I absolutely loved reading this book as I feel like I am right there with Christie as she is working with her dogs.....almost shadowing her. She gives so much detailed information that sucks you right in. When dogs are 'Career Changed' from the guide dog program we never really knew why? The school may say 'environmental' but what does that really mean? Christie explains the different reasons for a 'career changed' dog so it answered my question.
I highly recommend this well written book for anyone who works in the guide dog industry and of course puppy raisers! No matter what guide dog school you may happen to work with this book will answer most, if not all, of your questions and give you a real education at the same time!!
The application process is intense; as it should be. However, having read this book, I understood the process far more than I would've had I not found this amazing resource. My personal Guide Dog process has followed the exact outline of "Forward Together" as the author worked for Leader Dogs as a GDMI. The process was so close to the book, that my GDMI called me 2 weeks prior to my class date to discuss my daily interactions with escalators. Once again, thanks to this incredible book I was confidently able to let my GDMI know that I have made a specific point to ensure that the escalators I encounter regularly have alternate options of stairs or elevators. Escalators are a skill that some dogs are confident with and others are not. Being familiar with my personal routes of travel and the accommodations available allowed me to let the GDMI know that I am able to manage my environment without the necessity of an escalator sound Guide Dog. It's important that the escalator sound dogs are assigned to clients that encounter them daily with no other options.
I will soon be in class with the Guide Dog that I matched with to become a working Leader Dog Team. If you make time to read this book, take Orientation & Mobility lessons seriously and truly have the goal of becoming a handler...you will achieve your goal. The book takes you through the process exactly as it actually happens for Leader Dogs. The process is similar to other schools as well so don't be concerned with that.
To the author...please allow me to say thank you! Going blind after living life as a sighted individual is incredibly difficult let alone doing it during a global pandemic in which no services were available was maddening. Your book provided the structure I needed to be able to map out a plan for myself to achieve the goal of being a handler. After being accepted & waiting on the list for a match for 8 months, my time has finally arrived! Thank you, your book will remain on my shelf as the valuable resource that it is. I have forwarded the link to every person that talks to me about becoming a guide dog user. I truly believe it should be a prerequisite to training. Thank you for this incredible book; it's changed my life!
