Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal).

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve
more, even in life's darkest moments.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Should be read by every leader in America... [MAKE YOUR BED] is a book to inspire your children and grandchildren to become everything that they can. It is a book to discuss with your executive leadership team as a spur to meeting shared goals. Most of all, it is a book that will leave you with tears in your eyes."―Wall Street Journal

"Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault...McRaven's lessons, like his commencement speech, extend far beyond his bed-making. He devotes the 10-chapter book to lessons about moving beyond failure, standing up to bullies and giving others hope."―
Washington Post

"McRaven...has taken the genesis of what he learned during SEAL training and his nearly four decades in Navy Special Operations into a thin, powerful book."―
USA Today

"Exquisitely simple...superb, smart, and succinct ideas."―
Forbes

I stumbled across this as a recommendation from other readers and I always check the reviews before buying anything. Here’s my real person review. I’ve never been in any branch of the military, but I have been around it. This book of for all people in general but I feel is a great tool for anyone who has served before. I love the discipline aspect of it. And how the Admiral shared real life events and sequences that make up each chapter. I have been through ups and down in my life and while it seems as of the past 10-15 years just downs. This book, although not very long, is just right and helping me understand things and be encouraged to think differently and get out of my own head and way. The chapters 4: “life’s not fair - drive on”, and chapter 10: ”never, ever quit!” Really resonated with me! For the price, how the book was written, how it’s not too long, easy to read and understand. I would recommend this to anyone. Enjoy!

Make Your Bed by Admiral William McRaven is a short, meaningful book that emphasizes the importance of simplifying things in life and taking a moment to analyze our current situation. As the title suggests, it all starts with making your bed in the morning. Starting your day with an accomplishment, no matter how small, paves the way for future success. If we cannot handle the small things life throws at us, how can we handle the bigger things? While in the Navy, in regard to something as simple as making his bed in the morning, McRaven states that “It demonstrated my discipline. It showed my attention to detail and at the end of the day it would be a reminder that I had done something well, something to be proud of, no matter how small the task” (McRaven, 6). McRaven includes many examples of his life during his Navy Seal training, each example highlighting the importance of motivation, determination, and encouragement from within. What resonated with me the most was the underlying motif of hope, which is evident when McRaven discusses his hardships throughout his life in the Navy. This book is a wonderful read for individuals wanting to reach their goals, but are unsure where to start. I loved it!

Amazing book - one of the most practical self-help books I have ever read. McRaven comes through as totally honest and humble - none of the "I know it all, so listen to me" sermon which some authors tend to do in the name of self-help books. Each chapter has a relevant story, and a quotable quote. The only thing that jars is the reference to Saddam being such a fiend, which post-Iraq war events have proven to be untrue. But then, the situations and the actions of SEALs were not decided by McRaven. Very strongly recommended for discussion in book clubs. We did, and I know we felt the book was worth its weight in gold.
