About the authors
Chris Woodhouse was born in England and during his teenage years was a keen amateur artist. Around this time, he was given his first camera, a Zenith B, which sparked his interest in monochrome. After graduating with a Masters Degree in Electronic Engineering and after a period of designing communication and optical gauging equipment, he switched to automotive development. As a member of the Royal Photographic Society, he gained an Associate distinction in 2002.
All this time, he has pursued his passion for all forms of photography, including landscape, infrared, as well as portraiture, still life and architectural photography, mostly in monochrome. This passion, coupled with his design experience, led him to invent and patent several unique darkroom timers and meters, which are sold throughout the world. His first book was born from early successes writing informative magazine articles. Digital imaging soured the experience of darkroom printing and the false promise of several successive inkjet printers discouraged a move to digital monochrome imaging.
Digital imaging is, however, spectacularly good at imaging exceedingly faint objects and, since 2010, Chris has immersed himself into all aspects of amateur digital astrophotography. His early and ongoing experiences triggered the publication of several editions of The Astrophotography Manual, designed for advanced amateurs, and Capturing the Universe for those starting out. The technology continues to evolve and the third edition covers most, of those that are reliable enough for unattended imaging.
Ralph Lambrecht was born and educated in Germany. His interest in photography started when he was about seven years old and saw a B&W image emerging in the developer of his father's darkroom. His first camera was a Box Brownie handed down from his grandmother, followed by a post-war 6x6 rangefinder from his father.
As a young adult, Ralph emigrated with his wife and two children to the United States, where he worked and received a Masters Degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. While living in the US his interest in photography grew slowly into a passion, when he met accomplished photographers such as Howard Bond and Phil Davis, who taught him the basics of fine printing and the Zone System. Further photographic education followed, including a workshop with John Sexton in California, which ended with an unforgettable visit to Ansel Adams' darkroom.
His choice of equipment has become more sophisticated since the days of the Brownie, but he still uses mechanical cameras in medium and large format for all his fine-art photography. Traditional silver-gelatin film and fiber-base paper are his media of choice, and he enjoys performing all darkroom tasks himself. To him, an attractive presentation of the image is just as important as the photography itself. Consequently, he performs all mounting, matting and framing to archival gallery and museum standards. Since 1999, he is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and a Graduate Image Scientist since 2007. His work has been exhibited internationally from private galleries to the London Salon of Photography.
Ralph has been involved in adult education for over 20 years. As a photographic author, he has written for major photographic magazines, including Camera & Darkroom, Black & White Photography, Photo Techniques, Fine Art Printer and View Camera magazine. He is a regular on FotoTV and has contributed to several book projects, including Schwarzweiß Fotografie Digital and the fourth edition of The Focal Encyclopedia of Photography.

Note that I make no comments on the approaches to digital photography sections in WBM, or in Bruce Barnbaum's book. Moreover, since I am not using color film, the sections on color photography in Bruce Barnbaum's book are not relevant to my work.
This book just arrived today, and I have been joyously flipping through its pages all afternoon! I'm an amateur photographer, having been bitten by the bug in college, and have a hobby darkroom set up in my house. I have never taken it too seriously, it's enough for me to simply enjoy the peace and solitude of the darkroom and to geek-out on all of the technical aspects of traditional black and white printing.
Of course I'd like to be more confident in the darkroom, and so much of my good work feels like it came about more by accident than by actually knowing what I was doing. I'd like to think that this book is going to help me in that.
This book is not recommended as a beginner's text. It assumes you know your way around the darkroom and know a bit about shooting and processing film. There are plenty of books to start you on the basics (Ansel Adams' book series, also Henry Horenstein's book "Black & White Photography, A Basic Manual"), but this book really takes it a step further by guiding you through the more advanced, nuanced areas of expert shooting and printing. Some of the topics covered in the book include creating unsharp masks, digital negatives, paper and print contrast, split-grade printing, paper flashing, print bleaching, print retouching, and all kinds of other tips and tricks and projects. I can't believe how well laid out this book is, and many of the techniques I was completely unaware of.
The actual production quality of the nook is amazing, too. There are hundreds of illustrations, examples, diagrams and graphs to help clarify the topics. The photographic examples are extremely well done, and the print quality is very high. This is a book people will ask to borrow from your library, and I guarantee you'll be evaluating your friendship before you lend it out to anyone! Seriously though, this is a book that is going to last. It's built like one of those bulletproof college textbooks, but it is beautifully and thoughtfully laid out.
To close, I'd like to suggest that anyone who is perhaps like me, very familiar to film photography and darkroom printing, but want to elevate their understanding of the art, please do not hesitate to buy this book. It is one of the most elegant, concise, and thorough texts on the art of photography, and it should not be missed!

Onto the book review. Keep in mind I had this book a few days while I sorted out the return, so I didn't read it cover to cover, but rather audited it for general content. The book seems competent and very detailed which will suit an advanced photographer, as well as someone starting out who can grow beyond the basics of more entry-level books. I would say if you like black and white photography, even if digital, this book is a wealth of information. You won't read it in one sitting (500+ pages) but you'll flick through to the appropriate section and absorb that bit. The detail is quite dense, so may take a few goes, but it will definitely reward the patient learner of photography. I've been photographing for 40 years and I picked stuff up from my limited time with the book.
Some other reviewer has made a big deal about the nudes featured in the book. It may perhaps be a bit off-putting to more sensitive viewers or perhaps women, but my criticism has more to do with the overly posed and forced nature of the images. They didn't feel natural and aren't particularly harmonic in nature, bar one or two. I would say they are mildly distracting to the text and are only present as a vanity project of the author. But nothing really offensive about them. They are certainly nowhere near as lewd or suggestive as the previous reviewer makes out.
Why only 4 stars? About the printing quality of the book. The print quality is quite good, however the paper stock is.... paper thin. This softcover book will not stand the rigours of time, and I think the book is overpriced for what it offers in terms of handling quality. So I had to dock it a star for lack of value for money.
At this point what I can say is that the book should weigh in at 2.31 kg and what I have weighs 1.75 kg (also hard copy). Time will tell what comes of it. I cannot return due my whereabouts, but will continue following on this as it is getting interesting. However, this book has always been the best on the subject and arguably most thorough. What I have kills its content due to low quality photos, without which the book is almost useless and certainly not worth the price I paid.
I left 5 stars on it, because I am convinced the book is at the top of the list on the subject and can't wait to see what had happened to its printing.

UPDATE: Today (10/03/2015) I was informed by Focal that a new PROPER copy will be delivered directly to my home address. This would have never happened, had it not been for one of the authors standing behind this quality publication and following up on an otherwise absurd issue. Credit to Focal for acknowledging the problem and acting in good faith to fix it, as one would expect. The printing issue seems to have been an isolated incident and while I cannot confirm it, I would think the POD version I had unfortunately received, will no longer be available.

FINAL UPDATE
Just to clear this issue I did indeed receive the proper copy shortly after my last update above, so all is well and huge plus to Chris for his support in resolving this case swiftly.
