Earth's Survivors Rising From The Ashes (The Earth's Survivors Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

As Conner walked he looked over the houses he passed. Most were partly, and some were completely destroyed. He felt as though he were in a bad dream. He knew he wasn't though, as he had closed his eyes to blink away the sights several times to no avail. He had also pinched his left cheek until his eye had begun to water. No good. It was still there. He had done acid once, but only once, back in the seventies, and he had heard about flashbacks, and this could maybe be one, and he had been drinking pretty damn heavily yesterday, and...
He spotted a young woman sitting on the curb three houses down and walked up to her. She tilted her tear streaked and puffy face up to him as he approached.
"Is this a dream?" he asked when he stopped.
"No, it's no dream," she replied as she slowly shook her head.
"Where have you been since last night? Didn't you hear the noise? Didn't you feel it?"
Conner recalled the noise that had awakened him during the night. The noise he had thought was only an extension of the strange dream.
"Well, I thought it was a dream, you know, but I did hear a storm, or something, but I didn't think it was a big deal... you know, they can get loud sometimes, but... What happened?"
"Yellowstone blew up," she said simply. "Didn't you see the TV?"
Conner shook his head.
"Well," the young woman continued, "anyhow that's what happened. They cut into the TV last night; I was watching... you know, and they cut in and said that the Yellowstone caldera was going to fracture because of how close the meteor came. I came outside to see, and, well there was nothing to see at first., and then the ground started shaking, so I ran to get back inside. But the whole bottom floor of the building was gone." She shrugged.

One part of reading a book is to go along for the ride. In the best books, suspense has to build and characters have to be developed. The authors have done a beautiful job with this book in maintaining a suspenseful plot, developing the characters, and following the story of the survivors in Watertown, N.Y.

Sudden earthquakes and storms change the world until it is hardly recognizable. Strange lights flare in the night. Ash floats through the sky, followed by pounding thunder storms and snow. Some days last over forty hours, while the sun rises and sets in the wrong direction.

The characters include Mike, an unlikely hero and leader; Candace, a young African/Asian kick-bu** former bartender/dancer; Bob, Native American wise man; Janet, wife to Bob and nurturer of the clan; Tom, former truck driver who undergoes the most startling self-discovery; the dog, man's best friend/companion/mascot; Ronnie, Patty, and a host of others. There are journal segments included for many of the survivors which lend insight into each character and further invest the reader in their story of survival, community, and new dreams.

There were grammatical errors, but I did not find them terribly distracting. Yes, I had to re-read a couple of sentences to understand the content.

This was not just a shoot-em-up zombie survival story. There was a lot of thought that went into the character development and story line.

A great beginning to the series. Now I am off to read the second book.

Days get really lengthy after the earth's devastation. Some days are nearly 43 hours from sunrise to sunrise. Clouds are black and gray ash is present.

Yes, there are survivors and in this book, we meet some of them that gather together in Watertown, NY.

Mike, age 23, becomes the leader of this group who lives in a cave.

I liked the diversity of this group - mixed race, to Native American Indian to Asian and African American.

A few skirmishes (actually battles) break out with nearby groups and some of these are deadly.

A decision is made to leave the safety of their cave - heading for unknown parts.

An interesting read so far and am looking forward to the second book.

Highly recommended...

...and I admire anyone who makes the effort. But this was just plain poorly thought out and written.

"Isn't there anyone out there who he could have called upon to edit properly (he said?)." Yeah that's the kind of stuff throughout and it was just plain distracting after some time. In fact I only kept reading just to see how bad it could get. I would have to say that the last 30 pages or so got better -- but I won't be continuing this series.

W.W.W. Do yourself a favor and find someone to eyeball your work before you submit it.

This particular book also had almost NOTHING to do with Zombies. Perhaps the series does, but I won't be checking.

A lot of work was put into this story line. It often bounces between the actual story and the diaries the characters are writing of what they're going through and that can be hard to follow until you get used to it. The story itself is unique. The disaster that has happened to the characters is on a planetary scale and all at once. I've never read anything like that before and felt it was a really creative way to take things.

Spoiler Alert

I was surprised when I came across the first hint of Zombies because I didn't know this would be a zombie story and it isn't completely. Plus the Zombies are not your typical zombies. There not turned by a virus or radiation as in other stories, at least that's not what it appears to be. How often to you come across Zombies with intelligence that are able to communicate.

I always hate how people leave bad reviews over grammar and punctuation. Anyone who truly loves to read is not going to notice such trivial things.

One of the worst books I have ever tried to read. Half way through I gave up and just skimmed over last part hoping to find something worth reading. It never happened. Nothing came together, characters were totally unbelievable. I've read better stories from my fifth graders.

As a dystopian story, it rocks. I loved this story. This story of the end of the world as we know it kept me glued to my seat and hard to put down. I would like to see this one made into a movie, (as long as the story isn't compromised). It was very exciting from start to finish and I felt the fear and anxiety of the characters. What happens to these people could very well happen in our world, and sometimes it does happen, just on a smaller scale. I can't wait for the next one.

I would highly recommend this book to all who like apocalyptic stories. The reason I gave 4 stars, is the characters write in their . journals and you read a lot of repeat which is told in a different prospective. This bored me a little. The zombies in the book are different than most we read about. I like that aspect. Highly recommend...Look forward to next book.

First of all, bad cover! I love this type of book and at first it was very good, then it got so bogged down with all their prep to move on that I didn't care if they got to where they were going. I'll skip to the end and maybe try the second book, which I was glad to see that there was a second, I'm hoping the author got some constructive criicism and moved the story along at a nice pace. It is a very good premise, just what I wanted, other readers may love all the prep work but of just took so long and got repetitive

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED THE STORY LINE BUT NO ZOMBIES YET
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 17, 2013
This book is about Earth's survivors, set in America, it tells the tale of a small band of survivors, initially living in a cave. They are not sure if the Earth has stopped rotating, but there is macabre weather, earthquakes, snow, falling ash. The survivors work well together getting supplies from the local village. There is a further band of survivors who treat there women like slaves, and 2 join the party when they manage to escape. The bank decide to move on, because they realise that the cave they are living in, will not be safe with the other survivors around. This story does have a zombie roaming around the village and it does attack a woman, but for the majority of the story, this is about the survivors. I really enjoyed it, and will be reading earths survivors book 2 soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Story

I'm a sucker for apocalypse and zombie stories so this really appealed to me.

There is a good emphasis on the characters and the menace of the undead grows throughout the book.

The book really needs a good editor to correct some of the unnecessary errors and with the fixed I'd be tempted to give it five stars.

All in all I really enjoyed the book and have already read number two in the series and am on book 3.

Fell across this book whilst searching for something else on my kindle. Did I enjoy it? Suffice it to say I have bought the next one in the series.
An extremely good book nicely paced. Characters not thrust at you at every turn but introduced at a nice pace which gives the reader time to get to know each individual.
I hope the books to come in this series maintain the standard
Set by the first. Highly recommended.

Not another typical story of blundering zombie monsters, but an interesting intro, characters you care about, based on people similar to individuals you may know who are thrown into difficult situations and do their best to survive and care for their friends
