AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBORAH COONTS

Why did you decide to write humor?

I’m not sure I decided to add snark to the Lucky books, specifically to Lucky’s own voice, it just happened that way. When I was a kid, my mouth always got me into trouble. Finally, I’ve found a way to harness the sarcasm for the Forces of Good—or at least in a way not to anger my grandmother. And when Lucky started talking to me, she had a strong dose of sass in her.

The Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series is hard to categorize. Is that by design?

When I set out to write Wanna Get Lucky?, I knew I wanted to write a romp through Las Vegas. I had the characters and the setting but no real understanding of narrative drive. So, I threw a young woman out of a tour helicopter into the middle of the Pirate Show and let the story unfold. A bit of murder to keep the plot moving, some wisecracking and Vegas mischief to make you laugh, and some romance to keep it interesting. A bit of a mash up, but it works.

PRAISE FOR THE LUCKY O’TOOLE VEGAS ADVENTURE SERIES

“Lucky’s story is funny, fast-paced, exuberant and brilliantly realized.” - Susan Wiggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Get ready to win big--with a novel that will keep you glued to the pages all the way to the end.” - Brenda Novak, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author

"More fun than a winning streak in Vegas. Lucky O’Toole is a character with brains, beauty, and a wry sense of humor. Readers will want to meet her again—and soon." - Diane Mott Davidson, New York Times bestselling author

"Deborah Coonts...entrusts the sleuthing to a brainy beauty who sees the lighter side of human folly." - New York Times Book Review

"Las Vegas is the perfect setting for this witty tale of misdirection and larger-than-life characters. Fans of J. A. Konrath's Jack Daniels series will love this." - Library Journal, starred review

A whirlwind of a kooky crime novel, and readers will enjoy every minute of it. Coonts provides the perfect solution for readers waiting for the next Stephanie Plum book.” - Booklist

About the Author

Deborah Coonts swears she was switched at birth. Coming from a family of homebodies, Deborah is the odd woman out, happiest with a passport, a high-limit credit card, her computer, and changing scenery outside her window. Goaded by an insatiable curiosity, she flies airplanes, rides motorcycles, travels the world, and pretends to be more of a badass than she probably is. Deborah is the author of the Lucky O'Toole Vegas Adventure series, a romantic mystery romp through Sin City. Wanna Get Lucky?, the first in the series, was a New York Times Notable Crime Novel and a double RITA(TM) Award Finalist. She has also penned a few standalone novels; After Me, a medical thriller, Deep Water, a romantic suspense, and Crushed, a contemporary romance set in Napa. Although rarely there, Deborah calls Houston home. You can always track her down at www.deborahcoonts.com.

This book had me from the first sentence. "Are you my mother?" Having read all of the books in this series, I knew that this simple question had the potential to throw Lucky's world into turmoil. For me, it was a fantastic lead-in ... and it led to another fantastic adventure for rising Vegas power exec, Lucky O'Toole. I don't like to hurry through books, but I couldn't help myself this time. The somewhat bizarre juxtaposition of the death of a clown and a question of parentage touched off a tension-filled couple of days as Lucky tried to sort through so many different layers of crime, punishment, and retribution. It's a great read and perhaps the best book in the series. And one final word. Do not skim through Lucky's frequent internal monologues in order to get to the action. The real artistry in this book is in the constant evolution of Lucky's personality as we compare her internal reflections with her external words and deeds. Lucky is a tremendously complicated woman, and a brilliant creation by Deborah Coonts. I'm already impatient to read the next Lucky adventure.

Love the Lucky books! They are exciting and fun, and I wish the Babylon was a real hotel, complete with the hanging gardens. This book is one of my least favorites in the series, but that's like saying that 10 million dollars is a worse gift than $20 million. The characters are real and relatable, their interactions with eachother are honest, and the mystery at the root of the story keeps you guessing. I bought the entire series after receiving a free copy of the first book, simply because the settings, the characters, and the stories stay with me even after the book ends.

It was fast moving. I loved the herstory. It was not as funny as some other ones. I always enjoy the Coonts books.

Lucky leads an interesting life. She can handle just about anything - until a teenager walks in to her office and asks "are you my mom?", shows yu a picture of your mom, and looks like you. Then things start to happen -- a rodeo, dead bodies, a crazed killer --- just to mention a few. You don't need to have read the other LUCKY books to enjoy this one. But, I would be very surprised if you don't want to after this book. Lucky is smart, resorcful, and has a unique sense of humor. Her family is unusual and her friends many. ( I have read every book this author has written and can honestly say I can't wait for the next. I am so glad I found this author.

Coonts is now the best American female author of the comic/murder novel. This and the last book led her to this level. The character is unique, loveable, charasmatic, able to doubt herself, difficult and uncannily insightful into others. The plot is solid, sufficiently convoluted and full of amazing characters. The action almost nonstop. The denouement perfect while setting you up to want to get to the next book ASAP.
PS The other top American female authors in this genre are Gretchen Archer, Susn Boyer, Deb Baker and Deborah Sharp.

This one had me going for quite a while trying to figure out the "who done it" and then the why. I love the Lucky O'Toole series and I can't wait for another one.

It was frustrating for Lucky when trying to figure this out and her parents, who refused to help with the knowledge they had, but it would not have been as interesting if that had told her everything when she asked. I am also very happy that Lucky got much needed answers to questions that she has had for years. Thank you Ms. Coonts for another wonderful book!

I love the "Lucky" series, but this one isn't quite as well researched as the others. If you don't know much about rodeo, don't send your character there. The plot point about an unusual knot doesn't work with a knot that doesn't exist, or is poorly described, including stating that it also includes a "reserve" half bend, which probably was meant to be a reverse half hitch. There were also random capitalizations of things that didn't need it, i.e., "The Coroner" and "The Rodeo Queen." If you are referring to Coroner Jack Smith, then capitalizing is correct. A generic coroner doesn't need it, and neither does a rodeo queen. Rodeo royalty make public appearances to generate interest in the rodeo and promote attendance.

A rodeo clown dies at the rodeo, and a teenage girl that's working odd jobs with the rodeo is implicated as the one who did it. Rodeo clowns act as bullfighters and safety assistants during the bullriding event, and dress mostly in running wear with western touches like oversized Wrangler or Levi denim shorts. This is a simple outfit meant to allow the clowns to move quickly to distract the bulls, and sometimes to put on an act playing with their big beefy pals. A substitute fills in for one of the clowns, and he's the one that turns up dead with a rope around his neck.

Lucky finds herself face to face with a a teenage girl who asks "Are you my mother?" She isn't, but she knows who is. Now the girl is in custody as a person of interest in the death of the man at the rodeo.

Lucky herself is still recovering from the firebombing of her apartment, the destruction of her prized Porsche, and the departure of Teddy, former lover, great best friend, and the person she's always relied on. Things are different now.

With barely a minute since her last adventure Lucky is back in the midst of another crime wave but this one is directed at Mona... will Mona finally tell Lucky about her youth and why she turned to prostitution? Will Lucky be able to save her mother's life? Does she have another sibling? And will those twins ever be named?? Read on to find out!!
If you enjoyed the preceding novels then you will definitely enjoy this one as it follows on perfectly with the same flowing style... I can't wait for the next but do hope Lucky gets a break between cases with the delightful Jean-Charles
