Madly, Deeplyis a rare invitation into the mind of Alan Rickman―one of the most magnetic, beloved performers of our time.

From his breakout role in
Die Hard to his outstanding, multifaceted performances in the Harry Potter films, Galaxy Quest, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and more, Alan Rickman cemented his legacy as a world-class actor. His air of dignity, his sonorous voice, and the knowing wit he brought to each role continue to captivate audiences today.

But Rickman’s ability to breathe life into projects wasn't confined to just his performances. As you'll find, Rickman's diaries detail the extraordinary and the ordinary, flitting between worldly and witty and gossipy, while remaining utterly candid throughout. He takes us inside his home, on trips with friends across the globe, and on the sets of films and plays ranging from
Sense and Sensibility, to Noël Coward's Private Lives, to the final film he directed, A Little Chaos.

Running from 1993 to his death in 2016, the diaries provide singular insight into Rickman's public and private life. Reading them is like listening to Rickman chatting to a close companion. Meet Rickman the consummate professional actor, but also the friend, the traveler, the fan, the director, the enthusiast; in short, the man beyond the icon.

Madly, Deeply features a photo insert, a foreword by Emma Thompson, and an afterword by Rima Horton.

Review

“His design background didn’t go to waste either. The book’s endpapers reproduce his sweet illustrations and affable handwriting. . . . From his obituaries I got the feeling he was wonderful company. These diaries confirm it.”
The Guardian

“It’s a joy to spend time in Rickman’s company.”
Kirkus Reviews

Insight into a brilliant human
Although his entries are often cryptic or seemingly mundane, the care and attention to his diaries provides an exceptional look into the life and work of one of the best actors of our age. His works span decades and run the gamut of popular and obscure, critically acclaimed to under-appreciated. This book is an homage to his tireless work and love for his craft. Definitely worth reading!

This book is lovely. Alan Rickman has a different approach on journaling which is witty and yet pragmatic. This book is a documentation on his own terms which may be a bit hard to read to some. He talks a lot about friends and relationships and restaurants. It is more of a document of time and place than deeply forthcoming. Great read for the penultimate fan.

Enjoyed Mr. Rickman's talents "on screen". Gained insight into his life & career. Some parts a good read, some parts not so much. As the title states ... his personal diary entries. Hard to read sometimes due to Mr. Rickman's handwriting, but once you decipher it reading is easier. If you're a BIG Alan Rickman fan, this book is for you. I will be passing this book on to a fan of his.

I have always been an enormous admirer of Alan Rickman. His ability to bring characters to life and his personality will.never be matched in my lifetime. As a fan his dairy gave me an inside look at who he really was.I have to admit I wish I had sat down to dinner with him once. He is so witty and sarcastic. I know we would agree on how people live their lives and American vs. British lifestyle. This is a must read if you are curious and want a glimpse of Alan Rickman, a great actor and man.

As a keeper of journals myself, I found this book a wonderful insight into the life of this remarkable actor. It was published with care by his widow, Rima and with Alan Taylor, from the Estate of Alan Rickman, and taken from journals written between1993 to 2016, the year of his passing.

The inner covers and fly leaf pages are actual images from the pages of his journals, but the book itself is in regular type. (Which is a good thing, as Mr. Rickman's hand writing is as sloppy as my own! ) They were likely not meant for others to read, but are delightful to see. The colorful images that he did in his journal show him to be a skillful visual artist on many levels. He would sketch as well as write on the pages as many of us journal keepers do!

They share his thoughts as he was experiencing his rehearsals, plays and the process of making his many movies ... The Craft of being an Actor. The pages are filled with his joys and disappointments, insights and opinions as well as a his wonderfully dry sense of humor. The last chapter will have tears pouring down your face ... RIP Alan, you are still so sorely missed.

As much as I adore Alan Rickman as an actor/director, his diaries contain mere snippets of praise or derision for those he knew and, unfortunately, countless lists of names of those he worked with or dined with or danced with etc. I learn that Ian McKellen is a fine fellow and rather motherly - good to know, but not worth the time it took to plow through so many pages of mere names and travel dates. There is no there there! The editor provides no context about AK's fleeting references to work controversies, possible romantic entanglements, medical issues etc. Its up to the reader to try to assemble AK's character out of such tiny, disjointed fragments. The cover photograph is great and the only reason I rated this diary as high as a three. Not worth the journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating portrait of an actor of immense talent
Reviewed in Canada on August 11, 2023
Alan Rickman was as complex and as decent in his own life as the characters he played in the theatre and on screen. Ultimately, the story is one of sorrow and loss as this good and very talented man succumbs to illness and struggles so valiantly to carry on with his life. As a diary, it is wonderfully written and a page-turner.

Very entertainingly, the author expresses his unvarnished views of fellow actors, many famous and often his friends. At the same time, it’s very interesting to read about his life. The impression that comes across so strongly is- a strong and compassionate man. He rarely seems to rest- popping over to Paris for an amazing lunch - described in detail - with friends, flying to America for awards ceremonies or discussions about future film possibilities. It’s made clear that he says no to most scripts. The reader has the unusual experience of seeing into an energetic and fascinating life.
