A Dime is a Sign: Poems of Love and Loss (Feelings Into Words) Kindle Edition

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Synopsis:
A psychic medium once said that if you find a random dime, it is a sign that someone that you have loved and lost is thinking of you.

A Dime is a Sign Through Time

If you find a dime,
You will know that I’m
Sending thoughts of love
Through the veil of time.

Ten cents with a silver shine,
A sense sent you to help remind
That someone who left you behind
Is always living in your mind.

Sending love and vibes,
Felt as psychic sighs …
The ones that you miss,
Send you a kiss …

Sherrill S. Cannon’s second book of poetry contains messages written through the years in poetic form that put feelings into words. As a teacher, many of her poems helped counsel troubled teens and friends.

There are three sections in the book: Heads, Spinning, and Tails … (Love & Loss: Coin Toss?). The variety of lyrical poetry forms include free verse, blank verse, haiku, and sonnets, while some are just playing with words!

Hopefully, this is also a book of healing.

Review

Envelop yourself in the tenderly flowing words of romantic poetry in the unforgettably lyrical collection, A Dime Is A Sign: Poems of Love & Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon. Life is full of love and loss, but at times we experience our feelings and emotions so intensely, we can't put them into words. Allow the soft fluidity of the gentle poetry to caress your soul and bring comfort to your mind as you read through the sublime sonnets, poems, haiku, blank verse, and free-flowing verses. Each poem is meant to help convey a moment of deep emotion, and speak straight to the soul to help you better process each unique stage of love you experience. The delicately soothing words invite you to float lightly among the author's words and get lost in love.
A Dime Is A Sign: Poems of Love & Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon is a breathtaking book of romantic poetry. As a school teacher, wife of fifty-eight years, mother, and grandmother, Cannon has lived her words, writing them down throughout the years to help counsel teens and friends through love and heartache. Love and romance are beautiful, but loss can be tragically painful. We often ask ourselves, "Is it worth the pain to love?" The poems in this collection have answered with a resounding, "yes." The words moved me. Every word of every line held beauty and meaning. The poetry is based on the different stages of love -- from young, new love, to older forbidden love -- and the verses in this book were written to speak to both young teens and older adults. 5 Stars - Reviewed By Alyssa Elmore for Readers' Favorite

I am a mother of four and a grandmother of ten, and I am also a Multi-Award-Winning Best-Selling Author! My books have received 107 National and International awards in 2011-2023.. My newest children's book, "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece Coloring Book" has just been released and is a coloring book version of my award-winning "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece". It uses the theme of the infamous 'Emperor's New Clothes' to emphasize the theme of art is in the eye of the beholder! My previous release is the still available "My Little Angel Coloring Book", dedicated to our son KC who passed in 2022, and who is now our special angel. It is a great introduction to pre-schoolers, dealing with issues such as getting ready for school, crossing in cross-walks, being kind to friends, learning lessons, fastening seatbelts, stranger danger, and more - all of which accompanied by illustrations for the child to color. It follows "The Golden Rule Coloring Book", already an award-winner, which is a coloring book version of the best-selling The Golden Rule. The fourth coloring book version is the "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book" which is a coloring book version of my still available best-selling "Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" and has already received several awards including First Place in the FAPA Awards, Gold in Book Excellence Awards and an H.M.in the Royal Dragonfly and Purple Dragonfly Awards for Children's Activity Book. "David's ADHD", is a recipient of 13 Awards including a Gold medal in the Book Excellence Awards, 1st place in Purple Dragonfly plus an HM, Gold Medal in FAPA Awards,1st Place the Purple Dragonfly Awards plus H.M.in a 2nd category, 2 Silver medals from Feathered Quill, Winner of Barefoot Librarian Award plus Silver medal in Reviewer's Choice, Bronze Medal in eLit Awards, and a Pinnacle Achievement Award. My poetry book, " A Dime is a Sign" has already won 10 Awards in Feathered Quill, Reader Views and Pinnacle Achievement, Book Excellence,FAPA President's, Global eBook, Readers Favorite, New Apple Summer eBook, Royal Dragonfly and TopShelf Winner - and is a companion volume to my first book of poetry "A Penny for Your Thoughts" which has been released in hard cover as well as soft cover and eBook and has won 12 Awards: Gold Medals: Feathered Quill Awards, Reader Views Reviewers Choice, Reader Views Innovative Poetry, Los Angeles Book Festival, eLit Book Awards, New Apple eBook and New Apple Book, Top Shelf Winner and Pinnacle Achievement, and won the Silver Medal in the FAPA Awards and the Bronze in the Global eBook Awards. "My Little Angel"has won a Gold Medal in the Global eBook Awards, Bronze Medal in the Feathered Quill Awards, a Royal Dragonfly HM, a New Apple Book Finalist, a Readers' Favorite Finalist Award and a Pinnacle Achievement Award. "The Golden Rule" has won a Gold Book Excellence Award, a Gold eLit Award, Silver Reviewers' Choice Medal, a IAN Book of the Year Finalist, a Mom's Choice Award, a Children's Literary Classics Silver Medal plus Seal of Approval, and a Pinnacle Achievement Award. What an amazing time!!! My website is www.sherrillcannon.com

I have been writing poetry since before I could write! (My mother wrote down the poetry I wrote as a four-year-old.) I have written ten published rhymed children's stories, two poetry books, and three coloring books, as well as seven published rhymed musical plays for elementary school children, which have been performed internationally in over 20 countries. I love to write. My friends and family ask me if I think in rhyme and meter, and I have to admit that sometimes this is true!

Most of my books try to teach something, like good manners and caring for others. "Santa's Birthday Gift" is an attempt to include Santa in the meaning of Christmas. (After I read a story of the nativity to my young granddaughter, she looked at me and asked "But where's Santa?") The story is best for ages 3-9, to be read to children who still believe in Santa!

"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys" is designed to help parents cope with whining and complaining children. Peter is a small rabbit who does nothing but whine. His mother warns him that if he keeps on whining and crying, he'll have to go live with the Whimper-Whineys. His nocturnal adventures convince him his mother was right! If only he can get back home... A review editor for this story wrote: "I cannot imagine any parent or guardian not wanting to read this book to their child!...Parents everywhere applaud you!"

"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book" as well as "The Golden Rule Coloring Book" and "My Little Angel Coloring Book", are replicas of the above books, with the illustrations traced so they are colorable.

"The Magic Word" is a story of a little girl who has to learn to say Please! It stresses the importance of good manners and thinking of others.

"Gimme-Jimmy", is a story about how a bully learns to share, and seems to have become popular quickly! Jimmy's New Polite Rule stresses thinking of others and being polite.

"Manner-Man" is about a Superhero who helps children cope with bullies, and look within themselves for their own inner superhero. It incorporates many of the characters in m previous books, as well as their character traits. Consideration for others is a constant theme!

"My Fingerpaint Masterpiece" deals with perspective, perception and self-esteem as a child paints artwork in class, and later discovers it as part of the town's Art Contest

"Mice & Spiders & Webs...Oh My!" is story that illustrates the importance of being a good listener. It also is a cute introduction to basic computer terms.

"The Golden Rule" shows children how to be kind, and to imagine how wonderful it would be if everyone followed the Golden Rule: Treat others the way you'd like to be treated.

"My Little Angel" is about the day in the life of a small child who has a little guardian angel named Angela sitting on her shoulder and guiding her through her day. With an angel on your shoulder, you are never alone!

"A Penny for Your Thoughts" is not a children's book, but it is a poetry book of feelings - of love and friendship and all various associated emotions.

"A Dime is a Sign" is a companion volume of poetry to A Penny for Your Thoughts, with similar content and layout - all about feelings into words!

"David's ADHD" is designed to help children with ADHD learn to manage their behavior issues and become accepted in the classroom...and make friends!

"Peter and the Whimper-Whineys Coloring Book", "The Golden Rule Coloring Book", "My Little Angel Coloring Book" and the new "My Fingerpaint Masterpiece Coloring Book" are all coloring book versions of the original books above, but with the illustrations traced so that youngsters (and oldsters) can color them creatively.

Here's a little bit of my background: A real-live Eloise, I grew up in the Willard Hotel in Washington DC (my Dad was the manager), was married and lived in Northern Virginia for twenty years where my husband and I raised our four children. We later moved to Bucks County (Philadelphia PA suburbs) where we lived for 14 years before moving to the Binghamton NY area for 18 years, and in 2013 finally moved back to Bucks County PA. We will celebrated our 62nd wedding anniversary in June! We are now retired, and are snowbirds, traveling in our RV from Florida to Pennsylvania and back. I have had a varied career: I was a teacher and coach for ten years in the Washington DC area, and then became a "stay-at-home-Mom" who in my spare-time was a professional newspaper sports photographer and columnist for several years when our boys were playing competitive soccer. When our girls became interested in theater, I became a Dinner Theatre Company Stage Manager (as well as lighting and sound technician) and also was an Assistant Talent Manager for Cathy Parker Talent when our youngest daughter was doing commercials and professional modeling in NYC. When we relocated to the Binghamton NY area, I became the Business Administrator for a software development company handling payroll and contracts. Now I have time to write, when I'm not marketing (which is the other half of writing.) I spent many years collaborating with my daughter on rhymed musical plays for her elementary school, and now seven of our plays, "Have You Seen My Little Lamb", "The King's Spell","When You Wish Upon a Star...fish", "The Wonderful World of Weather", "ABC December" , "The Alphabet Trip" and "We Have Character" are available at Lazy Bee Scripts - www.lazybeescripts.co.uk. The plays have already had many performances in over 20 countries including the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as Australia, Austria, Botswana, Cambodia, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. I am trying to "make a difference".

A Dime is a Sign is Vulnerable, Introspective, and a Masterpiece of Emotional Catharsis
Touched my heart in a way I didn't expect. I found myself reliving moments that had been buried deep in the sands of time. And that's what good poetry does. It lingers, makes you stop, and remember - the hills, the valleys, the ebbs, the flows, the good, and the bad. A Dime is a Sign allowed me to open up my feelings to myself.I think sometimes I'm afraid to feel. Or I'm afraid to think about difficult subjects - love, loss, failure, disappointment, broken friendships, the "what could have been's " - and yet, how can we appreciate God's goodness if we don't remember the hard places we've endured, those unfortunate turns that sent us screaming, crying, shouting, or pouting?I remember one poem brought to mind some roses that I admired many years ago that were part of a rose competition. I never knew there could be so many different varieties, so many different colors, and so many spectacular blends. How could the judges choose just one winner?I think Dime is a Sign resurrected that memory because God has been telling me for a while - stop and see the beauty in the land of the living. Feel more, taste more, dream more, embrace life more - in all its fullness and nuances. Don't be afraid to feel love, sadness, dejection, or anger. It's in feeling that God restores our soul and gives us more of Himself. In this fast-paced world in which we live, perhaps it's just too easy to forget the beautiful sounds and rhythm of well-written poetry. We need to remember the beauty of words stunningly put together draw a portrait of our humanness. It's our frailties, passions, hopes, and despairs that give us commonality with the world and with each other. I needed to be reminded of many things that had been put away in a crowded box of the forgotten. In feeling deeply, I know I'm still alive.I thank Sherrill S. Cannon for taking me down a road less traveled (at least for me) and helping me to be more than I was before. Helping me to slow down and risk living at a slower paceI'm good at building invisible walls so I stay in the middle of the road on which I travel. At least today, I ventured out along the edges where I stopped and picked up stones that were beautiful and redemptive. Beautiful poetry has a strange way of doing that.A Dime is a Sign is vulnerable, introspective, and a masterpiece of emotional catharsis. Enjoy the read to the fullest.

A Dime is a Sign: Poems of Love and Loss (Feelings Into Words) by Sherrill S. Cannon walks us through emotions that we all feel.
It is a glorious collection of some of the most beautiful poems of our generation.
There wasn’t one that didn’t strike some cord in my heart and soul, to lie there and make me weep for loss or fill my heart with the glory of love.
Some of those that struck me the deepest were ‘Wall of Apprehension,’ a poem of fear to allow another in. Perhaps, the other will reject what you are, or you will feel by their response that you were a bother. ‘You, Friendship – I Love,’ helped me to realize that my shutting others out, for fear that my gestures would be mistaken for something else and I would find despair in the trying. And ‘Premature Goodbye,’ hit a chord deep in me for all those that I walked away from or that walked away from me, without the chance of explanation or renewal.
Ms. Cannon, outdid herself ‘A Dime is a Sign’ for she speaks directly to our hearts and souls. Whether it be a love poem or a poem of loss and sadness, this book holds something that will touch everyone.
It is a book to be cherished, reread, and savored time and again, for, in it, we will find our common humanity, our dreams of love, fear of loss and rejection, the joy of being, and we will grow more fully as humans.

“A Dime is a Sign – Poems of Love and Loss” is the second collection of published poems by Sherrill S. Cannon. The book is divided into three sections: Heads (Love and Friendship), Spinning (Related Emotions), and Tails (Heartache and Anguish), that deal with emotions, plus a few poems sprinkled among them that are nature themed. Ms. Cannon’s poems are written in a way that even non-poets can easily understand and relate to. Whether dealing with issues pertaining to friendship, new love, lost love, enduring love, broken relationships, or death, there are poems in this book that will speak to you and possibly help you. Ms. Cannon’s verse is lively and upbeat reading, making the poems easy for readers to absorb and apply to what they are feeling in their own lives.

I have enjoyed reading these thoughts and poems in a quiet reading corner.
The book is divided into three sections: Heads (Love and Friendship), Spinning (Related Emotions), and Tails (Heartache and Anguish).
I’ve experienced many losses, but none worse than the loss of my daughter and the ache and grief that accompanies me every day. These poems, in some ways, have helped me deal with my emotions, and reflect on many other aspects of life.
The poems are written in an easy way, so that even if you don’t read much poetry, you will be able to relate to these. The subjects range from friendship, new love, lost love, enduring love, broken relationships, and even death. The sense of love and emotion seem to flow straight through the authors pen onto the paper and then into the readers heart.
I enjoyed reading these poems and will keep the book on my shelf for inspiration whenever I feel the need to read something uplifting and inspiring.
