Theo and Sprout: A Journey of Growth Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Sprout says she’s there to help him, to guide him. Theo, an introverted, teenage boy form a large family, is not so sure about that. He’s not sure about much of anything at the moment. You see, Theo is thrown into absolute uncertainty one morning after he has showered for school when Sprout suddenly manifests herself physically in his body.

Is she a dream? A hallucination? That is what Theo grapples with as he not only sees Sprout in the mirror, then validates what he’s seen by looking down at his body, now her body, but also begins a conversation with her about what the hell is going on.

While Theo longs for some guidance through the perils of adolescence, the guidance he knew his family wouldn’t give him, he isn’t prepared for Sprout to present herself and offer it to him. In fact, he doesn’t appear to have a choice since Sprout, sassy and confident about her presence, won’t go away.

Thus begin the adventures of Theo and Sprout. Sprout comes and goes as she pleases, forcing Theo to come to grips with her existence, the fear of being caught, the guidance she offers and the choices she asks hm to make. Together Theo and Sprout must navigate the uneasy situations Sprout creates by appearing at inopportune times, whether in school, at church, or at a family gathering.

Sprout just wants Theo to grow. Theo just wants to survive.

Review

Theo and Sproutby Joseph Gergen is an extraordinary book that will make you think--will turn life as you've always thought about it upside down. Undressing gender stereotypes in favor of finding what one truly wants and needs is the theme in this timely Young Adult book.

As Theo, a fifteen-year-old boy on the cusp of adolescence, explores his own inner life and contemplates his body, Sprout suddenly appears to offer her own version of events. Sprout is the older, wiser (think: therapist) version of an invisible friend. She offers comfort, courage, and conviction to a socially awkward, aloof teen.

Joseph Gergen has clearly done his research. He is brilliant and clever writer as he effectively and skillfully takes on a distinctively female and male voice simultaneously. Each character's story line, arc, and personality are well thought out and nuanced. This book is very intriguing, different and unique in its approach to growing up and finding our own path. The topics broached in Theo and Sprout are interesting, important and timely; I believe they will have an impact on any teenager or adult who reads this. There are several significant ideas in this story that many, including myself, need to hear and I think we all benefit from the reminders written into this remarkable plot. Sprout's character especially shines through and will make every reader want to go out into the world in a bold, new way.

Instead of shutting down when you feel fear, Sprout wants you to push back, to take a stand. Be you and let go.
Theo and Sprout is the reminder that we all need—to feel fear and to act, not to feel fear and turn away. Many interactions throughout this book demonstrate the importance of showing up for those around you, standing up for what feels right, and becoming quiet enough that one can hear one's own inner voice. Chick Lit Café highly recommends Theo and Sprout by Joseph Gergen, an incredible story that is meaningful, entertaining and unforgettable. -- From Chick Lit Cafe.

I'm mostly just another human from Minneapolis, but I enjoy painting, furniture making and writing I’ve taken the circular path to authorship. I left college thinking I would be a writer, decided I didn’t know enough to write anything, and now have come back to writing years later knowing even more about how much I don’t know, but not caring so much about that. I finally found a writing voice, so now I let that voice tell the story and wash my hands of the results. Thanks for visiting.

I got drawn into this book so quickly, that before I knew it, hours had passed, and I was deep into the story. As an introvert myself, my heart went out to Theo. His family/living situation seems so stressful, but I loved the contrast between him and Sprout. She's so effervescent and has that joie de vivre that Theo lacks. Her chaotic element keeps things interesting, leaving you wondering when she'll next pop up. Gergen did a great job of highlighting the differences between Theo and Sprout, and really giving the reader a peek inside the mind of someone who is extremely introverted and with serious social anxiety. I could relate to Theo in ways I rarely relate to characters in books, which was refreshing. Honestly, I was a little sad when I reached the end, I wanted to spend more time with Theo and Sprout even though there were no loose ends to tie up.

I think this is a very deep read for tweenage readers, even young adults. It most certainly was for me. I’ll call the character Theo/Sprout and through both of them we experience many opposite emotions, many of them very hard to handle.

I will admit that the story brought up many things that young emerging teens must feel and handle. How they handle those feelings or how they react to situations molds their lives in many ways. Theo is a shy, introverted boy, and Sprout is his opposite. Except Sprout and Theo are the same person.

You will probably not be surprised at this point when I say I had trouble following Gergen’s book. I wonder if young people will understand it. If they do, they will have gained a lot of food for thought.

Theo and Sprout by author Joseph Gergen is a book that will definitely surprise you for its depth and introspective point of view.
Theo is socially crippled, shy, lacks confidence, avoids eye contact and can never stand up for himself. One day he meets his alternate self who is the complete opposite in persona in the mirror. The only problem, Sprout who is confident, bold, happy go lucky, joyous and thrives on interacting with people is a girl and manifests herself physically in Theo's body, this creates its own set of problems and misunderstandings with Theo always tethering on the brink of danger, excitement and wilfulness when Sprout makes an appearance.
Theo and Sprout is about the journey a teen, Theo makes in understanding himself with a lot of hand holding from Sprout. Author Joseph Gergen has a deep understanding of the introvert mind and the sensitivity with which he explores the topic of Theo's self actualization journey is marvelous and beautifully penned. 5 stars for this emotional, eloquent, expressive and intense journey of a teen's mind and the path from a lost soul who people forget exists to blooming into the person he was meant to be.
