About the author
YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ME and other books I have written at my website www.troyeschmidt.com.
I started writing for animation, with credits for such TV shows as "Dennis the Menace," "Heathcliff" and "Flintstone Kids." I found my way to Orlando and wrote three seasons on "The Mickey Mouse Club" the show that launched the careers of Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling, Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera.
GSN and the producers of "The American Bible Challenge" contacted me and asked me to help them put together a game show about the Bible. I joined them in Los Angeles and have worked with an amazing team through the pilot and three seasons.
One of the highlights of my career was writing the video series of "Hermie & Friends," not only because I got to work with Max Lucado, an author whose writing style I connected with, but because I was able to write for Tim Conway and Don Knotts.
I have enjoyed my relationship with the online Bible GLO where I produced a documentary on the life of Jesus called "In His Shoes." What a thrill to walk in the paths of Jesus Christ and share thoughts about his life with Max Lucado and Norman Geisler. (www.globible.com)
I am also on staff at Family Church where I serve as a Campus Pastor at our Windermere Campus. (www.ourfamily.church)
I also manage a Bible Answer blog called Reason for Hope (www.reasonhope.com) where I answer hard questions about God, faith and the Bible.

I liked how the authors use passages of Scripture to talk about the ideas presented (you'd hope to always find that in a devotional book, but that isn't always the case.) For example, one lesson quotes from Psalm 139 and then pulls apart some of the things we can learn about that passage about God's specific, intentional design of us as individuals. The authors make it fun without making the study "fluffy."
There's a whole series of chapters that explains the need for and plan of salvation. This could be a good review for a boy who has already professed faith, helping him understand and articulate his faith better. Other boys might clarify or solidify their faith journey as a result of studying these chapters. If a boy without any church background read the book, I'm not sure if they would be able to understand it without help. My understanding is that Troy Schmidt, the co-author, has done some work with an apologetics website; on the whole, the book has good explanations and doesn't contain a lot of unexplained "Christianese."
The third section of the book is the one that covers the identity in Christ. While the book only references the Overcomer movie on the cover, it is this section that ties in closest to the movie and the speech the main character makes as she reflects on what it means to be a child of God. These chapters describe ten ways that believers in Christ have been made new.
The final section of the book has to do with the Christian walk - what are some ways you should live differently as a Christian. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a chapter of believers' baptism (perhaps because some church traditions see this issue differently.)
I think the book could be used in several ways. A guy could read and study it by himself. I'm using it as a book to study together with my child. Someone mentoring a young guy could also use it as a study tool. A few of the illustrations might be more relatable to older teens, but it has worked well for my son. His younger brother listens in and seems to follow it. There are a few sections that speak to sexual temptation and relationships. Actually, it isn't distinctly masculine; though if you want a similar study for girls, I believe there's a separate book with that focus.
Glad I bought this and recommend it to you.
