With a short and sweet prologue, I was immediately intrigued by the obscure anomaly the author portrayed to disrupt the world being created. This novel follows a group of teenage girls as they venture away from their small town and experience the big city of New York on a school trip, only to find themselves sucked into a bizarre world deep in the cosmos.A mischievous detour to an occult bookstore and this tight knit group of friends find themselves separated by an obscene amount of light years. And thus begins a young girl's coming-of-age style, seemingly impossible journey back to home.I appreciate that the author takes the took the time to write from the perspective of different key characters in the story; it not only gives readers interesting POVs but add suspenseful chaos to dynamic scenes. Though I will never have the courage to explore a store selling “Lucifer's Bible" and touch a mirror without a reflection, it certainly makes for an engaging read with all the twists and turns the story takes; pleasantly surprised the premise of the story was not at all what I expected. Now I'm wondering if I should have taken her name as foretelling as to what type of adventure she'd be sucked into…

Annie Sky: Shattered in Time is a phenomenal piece of writing! Honestly, I was hooked from the prologue as the story captured my attention and drove me to find out what happens next. This novel is written in first person and is told from multiple perspectives. That makes me nervous because I’ve read other books in the past where the author went back and forth between characters, and that didn’t turn out well. Bettina Szedlak had no issues navigating that task at all! Each character had its own developed personality and voice. I could easily distinguish between the characters and didn’t have to return to the start of the chapter to see who was speaking. Great job on that!

The storyline automatically draws you in as the plot walks the line between fantasy and reality. There are elements of magical realism in this book, which has also proved problematic for me in the past. But not this book! Again, the storytelling was on point, and I was captivated! I cannot wait to see what this author brings in the future!

This book is a delightful fantasy adventure that whisks readers away to a captivating world of magic and wonder. The story is both enchanting and emotionally resonant, seamlessly blending the thrill of a fantastical journey with a poignant exploration of grief and healing. It follows the titular character, Annie grappling with the tragic loss of her mother. When a school trip to New York City takes an unexpected turn, Annie finds herself transported to a magical land filled with mystical creatures and hidden secrets. As she navigates this unfamiliar terrain, she encounters a charming young man named Phoenix, who becomes her guide and confidante. Together, they embark on a perilous quest, encountering a host of fantastical creatures and facing formidable foes. Szedlak paints a vivid picture of Diadem, bringing to life its lush landscapes, vibrant characters, and enchanting atmosphere. Readers will be captivated by the novel's magical elements, from the mystical artifacts to the breathtaking scenery. While the adventure goes on, Annie's emotional journey takes center stage. Szedlak delicately explores the complexities of grief, delving into Annie's struggles as she processes her mother's death. The novel offers a poignant reminder that healing is a process, one that requires patience, self-discovery, and the support of loved ones. I definitely recommend this for fans of the fantasy genre who want a little more depth to the characters outside of the mere fantastical.

This book is very fun and exciting. The descriptions were powerful, so I felt like I was experiencing the world with the characters. Each of the senses are effected by the details in the story, which helped me see the world the author wanted to create. I have not read many books about traveling to different dimensions, so I went into this book with no expectations. Once I realized we were traveling through the broken mirrors, I was very much invested. I think the book has two very enticing elements. First, the author knows how to excite you by setting up the scene. The prologue alone was enough for me to want to keep reading (mostly because you wonder what happened with the mirror) and then the subsequent chapters were filled with strong characters that I wanted to see more of. Once we travel into the other dimension, the excitement heightens because there is a very attractive man waiting there for the reader. I highly recommend this book for those seeking a fun read!

I am blown away by this debut story from Bettina Szedlak. She has proven YA books can be wholesome and clean (avoids foul language and sexual scenes or innuendos) and yet still be captivating. Annie Sky, a fairly modern but grief-stricken teenager burdened by a childhood trauma, finds herself transported from a NYC bookstore through a magic mirror into an entirely unique dimension with characters and creatures that, in my mind at least, are comparable to those in Guardians of the Galaxy. Time works differently in this other world, and Annie will soon run out of it unless her new companions can return her back to her old life and old friends. But the journey to do so is vastly untrekked and full of all sorts of pitfalls and snares, not unlike the Pilgrim’s Progress parable. Although the overarching theme is good versus evil and this is a true redemption story, there were many interesting and unexpected twists and turns throughout this read that kept me turning the Kindle pages. Szedlak includes so much symbolism and parallels to other traditional creation stories yet manages to design an original world with fascinating differences and a perilous adventure for a reader to delve into. There were so many clever, symbolic details that, pun intended, mirror Annie’s life before stumbling into the new realm, like the star engraved by her deceased mother and the stars that appear on the foreheads of her new friends, the Sons of Watchers. Most of the story is from Annie’s point of view, however, several chapters are from others’ perspectives, and this is mastered well. Each character has their own story, their own strengths and flaws, and they all develop well throughout the thrill. Categorize this one under fantasy, magical realism, adventure, and maybe even a touch of romance, but overall, label this fresh debut novel by this new author as outstanding!
