Frontlines: Requiem #1 (of 4) Kindle & comiXology

3.3 3.3 out of 5 stars 129 ratings

When Earth is in the crosshairs, there's only one thing standing between survival and destruction: duty.

From acclaimed writer Ivan Brandon (Drifter, Viking), this four-issue comic book series features a new stand-alone story set within the action-packed military sci-fi world of Marko Kloos's bestselling Frontlines novels. Includes stunning artwork from Gary Erskine (Star Wars, Dan Dare, Doctor Who, Judge Dredd).

Colonel Soraya Yamin, commander of the battle-ravaged space control cruiser Phalanx, engages the Lankies, a merciless alien species, in an apocalyptic assault over Mars. The Lankies, who have outgunned, outmaneuvered, and outfought humanity at every turn, have been menacing Earth's colonies. But now they're suddenly in our solar system, decimating the NACS fleet and swarming toward Earth itself. Facing insurmountable odds, Soraya must make a fateful choice between her sworn duty and the loved ones she desperately wants to protect.

Some background, I've read the first four novels in the frontline series (fifth one not out in time of writing this). I think this comic is made for readers of the novel because had I not read the novels, I wouldn't understand how terrifying the Lankies are and what the Lankies reaching Mars actually means. I think this would subtract from the enjoyment. The story could be said as developing quickly but due to the short length, it's a bit underwhelming.

I'm torn between giving this a 3 star or a 4 star, but I finally decided on a 4 star because it's more than "okay" and this could potentially be a good addition to the Frontline universe, although I myself would prefer if it was a side story or novella on the side.

PS One personal comment, the Lankies in the comic isn't close to what I imagined them to be. I thought they were supposed to be like Marshmallow Man.

Take it from someone actually familiar with the series - man, people complain a lot. Am just on the third book of the series and ran into the comic - just bought and read both. This is a GREAT way of seeing what's in the books. Wish other authors did this too.

OK, I didn’t read the description. After the Frontlines series, I was ready to buy whatever Kloos wrote. Me heap big lexivore. Me give beads for...a comic book. To someone who reads a lot, and quickly, this was a huge barrier. On a large IPad, I could barely make out the text. The little Kindle’s “panel view was better...except when it wasn’t. And I buy books to read, not to swipe every one or two seconds.

Hopefully this review hauls down the average enough for a few less fans to go sour on Kloos.

Love the books more than any sci fi in over a decade. This novel is cool to be able to put some visual references to the main series, but it's extremely short. Worth the cheap price of entry for existing frontlines fans, others won't get much out of it.

I like the small non-comic book background better, but I do like getting some character background for one of the best series to be released in sometime.

Now I finally get to see Marko's vision for the world he created in the frontlines books through his eyes all I need now is more comics and for frontlines to take the leap into the world of live action rather it be a movie or a TV series.

Going a little pandemic stir crazy and tapping my foot for the next Frontlines book, I purchased all four of these today hoping for a temporary Kloos fix.
But twelve bucks for a total (all 4) reading time of 10 minutes has only ticked me off! What a racket.

I got it for free on amazon prime reading and happy I did not pay for it. I love comics and sci-fi opera but this is a very basic comic book and poor story telling. The drawing and colouring are not that bad but nothing extraordinary, I was not impressed. The script is awful. Characters are flat, their motivation looks like an army advertising, not very realistic, everything happens too fast, I did not see the connection between what happens on one page and what goes on next. There are plenty of good ideas (commitment, decision making under pressure, leadership, how to save a "sinking" ship, destruction of the fabric of society, survival of the human race, etc.) but they are not giving space to breath and grow up most of the time. It is all messed up.

Having red four of the Frontlines book, reading a fully imagined comic in the same universe, under a new perspective, was a dream come true. Looking foward to read further instalments.
