A peek inside the book

Watercolor in Nature Rosalie Haizlett

Beautifully designed & printed

Sturdy, high-quality paper enables you to wipe away paint smears that may get on the pages while you paint. The lay-flat binding allows you to keep the book open to the instructions while you work. Watercolor in Nature is also lightweight and compact, so you can pack it up in your backpack and take it on a painting trip outside! The book is fully illustrated by Rosalie so that you can be inspired by her artwork as you learn.

Featuring 20 gorgeous projects

In the pages of this book, you’ll learn how to paint everything from botanicals like a wild blueberry branch and a fiddlehead fern to wildlife like a wood duck, blue snail, and red fox. The first 10 projects are created using the winning combination of ink outlines and watercolor, a great way for new watercolorists to get their feet wet. The final 10 projects are created using only watercolor. The projects cover a vast variety of textures, shapes, colors and patterns that you may encounter in nature. You will be ready to paint all sorts of nature’s subjects after you finish the projects in the book!

Demystifying watercolor through clear steps

Each project is broken down into 8 steps so you can see exactly how to arrive at the finished piece. Rosalie shares all her secrets for sketching out the subject, building up layers, creating dynamic ink outlines, blending paint, and adding fine textures to make the paintings as life-like as possible. Watercolor doesn’t need to be a mystery! There are formulas and techniques that will help you achieve the results you want, and Rosalie provides that foundation in this book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Skillshare Top Teacher and artist Rosalie Haizlett introduces her signature teaching style and artistic approach to new audiences through this stunning and accessible book.” ―Skillshare

“This book has everything you need to capture the beauty of the natural world through watercolor―no prior experience needed!” ―Kolbie Blume, artist, art educator and author of
Wilderness Watercolor Landscapes

“Rosalie Haizlett will be your guide, coach and support system as you venture out in nature with brush and palette.” ―John Muir Laws, author of
The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling

"Watercolor in Nature is not only a treasure box of tips and techniques, but a surprisingly inspirational intersection of creativity, nature and well-being." ―Maggie Enterrios, illustrator and author of Flowerscape

"Along with teaching how to paint, Rosalie also lets us slow down and rediscover our own sense of wonder in the close-up details of nature. This book is a celebration of curiosity as much as it is a practical guide to learning the tools and techniques of watercolor." ―Gale Straub, creator of She Explores

“This book will teach you magic painting skills for capturing nature, but more surprisingly, it does something even more fundamental: it creates an environment where you will most certainly be captured by the magic of nature!” ―Andy J. Pizza, illustrator and founder of the Creative Pep Talk podcast

Haven't tried any examples out yet, but looks great. I waited to buy supplies til after the book came, so I'd know what colors I need. Maybe someone can benefit from that knowledge, now. I'm having a hard time finding a budget friendly palette that has those specific colors. I found one that has them all except Cadmium Yellow. So maybe I'll go with that? I just started looking though, so maybe I'll find the perfect palette soon lolEdit: I was overlooking an obvious palette. The "Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint Set, Sketchers' Pocket Set, 12 Half Pans w/ Brush" has all the colors needed.

Well written book with fairly detailed instructions for drawing and painting with watercolor. If you are not a beginner this is too elementary. The examples of the work would not make a beginner give up… they are reproducible. Has some good tips to help with creating watercolor and gradually presents more challenging lessons. I liked it, was not challenging and I’m far from a good artist.

This is the watercolor book I’ve been looking for. The projects in it help you learn to draw, as well as paint. There are also a lot of my favorite things as subjects for the projects. Mushrooms, snails, and lots of fun woodland creatures, and plants. Love it!!! Thanks to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!! From beginner to master fast!
Reviewed in the Netherlands on July 16, 2023
I bought this as a gamble because the reviews were so good - every 5 star is well deserved!!! This is THE BEST watercolor book I have. I had never made watercolor plants and animals before but now I’ve made most of the art in this book dozens of times - they’re my go to postcard pictures. The book guides you through the sketch to the paint and ramps up in difficulty slowly, all while teaching you how to paint from a reference photo. And did I mention how simple the color pallet required is?! 11/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous projects, very easy to follow
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 10, 2023
This book is simply marvelous. The projects are lovely, the instructions are simple, and the use of a reduced palette is perfect for beginners learning about colour mixing.

I have been painting for about three years and found the book very enjoyable, I think both beginners and more seasoned painters will benefit from this little jewel.

I have just finished the second project and I can't wait to continue with the next one!
