A captivating tale of humanity pushed beyond its breaking point, of family and bonds of love forged when everything is lost, and of a heroic young woman who crosses a frozen landscape to find her destiny. This debut novel is written in a post-apocalyptic tradition that spans The Hunger Games and Station Eleven but blazes its own distinctive path.

Forget the old days. Forget summer. Forget warmth. Forget anything that doesn’t help you survive in the endless white wilderness beyond the edges of a fallen world.

Lynn McBride has learned much since society collapsed in the face of nuclear war and the relentless spread of disease. As the memories of her old life continue to haunt, she’s forced to forge ahead in the snow-drifted Canadian Yukon, learning how to hunt and trap and slaughter.

Shadows of the world before have found her tiny community—most prominently in the enigmatic figure of Jax, who brings with him dark secrets of the past and sets in motion a chain of events that will call Lynn to a role she never imagined.

Simultaneously a heartbreakingly sympathetic portrait of a young woman searching for the answer to who she is meant to be and a frightening vision of a merciless new world in which desperation rules,
The Wolves of Winter is enveloping, propulsive, and poignant.

COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 4 starsI happened upon The Wolves of Winter while looking for books to place in our winter reading display at the library. The blurb was intriguing and sounded like something I would really enjoy.Well, I ended up reading it in just two days because I could not put it down! For a debut novel this was definitely a swing and a hit. Set in the Yukon Territory in a post-apocalyptic world after nuclear fallout and then a pandemic flu, the fast pace and easy readability made this dystopian survival story a very entertaining read.

If you're looking for another zombie apocalypse, this book is not for you. It's about a young late teenage girl and what's left of her family surviving in Alaska in the aftermath of a nuclear winter and a virulent flu unleashed by bio war folks. Besides the horrid climate and the challenges of just finding food to survive, there are evil folks afoot (our fellow man always making a fine villain). And a mysterious young man named Jax comes out of the wilderness. The author, who is male, does a fine job telling the story from a teenage girl's point of view. Our heroine Lynn pines for her life before the disaster and her loving Dad who fell victim to the flu virus. And the bad guys (and gals) are closing in. And Lynn discovers secrets about herself, Jax, and her Dad that gives her purpose in life. This is a rewarding book to read, with great descriptions, pithy humor, and exceptional tension. You won't regret getting this book.

This was a great read. There is a lot of absolute crap in this genre, and if it weren't for Far North, The Dog Stars, Station Eleven, and The Children of Men, I would Rate this a five star novel. The main character makes Catniss Everdeen look like a creampuff. The narrative is easily followed with no inconsistencies. The flashbacks are well-timed and unobtrusive, bringing the loose ends of the plot together nicely without feeling contrived. The author has some poetic observations to make on the human condition. Descriptions, especially of action scenes, are very detailed without growing tiresome. Characters are realistic and have believable dialogue, and the setting is entirely beautifully rendered. I am looking forward to the next one!

This is a pretty scary book. It almost feels like it really could happen any day now. It seems very apropos as a sign of our times.

Today we have similar issues these characters do. Flu, famine, violence, weather changes, possible war, other diseases, a banking system that is in jeopardy, reality star as POTUS, and a government that is falling apart every day and every tweet.

Then this story starts. And you are introduced to another side of the government that is odd, scary, and intolerant with their actions. They come into small towns, they don’t tell you why they are in your town, in your work, in your home. They look funny in their “uniforms” (if you can call them that) and stick out like a sore thumb. You know they are not truthful, you know they have ulterior motives, but you just don’t know what those are yet. If this is the end of the world, “big” brother is still always watching no matter what. The characters and back story are all fleshed out. But the author is very talented by holding stuff back. You know it will come. You just don’t know where, what, and too who. There are twists and turns that you really don’t see coming. This is a super fast read because you literally get lost in it’s pages. I really liked this book and can’t wait to see these characters again.

Interesting book if a little slow at the begining. Could have been so much more. Spoiler allert. The story just stops. Literally flipped pages back and forth thinking there was more. What a shame. Made reading it feel like a bit waste of time.

Interesting take from the post-apocalypse genre, which I happen to enjoy. I read this after first reading The Lost Kings, by the same author. The Wolves of Winter takes place in a desolated area in the Yukon wilderness, a fitting locale for this story of survival, family, community, and hope.

Loved this book!

Well, I had really high expectations based on some of the reviews and praise by other authors. It was an ok read but, first half of the book was really entertaining but then things slowly took a turn for the worse. Plot was quite predictable and some of the statements like "who knows what a dead body can do to a river's ecosystem" were simply ridiculous. There is definitely room for improvement.

On the other hand, bigger names in the industry disappointed me more, so because this is the author's first novel I'll rate it 4 stars.

This was a very good book for a first effort by the author. The characters really come to life and are consistently interesting. I wish he had left a couple of characters out of the book as I felt they really didn't have a role but that is true of almost any book.

While it isn't mentioned, I do hope the author has plans for a sequel. He left off at a point where it would be easy to create another book with the existing characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't have read Wolves of Winter if....

I purchased the book because of it's NYT best seller rating and because the author is local. Honestly, If I'd known the premise of the story, I wouldn't have bothered. I'm glad I didn't because this is a great story that accurately depicts fear, courage and optimism in a landscape of hopelessness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the average post apocalypse novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 8, 2022
Different from the typical post apocalypse tale of survival and there are avenues for a follow up. A level of empathy is created with the narrator that is quite surprising. An easy but pleasing read. Sorry not to give more depth in a review but I like to avoid spoilers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read plenty of action with a good story line

Dropped a star because I thought unusually that this could have been a longer book and some of the characters were a little lacking in background development. I think it should have had more detail and the story told across two books.

Reviewed in Canada on August 9, 2019
I enjoyed reading this book very much. The only reason that I did not give it a five rating was that I found the author's descriptions of the characters and the scenery a little simple. Otherwise, I feel that most people would enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read
Reviewed in Australia on January 20, 2020
A concise well imagined novel. Johnson keeps things simple with a minimum of characters and settings, which is beneficial here.

We take on the perspective of Lynn, a young woman whom lives with her family in the frigid north having survived several 'end of the world' events.

The relationships shine here between the few characters introduced. I loved the man (woman) vs. nature element here also.

Only gripe would be a few couldve beens, such as actual wolves featuring in the book, and a bit of a loose and bitsy ending.

A good read and worthy of 4 stars.
