4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Twelve-year-old Carabelle can’t wait to spend the summer with her best friend, Gracie, swimming all day and watching movies all night. While Carabelle’s single mom works, the pair of BFFs dive into their adventures. But when a tragic accident tears Carabelle from her home and everyone she loves, she no longer knows where she belongs.

Carabelle finds herself trapped in a foster home with the school bully, Drake Duff, and becomes a prisoner to her own bitterness and anger. The only thing that can set her free is the power of forgiveness. And the only way to find it is by exploring some hard, painful truths that will tie her to Drake forever.

Renée Lichtenhan is the author of "I Am Girl" middle grade books, CARABELLE and VIOLET. The inspiration for these virtue-rich books grew out of years of mentoring children in Christian ministry. Renée loves their open minds, hearts, and souls. She wanted to write engaging books that might encourage faith and virtue to take shape within that openness. She lives in Mississippi with her husband, Joe. She and Joe enjoy watching their three young adult children unpack their dreams and launch themselves into the grown-up world.

This is a story about the complex, often confusing time of the tween and early teen years, with a character grappling with tragedy. Remembering her mother's words of advice, she tries to find empathy and forgiveness even while her heart is broken. This book teaches the value of forgiveness but it goes one step further and illustrates how, although it feels good AFTER you forgive someone, it can initially feel quite difficult to do. The story seems so good for family discussion I would recommend getting two copies: one for the parent and one for the teen, so they can easily discuss this book.

My daughter and I both loved this story! I loved how the story was full of suspense and you did not want to put the book down. This book is a great read for young girls and is a perfect book to add to your summer reading list. I believe it would make a great moview too. We will be watching and waiting to read the next book in this series.

Life is never what we expect it, and that’s what carabelle learns in this tale of redemption. I loved the twists and turns in the plot. The author showed a great faith without bogging the story down with preaching. Very well done. I will recommend to families with young girls (and boys, too!).

This is a lovely story of how forgiveness heals brokeness. Carabelle learns lessons that every young person and many adults need to learn. I loved this book for its strong plot, its engaging characters, for the virtues it defines, and the overall goodness it portrays. It's really all about love's healing balm.

Carabelle a beautiful middle-grade story about forgiveness. There are so many wonderful messages within this story, such as the danger of making assumptions. This book is a great reminder to readers that we have no way of knowing what is really going on in someone’s life or understand the reason behind someone’s actions. I especially loved how the story showed that the act of forgiveness has the power to free and heal no matter how horrible a situation.
The last day of school finds Carabelle looking forward to a lazy summer of hanging out at the pool with her best friend – three blissful months far away from the school bully. But a tragic event turns her world upside down, leaving her feeling abandoned and alone. Through interactions with some surprising individuals, Carabelle finds that she can overcome her tragedy and that even in the darkest of times, there is good in the world.
