That's not what Jesus did.
Jesus was not afraid to shake people up. He spoke openly of their sinful nature and the righteousness of God. He forced people to confront their sin head-on, and he brought them face-to-face with their need for salvation.
"The Way of the Master will teach you how to share the message of the gospel simply, biblically, and without fear--the way Jesus did! You will become equipped to confidently lead anyone--friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or stranger on the street--to a clear understanding of repentance and what it means to be a true and active follower of Jesus Christ.
About the Author
But much more noteworthy than his acting career was his conversion to Christianity. Kirk was not raised in a church-going home and describes himself as a staunch atheist from a very young age. By the age of eight, he was so convinced there was no God that he laughed at those who thought there was. But that all changed one afternoon as he sat in his sports car pondering the first gospel message he had ever heard.
Since becoming a Christian, Kirk has been a dedicated follower of Christ, making the most of every opportunity to further the Gospel. He has preached in churches and at community events across the country.
Kirk has teamed up in ministry with Ray Comfort through Living Waters, an evangelism outreach that equips Christians who want to evangelize by training them how to witness as Jesus did. This dynamic duo have co-authored the new Whitaker House release, The World's Greatest Preachers, which focuses on the best evangelical gospel messages ever delivered in history and on the men who preached the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ.
Kirk and his wife, Chelsea, have six children and live in southern California.
Ray Comfort has written more than ninety books, hosts an award-winning TV program that airs in 190 countries, and his YouTube channel (LivingWaters.com) has had over 100,000,000 views. He lives with his wife, Sue, in Southern California.

Chapter One
DERELICTIONOF DUTYDo you enjoy worshiping God? Most people in the Church would say they do.Every Sunday all across the country, auditoriums are filled with hand-raising,God-loving Christians singing their praises to God. That's understandable, because when the Holy Spirit dwells within us, it's not hard toworship our glorious and worthy Creator. It's as natural for Christians toworship the Lord as it is for flowers to open their petals in the warm sunlight.
On the other hand, demonstrating our love for God through our obedience to His will (John 14:15) doesn't happen quite as naturally. It takes aconcerted effort to obey the Great Commission and follow in Christ's footsteps, seeking to save the lost. Nevertheless, our professed love and worshipof God should show itself in a determined devotion to do His will.
May I ask you a personal question? When was the last time you sharedyour faith with an unsaved person? When did you last meditate on the factthat all who die in their sins will be cast into a lake of fire? In his book TheComing Revival, Dr. Bill Bright notes that only 2 percent of American churchgoers share their faith with others. That is tragic. If the love of God dwells inus, how can we not be horrified by the fate of the lost? Yet, many professingChristians today are so locked into worship (with the volume turned high)that they seem to give little or no thought to the fate of the ungodly.
To make a very important point, I would like for you to consider the followingscenario:
An experienced big-city firefighter was charged yesterday with grave neglect of duty. Prosecutors maintain that he abandoned his responsibility and betrayed the people of the city when he failed to release rescue equipment during a recent fire, resulting in the needless and tragic deaths of a family of five.
The lead prosecuting attorney said that for more than three minutes after arriving at the scene, the firefighter sat in his vehicle, wearing earphones and listening to a CD, while a family of five screamed to be rescued from the sixth floor of the burning building. Horrified bystanders reported that, as flames licked at the mother's clothing, she cried out in terror and fell to her death, still clutching an infant in her arms.
The distraught onlookers also said that the father held two terrified children as he was engulfed by the massive flames. This terrifying drama took place in full view of the firefighter as he remained seated in the fire truck listening to the CD.
Eyewitnesses were sickened when they discovered that the reason the firefighter had remained in the locked emergency vehicle was simply to test a new high-tech CD player that he had purchased as a gift for the fire chief.
The chief immediately distanced himself from the defendant and dishonorably discharged him from the fire department. In a prepared statement, the chief said that there were no words to describe such a betrayal of those the firefighter was sworn to protect.
At the trial, the defense pleaded "no contest," but added that the defendant had gone to great personal sacrifice to purchase the expensive gift for the chief, and he hoped that the judge would take that into account when passing sentence.
What do you think would be a fitting punishment for this firefighter's serious crime-probation? Two years in jail? Twenty years? Life? Death? Whatsentence would you give the negligent firefighter?
Perhaps you're saying, "That's ridiculous. A firefighter would never dothat." Allow me to apply the parable: If you and I are not seeking to save thelost "with fear, pulling them out of the fire, hating even the garment defiledby the flesh" (Jude 1:23), are we not, in effect, negligent firefighters? That's asobering question, isn't it?
Am I saying that if we don't evangelize we're not saved? Of course not.But if we would expect a firefighter to make saving lives a priority, are wehonest enough to judge ourselves by the same standard? Are we doing allwe can to rescue the lost, or are we sitting passively in the pews while peopleperish?
I recognize that these questions are shocking-and perhaps you're feelinga bit put off at this point. But I urge you to stay with me. My purpose isnot to offend, but it is to get your attention and to present things as theyreally are. After all, what the Bible tells us about the fate of the lost (Revelation 20:15) is pretty shocking.
In Revelation 3:1-3, Jesus says to the church at Sardis, "I know yourworks, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I havenot found your works perfect before God. Remember therefore how youhave received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will notwatch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour Iwill come upon you."
Oswald J. Smith said, "Oh, my friends, we are loaded down with countlesschurch activities, while the real work of the Church, that of evangelizing andwinning the lost, is almost entirely neglected." We have been gazing to theheavens while sinners are sinking into hell.
Worship is the highest calling of the Christian, and we can see in thebook of Revelation that the Church will one day be consumed in worshipbefore the throne of the Almighty. But when we look back at the book ofActs, we don't find the Church consumed with worship. Instead, we findthat those Christians were devoted to reaching the lost, to the point that theywillingly gave their lives to preach the gospel.
Time is short. Let us not sit passively by during these crucial days ofopportunity, drowning out the cries of a dying humanity with the sweetsounds of worship. Let us reevaluate our priorities, take off the earphones, unlock the doors, become equipped, and demonstrate the depth of our lovefor God by rescuing those who are about to perish.
I wonder if you have been praying for revival. Many are, and that's good. But if we make revival sovereign and don't share our faith with the lost, ineffect this is what we are saying: "Lord, I know that you have commanded usto go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. But we willstay here and pray. We know that you have chosen the 'foolishness' ofpreaching to save them that believe. But we will stay here and pray. And weknow that the Bible asks us, 'How will they hear without a preacher?' But wewill stay here and pray, because it sure is easier to talk to God about peoplethan it is to talk to people about God."
C. T. Studd said: "We Christians too often substitute prayer for playingthe game. Prayer is good; but when used as a substitute for obedience, it isnothing but a blatant hypocrisy, a despicable Pharisaism.... To your knees, man! And to your Bible! Decide at once! Don't hedge! Time flies! Cease yourinsults to God. Quit consulting flesh and blood. Stop your lame, lying, andcowardly excuses."
A. W. Tozer hit the nail on the head: "Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late-and how little revival has resulted?I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying forobeying, and it simply will not work. To pray for revival while ignoring theplain precept laid down in Scripture is to waste a lot of words and get nothingfor our trouble. Prayer will become effective when we stop using it as asubstitute for obedience."
God has given the Church the ability (under His hand) to govern the tidesof revival. A. W. Pink writes, "It is true that [many] are praying for world-wide revival. But ... it would be more timely, and more scriptural, for prayerto be made to the Lord of the Harvest that He would raise up and thrustforth laborers who would fearlessly and faithfully preach those truthswhich are calculated to bring about a revival."
That is the purpose of this book-to put into your hands "truths whichare calculated to bring about a revival."
Chapter Two
PHENOMENAL GROWTH ... BUTWHERE HAS IT GONE?We live in exciting times. All around us we are seeing signs of the end of theage. Nation is rising against nation. There are wars, earthquakes, famines, and violence. The Jews are back in Jerusalem and the city has become a "burdensome stone" to the nations (Zechariah 12:3, KJV). Jesus said that iniquity(or lawlessness) would abound (Matthew 24:12), and it certainly has. At thesame time, we have seen the henomenal rise of megachurches with congregations in the tens of thousands; we have heard of millions in Russia, China, and Africa coming to the Savior; and pockets of revival have sprung up in theUnited States and other parts of the world. These are indeed exciting times.
Yet, with all the excitement, it seems that many Christians in the UnitedStates have overlooked a few statistical inconsistencies. In 1996, for example,a survey conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute in New Yorkfound that "18 percent of abortion patients describe themselves as born-again or evangelical Christians." That is, of all those who murdered theirown children, nearly one in five professed faith in Jesus Christ. That is difficult to reconcile with the fact that Christians are supposed to love God andlove others as much as they love themselves.
In 1994, the Barna Research Group found further evidence that all is notwell in the contemporary Church. A survey revealed that one in four Americanadults who said they were born again also believed that Jesus sinnedwhile He was on the earth. Think for a moment of the implications of such atheology. Here we have millions of "believers" who supposedly confess thatJesus is Lord, and yet they think He sinned. They either don't know what theBible teaches about Jesus or they believe it is inaccurate when it says thatJesus "knew no sin" (2 Corinthians 5:21), that He was "in all points temptedas we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15), and that He "committed no sin,nor was deceit found in His mouth" (1 Peter 2:22). Furthermore, if Jesussinned, it would mean that He wasn't the spotless Lamb of God the Scriptures say He was (1 Peter 1:19); that His sacrifice wasn't perfect; and thatwhen God accepted Jesus 'death as an atonement for our sins, He sanctioned a "contaminated payment" and is therefore corrupt by nature. Sadly, the multitudes who profess faith in Jesus yet deny His sinless perfectionappear to be strangers to true regeneration.
Some years ago, the Barna Research Group revealed that 62 percent ofAmericans claim to have "a relationship with Jesus Christ that is meaningful to them." Yet a Gallup poll taken around the same time found that, ofthose Americans who say they have a relationship with the Savior, only 10percent (approximately)were what the Gallup researchers called "a breedapart": "They are more tolerant of people of diverse backgrounds. They areinvolved in charitable activities. They are involved in practical Christianity. They are absolutely committed to prayer."
That sounds like normal, biblical Christianity, but if it applies to only 10percent of the Church, it means there are great masses of people who saythat Jesus Christ is meaningful to them but who are not "a breed apart."They are not involved in good works, nor are they tolerant of others. Neitherare they involved in practical Christianity or committed to prayer. In otherwords, there are millions of people in America who insinuate that theybelong to Jesus Christ, but their lives don't match their claims. Another Gallup poll found "very little difference in the behavior of the churched andunchurched on a wide range of items including lying, cheating, and stealing."These surveys were taken during the 1990s, but is there any reason tobelieve the situation has improved since then?
According to the book The Day America Told the Truth, 91 percent ofAmericans lie regularly at work or at home, 86 percent lie regularly to parents, and 75 percent lie regularly to friends. A staggering 92 percent own aBible, but only 11 percent read it daily. Other surveys have found that 90percent of Americans pray, but 87 percent do not believe in all of the TenCommandments. To top it off, 61 percent, according to a Roper Center poll, believe that premarital sex is not morally wrong.
A more recent Barna poll, reported in the October 24, 2003, edition of theLos Angeles Times, noted that "one out of ten born-again Christians-thosewho believe entry into heaven is solely based on confession of sins and faithin Jesus Christ-also believe in reincarnation, which violates Christian tenets ... and half believe a person can earn salvation based on good deeds evenwithout accepting Christ as the way to eternal life" (emphasis added). Read thelast part of that quote again.
When I travel, I often channel surf in my hotel room in an effort to findsomething wholesome to watch on television. This often means crossing thepolluted and shark-infested waters of MTV. If anything epitomizes today'sfoul-mouthed, sexually perverted, depraved, blasphemous, and rebelliousgeneration, it is MTV. Nevertheless, a surprising number of Christian teenagers watch MTV, according to an article in the December 1995 issue ofYouth Leader magazine: "More Christian teens watch MTV each week (42percent) than non-Christians (33 percent), according to a Barna ResearchGroup survey of evangelical teens."
The article went on to quote Barna surveys showing that of these sameteens, 65 percent said they prayed daily. An amazing 72 percent believed theBible. However, 66 percent confessed that they had lied to a parent or teacherin the last three months, 55 percent had had sex, 55 percent had cheated onan exam, and 20 percent had either gotten drunk or used illegal drugs.

As receiving Christ so often does not result in "a happier life," it is no wonder that people don't stick around. The reality is not what they were offered and it isn't what they want.
Comfort argues that people need to be made aware of the justice of God and the fact that they are going to be judged by a holy and just God according to whether they have obeyed God's law or not, as "sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3.4). Citing the methods of many past evangelists and preachers such as Luther and Spurgeon, he argues that it is fundamental to lay the groundwork of the Law as summed up in the Ten Commandments before presenting the gospel because, as the Bible says, the functions of the Law are to 1) to shut the mouths of sinners in justifying themselves, 2) show people what sin is and 3) show people their need for Christ (Rom. 3.19-20, 7.7; Galatians 3.24). Once people have seen their need for Christ, they will be ready to truly accept God's grace, repent of their sins and receive Christ as their Savior and Lord, even if that means going through difficulties as a result.
However, Comfort argues, the failure of the church to help people see what terrible sinners they are and what a horrible thing it is to be judged by a just and holy God leads to false conversions. He discusses the parables and passages that show there are many false Christians in the church. So, why is there such an alarming number of people who backslide and leave the church? Because they haven't really undergone a true conversion to begin with. And unfortunately, as a result, their hearts are often hardened to the gospel in the future.
I found the book to be very soundly reasoned and very biblically based. The version I got had comments by Kirk Cameron inserted within the text. At times the comments were a bit annoying as they could interfere with the flow of the text, but sometimes they were useful. Overall, this is a message that is much needed by the church today and I would encourage everyone, especially pastors, to read it and carefully consider its implications for their particular church.
This book really, really convicted me. There is absolutely no excuse why I am not sharing the gospel with my parents, my brother, my friends, my neighbors, and complete strangers!! How much do I love my family, my friends? How much do I love people? Ultimately, how much do I love God? How am I doing with the Great Commission? What do I treasure over doing my part in God's plan to save millions and millions of hell bound souls? The lack of me sharing my faith and bringing others to faith in Christ shows that I treasure comfort, I treasure my comfort zone, I treasure being thought well of, I treasure having a good reputation, I treasure being thought of as normal in this world, I treasure my pride, I treasure my life, my desires, myself, over playing a part in the saving of souls from the eternal fire of hell. This is a reality, a reality we must face. How much of our unbelief is going to keep us from doing what we know matters?
This is not our life. It has been purchased with a price. A great price.

Ich empfehle jedem Christen dieses Buch zu lesen.
A good and powerful read that promotes some soul searching.
Anyone who knows about Ray Comfort will know what this book is all about. It's about how we absolutely must use the Law of God (the Ten Commandments) in Evangelism. It teaches we cannot bring the gospel to people without first bringing them the Law of God. It's the bad news of how we've personally and specifically broken God's commandments which makes the good news of the gospel make sense to people. We have to show people God's Moral Standard. We must spell sin out and we do that using the Law of God. We are called to clearly impress upon people that they are guilty before God and in desperate need of the forgiveness God offers them through Christ alone. The Law of God makes Christ's work understandable. This makes Christ relevant to a society which doesn't think He is. It's the Law of God that shows people their true need of Jesus - there is no other way.
I've read 'Hell's Best Kept Secret', I've listened to Ray preaching and I've seen his show 'Way of the Master'. So I'm very familiar with his approach. So I never expected this book to be so good nor to gain so much from it. But it is simply mind-blowing. It obviously emphasises what he teaches in all other contexts, but with incredible clarity and an enormous weight of argument. I can honestly say, without any doubt, that I've never read such a powerful book on evangelism and the gospel as this. It's been absolutely soul-inspiring. It's relit a fire in my heart which I think had previously almost gone out. It's so good that I've been thinking about what it teaches almost every waking moment and I've even dreamt about evangelising because of it. I'm determined before God to put into practice the teachings of this book for the rest of my life. That's how highly I recommend this incredibly life-transforming book. Every Church leader and every Christian ought to read it, probably more than once. You need to really soak in the contents of this book until it has become a part of you.
I'm just so glad 'The Way of the Master' was written and I might add this is such an apt title. I really think this is THE book on evangelism by which to judge all others. It helps Christians to be confident in sharing the gospel properly and with real conviction. It will be a classic for years to come, if properly appreciated. And it's so incredibly engaging, simple and exciting to read that I read over 200 pages in about a week. It's that good. Read this and you'll soon see that it's obviously no wonder why God has so mightily used Ray's teachings.
If you struggle to tell others about Jesus, then just buy this. At £7.99, it's a give-away. Satan will tear his hair out if the teachings in this book grab a hold of your heart and mind as has happened to me. God bless you Ray!
