Bisecter: Book 1 in the Bisecter Series Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 83 ratings

The strongest of them all. Eyes blacker than the darkness they all fantasize about, but have never seen. An abomination.

Hemera Harkibel has spent her life concealing abilities she doesn’t fully understand. She is hated and feared because of her black eyes and inhuman strength—mutations she bears from a near-death encounter with the grotesque creatures known as Halves.

When her people’s underground cave system is attacked, Hemera is thrust above ground into a dangerous world where the sun’s rays can kill in seconds and enemies are tracking her every move.

The farther she travels, the more she discovers about her powers. Hemera comes to learn that her very existence is a threat in the war brewing between humans and Halves.

Should she disappear into the shadows to protect the people she cares about most, or embrace the strength she has spent a lifetime suppressing? Her choices will threaten the survival of the world as she knows it.

This action-filled novel is perfect for fans of Red Queen, Throne of Glass, and The Mortal Instruments. If you love fantasy, don’t miss this story about wonder and adventure, love and sacrifice, heroes and monsters, and the blurred spaces in between.

Review

"Bisecter by Stephanie Fazio is a young adult dystopian fantasy. This story is so amazing and did me a lot of good during my Throne Of Glass series withdrawal. Hemera, Mer to her friends, is the kind of kick-ass heroine that makes Bisecter such a thrilling adventure. She is so unbelievably strong and would do anything to save the lives of those she loves. I loved the way she handled betrayal. Where so many characters spend time bemoaning a traitor, Hemera sets out to make the world right in the best way she can. The world of the Duskers and Dwellers is vivid in its detail. Fans of high fantasy will find this to be a great series to start. Fast-paced action, romance and wonderful characters make this a book worth buying. The action doesn't stop there as there are more books to enjoy in Stephanie Fazio's amazing series." --Readers' Favorite

This book was a great weekend read for me. At its core, it is a story about growing up and finding your place in the world. We get to witness Hemera, our protagonist, go through continuous stages of self-discovery as she allows herself to realize the extent of her Bisecter abilities in a world that has always limited and feared everything she can do. Without giving too much away, I will say that the author does a great job detailing the anxiety of recognizing one’s own potential and rising to meet it, even when society stifles every impulse to do so. The author has crafted some powerful and vitally important metaphors here.

Apart from the book’s uplifting central message, the author has also created a vivid and creative world here. I was particularly fascinated by the culture and religion of the Dwellers and the Duskers, and I would love to read more about the origin of their society. Last but not least, though the storyline seems fairly simple in its “journey” form, the novel still kept me guessing until the end. Highly recommend.

Ready for book two!

Every so often, I pick up a book by a new author to give it a try. Normally, I focus on the next book by the authors that I enjoy reading. But it’s nice to venture out to see what’s there. When I read a book, I decide quickly whether I am going to enjoy it by the, “can I put it down” test. I have to say without hesitation that Bisecter, by new author, Stephanie Fazio, rates 5 stars, because I literally couldn’t put it down from the start. The story takes place in another world filled with novel characters who all weave together. The protagonist, Hemera, is the product of different cultures and is unique in this regard. She discovers her strength through her uniqueness. The story is so wonderful and magical, that I don’t want to describe any more of the details so that readers may enjoy it for themselves. I will only say that I can’t wait for the sequel, because the story that begins with Bisecter has a long way to go and I want to be part of the adventure.

WOW!!! THIS BOOK IS FANTASTIC! Not only is Bisecter well-written and imaginative, it is riveting and causes me to say "I can't wait to read her next book!"

The characters are really well-developed. The settings were so clear that at times I felt I was there beside the main characters and living their adventure with them. In many ways, I felt most sorry for Ekil and then again, happiest for him. I hope and anticipate that he will be back in future books. He reminds me so much of the people/groups that our country continues to discriminate against, deny jobs, deny voting rights, jail...... just because of what they are, rather than who they are. But my guess is that is just what the author intended. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!

I truly enjoyed reading Bisector, a fantasy novel by Stephanie Fazio. I was drawn into reading the novel as a way of sharing with my 16-year-old Granddaughter. She will not be disappointed. This book follows the life of Hemera Harkibel, a genetic human mutant, as she grows through adolescence to becoming a woman in a challenging, subterranean, and dystopic world.
Fantasy, social issues and romance are integrated into a well-paced, well written story. Hemera navigates friends and family while encountering new worlds, and discovering new and outstanding self-abilities. I found it easy to relate to many of her trials. The twists and turns kept me alert and wanting more. The character development was excellent and I was quickly drawn into reading the complete book.
I highly recommend the book and am looking forward to its sequel.

This book was a fun first book in this series, I was drawn in right away by the world-building, which was probably my favorite part of the book. It takes place in a world where the sun is deadly and people have to live underground, the "dwellers," and deal with monstrous "Halves" in the above or outside world. The main character, Herma, was interesting and spunky and kept the story going smoothly. It started as a journey for the young and outcast Herma to find herself and develops into a battle between the oppressed and the powerful, which again, I found really interesting because the world was so interesting. I'm excited to keep reading in the series (if the author is planning to write more) and continue with these characters in this world.

There are many books out there...most need only a sample to convince you to move on.
This isn’t one of those.
Characters, plots, and background are well balanced and developed.

I was so incredibly blown away by this book and feel like I've discovered the next big series of fantasy stories. It fully transported me to another world and I couldn’t put it down from start to finish. This is a story about love, strength, resilience and courage that blew me away with its amazing complexity and surprising depth rarely found in young adult novels. This story reminded me of the first time I read Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter but with a heroine that was even more relatable. I can’t wait to read the next book and continue exploring the amazing alternate world Fazio has built. (Would also love to see this turned into a movie!!)
