Getting Schooled is full of dozens of hilarious stories that each contain a critical lesson involving both the student and the teacher. Dr. Anderson makes it clear that not only was it his goal to properly educate his students, but to influence them in a positive way that will stick with them their entire lives, all while learning more about himself as an educator.
Most of these stories I can remember from when he told them to us in his classes, and even being involved in one or two of them. If you think they're funny in this book, hearing him tell them in person is entirely different. Some of the biggest laughs I can remember from high school came straight from Dr. Anderson (especially the stick figure devil story).
Now that I'm an adult and can look back on high school life, I found myself thinking "I always loved his classes, but I never realized how much I had in common with him" when he made references to music, movies, and other forms of media. I then realized that studying in his classes is where I learned all these comments and references; from Dr. Anderson himself. What he taught me in his Worldview classes will never be forgotten, especially the section we spent on Postmodernism within popular music. I greatly appreciate how his Worldview classes prepared me for college and adult life as a whole, while always keeping the material interesting and enjoyable, even if he had to kick my desk a few times when I dozed off.
I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to what other works Dr. Anderson will complete in the future.
"Good stories live and breathe and inspire people to live their lives in a fuller, more spiritual way—not the kind of spirituality that detaches one from the real world, but the kind that embraces the real world and seeks to re-create it in some way." - Dr. Anderson, Kindle location 1697, end of chapter 4
Thank you for the good stories, Dr. Anderson! I enjoyed your Bible class.
