the hidden desires of her heart. And like every artist in the realm, joining the illustrious Olive Branch Music and Arts Festival was her ultimate dream.

When Hakim encounters Melly singing in a grubby tavern, his world stops for the briefest of moments. For Hakim, it was as clear as the sky on a sunny day—her voice was what his band, Needlework, had been missing. On a whim, a deal is struck. Soon Melly finds herself whisked away with the band as they join the Olive Branch Festival for what promises to be one wild ride.

Needlework is the story of a band named Needlework. The main characters are two members, Melly and Hakim, from two very different worlds. Melly is a destitute young woman living day to day while Hakim is a child of privilege. After Hakim sees Melly play in a tavern, he hires her for Needlework, and soon they are off on the traveling Olive Branch festival.

If this doesn't seem like much of a plot, then know that this description barely scratches the surface of Needlework. In avoidance of spoilers, I'll simply say that the story is much bigger than what its blurb describes. It inhabits a well-developed fantasy world with magic and a great deal of political intrigue, as well as frank tales of human suffering.

I'll also say that there were a couple of times I had to put it down because I was angry at the villain. It's always a good sign when you find yourself emotionally invested in a book to that degree.

The worst thing I can say about Needlework is that the story was a little sluggish in the early stages. Once it got moving, it more than rewarded my patience.

The book comes with trigger warnings. It is never exploitive or sensationalistic. It deals frankly and honestly with matters including rape and chronic pain.

This one has been on my TBR for a year & after Sedendum, I’ve been dying to read it but decided to have a go at other indie books in the summer reading challenge first. Well, it’s not your typical epic or fast-paced adventure, more like a friendship fiction book (which are rare).

Hakim is the nephew to the Emperor who likes to travel with his band - Needlework - which needs a new voice. Enter 17yo Melly - who plays in backwater taverns before Hakim whisks her off to the travelling Olive Branch festival. It’s a roadtrip type of story where the characters are each battling their own demons and kinda grow on you (and each other). Effectively, it’s a glimpse into what it would be like to follow a band travelling with a medieval festival plus all the political intrigue and brewing war running in parallel.

It’s a story about being powerless and fighting yourself and everyone else every step of the way to get your power back. I loved Melly’s no-nonsense straight-talking attitude and Hakim grew on me as the story continued. Nova and Katy were fun and fierce and Tarin…well. Original song lyrics were a nice touch. It will make you think and feel and fall in love with the characters.

Trigger warnings: might be difficult to read for survivors of PTSD, physical & sexual assault.

Recommended for lovers of YA sword & sorcery, friendship fiction and epic fiction books with strong female leads and broken boys eho grow into men.

This fantasy was about much more than what first appears. It could be said to be a venue for exploring situations whilst maintaining a readable, almost fairytale atmosphere at times.
Our male lead suffers from chronic pain. He doesn’t handle it well and as a consequence doesn’t really understand what goes on around him. He thinks he does. There is a difference as he finds out as the book progresses. Several difficult issues arise including rape but are sensitively handled and again a way for the author to explore reactions to situations. Often what defeats us is our reaction and not the issue itself.
A good story but with more underneath and so becomes a good read.

Emotional. Riveting. Magical. A fantastic journey!
Wow! There is so much I want to say about Needlework, but honestly, it would fill up more space than this spot would allow. Bekah Berge has written a masterpiece of feelings, growth and friendship. While reading this book, I felt every emotion that Hakim felt on his journey through the pain of chronic illness and the heartbreak of an unloving family. Anger, hurt, despair. BUT, I also felt his joy and wonder in his self discovery and the love that he found. This is what a great book does, and Needlework doesn't disappoint. The descriptions of the different places, the food and the music was phenomenal. The characters all drew me in and the girls in the story impressed me with their strength and loyalty to each other.
My favorite quote in this book is, "There's a difference between living and existing."
This story takes you on a fantastic journey and I just loved everything about it. I highly recommend Needlework!!

Just finished this wonderful YA fantasy read! I absolutely loved the setting and descriptions
in this book. Bekah has a talent for describing
a beautiful or foreboding scene so that you
feel like you're right there. There's all the
things you would expect from a great fantasy
novel: magic, love, courage, behind-the-scenes
politicking, betrayal, and forgiveness. I'm
passing this along to my 15-year-old niece
next! Any teenager will appreciate the very
personal themes as well, of loneliness,
acceptance, learning to love yourself, and the
power of friendship. Highly recommend for
lovers of YA fantasy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusually layered YA fantasy

Wealthy Hakim is the youngest son of a vicious dynasty, wounded by a recent betrayal. Thief Melly has her own trauma, clouding her past. Both find a measure of family and joy in the music band, Needlework, as a festival tours the land. But escaping the past may prove impossible and trust misplaced.

Books such as this are the reason why I love the work of indie authors. Berge has taken the YA fantasy found family trope and turned it on its head in a kaleidoscopic layering of themes and plot twists. The reader learns to care for all the characters, only to discover a spider's web of spying and misunderstanding.

I'd also applaud the author for sensitive portrayals of the aftermath of sexual assault - which I've read before - and the dark psyche of dealing with chronic pain - which I haven't.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable YA fantasy, with plenty of action, twist and turns.

A beautifully written and emotional YA fantasy story, with amazing characters that tug on your heartstrings. Berge is not afraid to tackle some sensitive subjects, all of which she handles sympathetically and with care. Hakim and Melly are truly wonderful characters and your heart goes out to them as they struggle with all the challenges and self-doubt they have to face.

Berge creates a wonderful world, with beautiful settings as the backdrop to this magical story about four friends who dream to perform at the most illustrious festival in the land. Admidst treachery and betrayal, the friendship between the band members is lovely to read. How they support each other though all their trials is truly inspiring.

An enjoyable YA fantasy, with plenty of action, twist and turns. Highly recommend you pick it up.
